The aim of the present work is to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of ultrasound scalpel during laparoscopic ovariectomy in the bitch.
Two groups of 10 subjects each, of different races and ...ages, were compared. In the first group, ovariectomy was performed laparoscopically, using harmonic scalpel to remove ovary. In the second group surgery was performed by means of classical laparotomy.
Pre-operative time was similar in both groups. Total operative time, from incision to skin suture, showed significant difference between the two groups, being laparoscopy faster than laparotomy. Partial operative time for bilateral oophorectomy resulted lower using open technique, but, considering each ovary, there was no significant difference in both groups.
The use of harmonic scalpel to perform ovariectomy during laparoscopy is an effective time-sparing surgical approach compared to the already great practicality of laparotomy.
The rapid translation of preclinical cell‐based therapy to restore damaged myocardium has raised questions concerning the best cell type as well as the best delivery route. Intramyocardial injection ...of stem cells is by far the most‐used delivery technique in preclinical studies. In the present study, we assessed the hypothesis that synthetic scaffolds designed to deliver cardiac progenitor cells in the infarcted region of the heart may induce a better differentiation into cardiomyocytes. For the synthesis of PDLLA scaffolds, the Poly (D, L lactic acid) (RESOMER® 207) polimer was used (6.7%) in Dicloromethane/Dimetilformamide (70/30, v/v). For the synthesis of fibrinoin scaffolds, degummed silk fibres were dried and dissolved into 9.3 m LiBr water solution (20% w/v). Scaffolds with different porosities, pore size, and properties were made by freeze‐drying and salt‐leaching. Scaffolds embedded with collagen I and cardiac progenitor cells were implanted in the subcutaneous dorsal region of athymic Nude‐Foxn1nu mice. A foreign body reaction was observed when the scaffolds with or without cells were inoculated in the subcutaneous region of athymic mice.

Pancreata from non-heart beating donors could represent an unlimited source of islets if their cell viability can be efficiently preserved during the time necessary to process the organs by the use ...of a better solution of preservation compared to the classic University of Wisconsin solution. The aim of this study was to determine whether it is possible to obtain functioning "alive islets" from non-heart-beating donors by comparing, on a porcine model, the classic "UW ice-store" method with a two-layer cold storage method (TLM) using oxygenated Perfluorocarbons (PFC) and UW.
Whole pancreata were harvested from 20 NHBDs female pigs with similar characteristics and preserved for 4 h in UW solution (n = 10) or TLM (UW/PFC) solution (n=10). The isolated islets were then evaluated for number, viability, purity, and insulin secretion, also estimated after 8 weeks of cryopreservation.
The total number of islets obtained from isolation, and their function assayed by the insulin stimulation index, before and after cryopreservation, showed a higher value in the TLM group. No significative differences in terms of purity and viability before and after cryopreservation were found when comparing the two groups.
TLM solution for NHBDs porcine pancreata with cold ischemia time lower than 4 h offers significant advantages over UW solution storage, thereby increasing the isolation yield and isolation success rate of the pancreatic porcine islets.
A simple technique for implanting a long-term jugular catheter in piglets under general anesthesia is described. We report our experience in 10 young female pigs with a body weight of 20-30 Kg. The ...surgical procedure involves implantation of a jugular central venous catheter (11Fr polyurethane) tunneled in the subcutaneous fat layer of the neck. This procedure may be performed in about 15 minutes. The maintenance of the catheter is described which allows several daily blood samples to be taken. This procedure reduces both the stress in piglets and the chance of catheter dislodgement due to the animals scratching or rubbing. Blood sampling can be easily performed with a low incidence of infection or thrombosis.

