spp. ...strains isolated from different food categories analysed in the context of Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 in order to assess their antibiotic susceptibility profiles and ESBL production. To determine the susceptibility profiles and identify MDR strains, we used the Kirby-Bauer method to test 17 antibiotics. Double-disc and PCR testing then allowed us to assess the production of ESBLs and the presence of beta-lactamase resistance genes. Phenotypic tests showed that 36 out of 67 strains were MDR and 52.7% of these were ESBL producers. Finally, molecular investigations conducted on ESBL-producing strains revealed the presence of

genes. Our results confirmed the prevalence of
, an MDR strain and ESBL producer, in chicken meat. This suggests that further research on the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in foodborne strains is needed, especially from a One Health perspective.
Four dogs were presented with thoracic limb deformity. After clinical and radiographic examinations, a diagnosis of congenital malformations was performed for each of them. In one case, a deformity ...involving both the radial and ulnar side of the distal limb was observed. Based on clinical and radiological evaluations, a diagnosis of postaxial terminal longitudinal ulnar hemimelia was performed. The term ectrodactyly was used to refer different malformations characterized by skin and soft tissue separation of the distal forelimb observed in two dogs. Simple complete uncomplicated syndactyly of the right forelimb, and complex incomplete uncomplicated syndactyly of the left forelimb were diagnosed in the fourth case. To the authors' knowledge, ectrodactyly and simple complete uncomplicated syndactyly are very uncommon anomalies in companion animals and have been rarely documented. Moreover, postaxial terminal longitudinal ulnar hemimelia has still not been reported in dogs.
The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem that requires a One Health approach. Despite several studies have reported the role of companion animals as reservoirs ...of AMR, limited information is available regarding the role of cats in the circulation of AMR. In this study, we evaluated the phenotypic and genotypic profile of 75 Escherichia coli isolated from rectal swabs and fecal samples of 75 stray cats (living in solitary or in a colony) sampled in Palermo (Sicily, Italy), to determine whether these animals may participate in the spread of AMR. Susceptibility to 8 antibiotics was tested using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration assays, while the presence of the common antibiotic resistance genes blaTEM, blaCTX-M, tet(A), and tet(B) was investigated by PCR. From the 75 E. coli isolates analyzed, 43% were resistant to at least one of the eight antibiotics tested, with 31% of the isolates resistant to ampicillin, 23% to cefotaxime, 21% to tetracycline, 20% to cefazolin, and 17% to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Most isolates harbored the blaTEM gene (29%), followed by blaCTX-M (23%), tet(A) (21%), and tet(B) (20%). Our results confirm the fecal carriage of antibiotic-resistant E. coli and clinically relevant resistance genes in stray cats. This study highlights the potential role of stray cats in the spread of AMR in urban environments, emphasising the need to better understand their role in AMR circulation when planning strategies to combat it.

We evaluated the efficacy of IFNβ1a in attenuating cognitive impairment and inflammation in an animal model of AD.
A rat model of AD was obtained by intra-hippocampal injection of Aβ
peptide (23 μg/2 μl). After 6 days, 3.6 μg of IFNβ1a was given subcutaneously (s.c.) for 12 days. Using the novel object recognition (NOR) test, we evaluated changes in cognitive function. Measurement of pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory cytokines, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and SOD activity levels was performed in the hippocampus. Data were evaluated by one-way ANOVA with Fisher's Protected Least Significant Difference (PLSD) test.
We showed that treatment with IFNβ1a was able to reverse memory impairment and to counteract microglia activation and upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β) in the hippocampus of Aβ
-injected rats. The anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, significantly reduced in the Aβ
animals, recovered to control levels following IFNβ1a treatment. IFNβ1a also reduced ROS and lipids peroxidation and increased SOD1 protein levels in the hippocampus of Aβ
-injected rats.
This study shows that IFNβ1a is able to reverse the inflammatory and cognitive effects of intra-hippocampal Aβ
in the rat. Given the role played by inflammation in AD pathogenesis and the established efficacy of IFNβ1a in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system such as multiple sclerosis, its use may be a viable strategy to inhibit the pro-inflammatory cytokine and oxidative stress cascade associated with Aβ deposition in the hippocampus of AD patients.

In this study we used seventy rats weighting 400-500 g. The equipment needed for the intubation was an operating table, a longish of cotton, a cotton tip, orotracheal tube, neonatal laryngoscope blades, KTR4 small animal ventilator and isoflurane for inhalation anaesthesia. Premedication was carried out by medetomidine hydrochloride 1 mg/mL; then, thanks to a closed glass chamber, a mixture of oxygen and isoflurane was administered. By means of a neonatal laryngoscope the orotracheal tube was advanced into the oral cavity until the wire guide was visualized trough the vocal cords; then it was passed through them. The tube was introduced directly into the larynx over the wire guide; successively, the guide was removed and the tube placed into the trachea. Breathing was confirmed using a glove, cut at the end of a finger, simulating a small balloon.
We achieved a fast and simple orotracheal intubation in all animals employed.
We believe that our procedure is easier and faster than those previously reported in scientific literature.
Background Diverticular disease is increasingly prevalent in Western societies and is associated with significant morbidity. Objective Two-stage endoscopic device development for inversion and ...secured ligation of colonic diverticula; first, human cadaver studies were performed to measure forces required for diverticular inversion; second, a novel set of devices (elastic spiked O-ring with delivery system) was tested in animals. Design Prospective, observational study of human cadavers and prospective, interventional study of a porcine model. Setting University hospital pathology laboratory and animal facility. Intervention Full-thickness inversion of the colonic wall with a pipelike delivery instrument to produce an inverted pseudodiverticulum that was secured with a spiked O-ring. Main Outcome Measurements The forces required for diverticular inversion, the secured closure of inverted pseudodiverticula, and the time until necrotic tissue falls off. Results A total of 248 of 248 of cadaveric sigmoid diverticula could be inverted by means of vacuum or forceps. The forces required for inversion ranged from 0.28 to 0.47 N (median, 0.37 N). Twenty-four spiked O-rings were delivered in 6 living pigs to produce 24 inverted pseudodiverticula. One animal died the day after the procedure of a pulmonary thromboembolism. In the remaining 5 pigs, all delivered spiked O-rings remained in place for 7 to 22 days. At necropsy, none of the inverted sites showed signs of perforation but rather full-thickness reparative scarring with ingrowth of connective tissue. Limitations Animal model, stiff pipelike delivery instrument, variations in diverticular location, diameter, and size. Conclusions Endoluminal inversion and securing of colonic diverticula induces tissue necrosis, diverticular sloughing, and full-thickness scarring.