We present a rest-UV-selected sample of 32 lensed galaxies at z ∼ 2 observed with joint Keck/LRIS rest-UV and Keck/MOSFIRE rest-optical spectra behind the clusters Abell 1689, MACS J0717, ...and MACS J1149. The sample pushes towards the faintest UV luminosities observed ($-19 \le {M_{\rm UV}} \le -17$) at this redshift. The fraction of dwarf galaxies identified as Ly α emitters ($\rm EW \ge 20$ Å) is ${X_{\rm LAE}}=33^{+17}_{-12}\,{\rm per\, cent}$. We use the Balmer lines and UV continuum to estimate both the intrinsic EW and the Ly α escape fraction to determine their relative importance in dictating the observed EW distribution. Fainter galaxies (MUV > −19) show larger intrinsic EWs and escape fractions than brighter galaxies. Only galaxies with intrinsic EWs greater than 40 Å have escape fractions larger than 5 per cent. We find little to no anticorrelation between the escape fraction and dust in dwarf galaxies. The volumetric escape fraction of our sample is $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Ly\alpha } = 4.6^{+2.0}_{-1.4}\,{\rm per\, cent}$ in agreement with measurements found elsewhere in the literature. 60 per cent of the total integrated Ly α luminosity density comes from galaxies with EWobs > 20 Å.

Simulations predict that the galaxy populations inhabiting protoclusters may contribute considerably to the total amount of stellar mass growth of galaxies in the early universe. In this ...study, we test these predictions observationally, using the Taralay protocluster (formerly PCl J1001+0220) at z ∼ 4.57 in the COSMOS field. With the Charting Cluster Construction with VUDS and ORELSE (C3VO) survey, we spectroscopically confirmed 44 galaxies within the adopted redshift range of the protocluster (4.48 < z < 4.64) and incorporate an additional 18 galaxies from ancillary spectroscopic surveys. Using a density mapping technique, we estimate the total mass of Taralay to be ∼1.7 × 1015 M⊙, sufficient to form a massive cluster by the present day. By comparing the star formation rate density (SFRD) within the protocluster (SFRDpc) to that of the coeval field (SFRDfield), we find that SFRDpc surpasses the SFRDfield by Δlog (SFRD/M⊙yr−1 Mpc−3) = 1.08 ± 0.32 (or ∼12 ×). The observed contribution fraction of protoclusters to the cosmic SFRD adopting Taralay as a proxy for typical protoclusters is $33.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}^{+8.0~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}}_{-4.3~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}}$, a value ∼2σ higher than the predictions from simulations. Taralay contains three peaks that are 5σ above the average density at these redshifts. Their SFRD is ∼0.5 dex higher than the value derived for the overall protocluster. We show that 68 per cent of all star formation in the protocluster takes place within these peaks, and that the innermost regions of the peaks encase $\sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the total star formation in the protocluster. This study strongly suggests that protoclusters drive stellar mass growth in the early universe and that this growth may proceed in an inside-out manner.

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD; MIM#263200) is one of the most frequent pediatric renal cystic diseases, with an incidence of 1:20,000. It is caused by ...mutations of the
PKHD1
gene, on chromosome 6p12. The clinical spectrum is highly variable, ranging from late-onset milder forms to severe perinatal manifestations. The management of newborns with severe pulmonary insufficiency is challenging, and causes of early death are sepsis or respiratory failure. In cases of massive renal enlargement, early bilateral nephrectomy and peritoneal dialysis may reduce infant mortality. However, there is no conclusive data on the role of surgery, and decision-making is driven by patient’s clinical condition and expertise of the center.
Patient presentation
We hereby describe a preterm female newborn with perinatal, rapid and bilateral, abnormal growth of both kidneys, respiratory failure and initial signs of liver disease. She was subsequently confirmed to be affected by a rare and severe homozygous mutation of the
PKHD1
gene, inherited from both her consanguineous parents. Our patient died 78 days after birth, due to a fungal sepsis which worsened her respiratory insufficiency.
Conclusions
This patient report shows some of the clinical and ethical issues of neonatal ARPKD, and the need of multidisciplinary approach and good communication with the family. Target next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques may guide and support clinicians, as well as guarantee to these patients the most appropriate clinical management, avoiding unnecessary and/or disproportionate treatments.