The high incidence of cancer recurrences and the frequent occurrence of multidrug resistance often stem from a poorly selective and inefficient antineoplastic therapy, responsible for the onset of undesired side effects as well. A combination of minimal-invasive approaches could thus be a useful strategy to surmount these shortcomings, achieving a safe and solid cancer therapy. Herein, a multi-therapeutic nanotool was designed by merging the photothermal properties of gold nanorods (AuNRs) with the photodynamic activity of the photosensitizer verteporfin. AuNRs were coated with the natural materials lipoic acid and gellan gum (AuNRs_LA,GG) and subsequently loaded with verteporfin (AuNRs_LA,GG/Vert) producing stable colloidal dispersions. AuNRs_LA,GG/Vert were characterized in terms of stability, size and morphology. The hyperthermia exhibited after NIR excitation (810 nm) was also evaluated to highlight the effect on increasing the drug released profile in intra-tumoral mimicking media, as well as cytotoxicity on human colon cancer cell line (HCT116). In vivo studies on HCT116 murine xenograft models were carried out to prove the ability of AuNRs_LA,GG to arrest the tumor growth via NIR laser-triggered hyperthermia. Furthermore, the complete xenograft depletion was demonstrated upon AuNRs_LA,GG/Vert administration by combined photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) effects.

featuring different rates of hatching success from a nesting beach in Lampedusa (Italy) was analyzed and compared. The bacterial community was determined using culture-dependent methods and next-generation sequencing based on 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding analysis. Our results showed five dominant bacterial phyla (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Firmicutes) and indicated different bacterial families (
Pseudomonadaceae

Brucellaceae
) as likely causes of hatching failures. Besides, our findings demonstrated the nests’ active role in modulating the sand’s bacterial communities. This study suggests microbiological analysis could be a valuable tool in monitoring nests to take preventive actions and reduce hatching failures.

Human colon cancer is one of the higher aggressive solid tumors, whose high mortality, much like many other solid tumors, results from metastasis formation. To reduce this high ...mortality, more effective chemotherapy, allowing a specific tumor accumulation and an efficient early-stage medical imaging as well, are still needed. At this regard, stimuli-responsive nanocarriers for anticancer drug delivery are promising strategy in cancer therapy. For this purpose, a dual targeted redox-responsive drug delivery system, prepared by coating superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) with the amphiphilic copolymer INU-LA-PEG-FA and loading doxorubicin (DOXO-SPIONs) was investigated as tool for solid tumor chemotherapy. Folic acid (FA) has been chosen as active targeting agent as its receptor is upregulated in many tumors, including colon cancer. Lipoic acid (LA) has been used to act as the redox-responsive moiety, due to the presence of the -S-S- linkage into its structure, which can undergo intracellular reductive-induced cleavage, and therefore, a modification of stability and release profile of the nanocarrier. Accumulation by magnetic attraction was used as synergistic targeting strategy. Improved anticancer activity was demonstrated in mice by evaluating tumor volume reduction, immunohistochemical analyses and imaging properties using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Experimental studies have highlighted that the administration of 3,5-diiodo-L-thyronine (T2) to rats fed diets rich in lipids induces a decrease of cholesterol and triglycerides plasma levels and ...body weight (BW) without inducing liver steatosis. On the basis of these observations we carried out some experimental in vivo studies to assess the effects of multiple high doses of T2 on the pituitary thyroid axis of rats fed diet rich in lipids. Fifteen male Wistar rats were divided into three groups of five animals each. The first group (N group) received standard diet, the second group was fed with a high fat diet (HFD group), while the third group (HFDT2 group) was additionally given T2 intraperitoneally at a dose level of 70 µg/100 g of BW three times a week up to four weeks. At the end of the treatment, blood sample from each animal was collected, centrifuged and the serum was stored at -20°C. The serum concentrations of thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine, thyroxine, adrenocorticotropic hormone, triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase were then determined. In addition, liver of rats was examined by histology in order to assess the presence and degree of steatosis. The administration of T2 to rats fed with a high fat diet suppressed TSH secretion (P=0.013) while no steatosis was observed in the liver of these animals. Our data show that multiple administrations of high doses of T2 to rats fed diets rich in lipid inhibit TSH secretion and prevent the onset of liver steatosis in these animals.
