The aim ...of this study was to determine the effect of AgNPs on the epigenome of endothelial cells EA.hy926, including the levels of expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) and global DNA methylation patterns. In addition, evaluation of the expression of inflammatory genes and the levels of VCAM-1 protein (miRNA-126 target) was performed. The expression levels of analyzed miRNAs (microRNAs-126, 155 and 146) were reduced significantly and there were not observed changes in inflammatory gene expression. Regarding the levels of protein vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), they increase significantly to 0.5 μM AgNPs at 24 h of exposure. As far as DNA methylation is concerned, we found that AgNPs induce a state of global hyper-methylation. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that direct contact between AgNPs and endothelial cells resulted in the dysregulation of highly enriched and vastly functional miRNAs and DNA hypermethylation, that may have multiple effects on endothelium function and integrity.
Advanced oxidation processes based on ozonation, UV solar radiation, hydrogen peroxide, and persulfate were tested for the complete treatment of a specific landfill leachate. As a post-treatment of ...the advanced oxidation process, an additional adsorption process was carried out using a natural zeolite. Application of the UVsolar/O3/H2O2 process required 140 min of irradiation and the consumption of 0.67 g/L H2O2 to eliminate 56% and 17% of colour and chemical oxygen demand (COD), respectively. When adding persulfate to the system (UVsolar/O3/H2O2/S2O8−2), colour and COD were reduced by 29% and 77%, respectively, with a 0.2 g/L concentration of S2O8−2 requiring 250 min of irradiation time. In an experimental run with landfill leachate, adsorption post-treatment with a natural zeolite resulted in 36%, 99%, and 18% total reductions in COD, ammonium, and chloride, respectively. In another experimental run, adsorption with a zeolite was used as a pre-treatment for the advanced oxidation process (UVsolar/O3/H2O2 and UVsolar/O3/H2O2/S2O8−2). The results were similar to those for adsorption post-treatment, with 30%, 90%, and 20% total reductions in COD, ammonium, and chloride, respectively. Despite improvements, some measured parameters of treated landfill leachate still exceeded Chilean regulations for water quality. Furthermore, Lactuca sativa seeds did not germinate after irrigation with 100% treated landfill leachate or dilutions above 3%. Finally, EC50 values were enhanced during treatment, going from 0.002% for raw landfill leachate to 1.179% after the adsorption process.
•The matrix of pollutants existent in landfill leachate is very complex.•The use of solar energy can enhance the performance of some reagents.•The use of H2O2 and S2O8−2 significantly reduced colour and COD.•The use of zeolite in the adsorption process was very effective at removing ammonium.•Concentration of some pollutants exceeded Chilean regulations for irrigation.
We analyze the top quark decays t → cg and t → cγ mediated by a new neutral gauge boson, identified as Z', in the context of the sequential Z model. We focus our attention on the corresponding ...branching ratios, which are a function of the Z' boson mass. The study range is taken from 2 TeV to 6 TeV, which is compatible with the resonant region of the dileptonic channel reported by ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. Finally, our preliminary results tell us that the branching ratios of t → cg and t → cγ processes can be of the order of 10-11 and 10-13, respectively.
Fungemia in hematologic malignancies (HM) has high mortality. This is a retrospective cohort of adult patients with HM and fungemia between 2012 and 2019 in institutions of Bogotá, Colombia. The ...epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological characteristics are described, and risk factors related to mortality are analyzed. One hundred five patients with a mean age of 48 years (SD 19.0) were identified, 45% with acute leukemia and 37% with lymphomas. In 42%, the HM was relapsed/refractory, 82% ECOG > 3, and 35% received antifungal prophylaxis; 57% were in neutropenia, with an average duration of 21.8 days. In 86 (82%) patients,
spp. was identified, and other yeasts in 18%. The most frequent of the isolates were non-albicans
(61%),
(28%),
(17%), and
(12%). The overall 30-day mortality was 50%. The survival probability at day 30 in patients with leukemia vs. lymphoma/multiple myeloma (MM0 group was 59% (95% CI 46-76) and 41% (95% CI 29-58),
= 0.03, respectively. Patients with lymphoma or MM (HR 1.72; 95% CI 0.58-2.03) and ICU admission (HR 3.08; 95% CI 1.12-3.74) were associated with mortality. In conclusion, in patients with HM, non-albicans
species are the most frequent, and high mortality was identified; moreover, lymphoma or MM and ICU admission were predictors of mortality.

New heavy neutral gauge bosons are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model, those new bosons are associated with additional gauge symmetries. We present a preliminary calculation of the ...branching ratio decay for heavy neutral gauge bosons (Zh) into γH in the most popular version of the Little Higgs models. The calculation involves the main contributions at one-loop level induced by fermions, scalars and gauge bosons. Preliminary results show a very suppressed branching ratio of the order of 10-6.
This research studies the use of vinasse (VS) coming from Pisco and caffeic acid (Caa) from solid coffee waste as chelating agents of this process, to carry out a photo-Fenton process using UVc lamps ...of 254-nm wavelength for 60 min, at the natural pH of the landfill leachate (8.9). Without the chelating agent, there was a removal of UV 254 and COD of 54.2% and 54.7%, respectively, when the photo-Fenton reaction was carried out at pH 3; at pH 6, the removal of UV 254 and COD was 13.1% and 39.2%, respectively, and at pH 8.9, the elimination of UV 254 and COD was 10.8% and 16.1%, respectively. When Caa was used in the landfill leachate (LL) for the photo-catalytic processes carried out at pH 8.9, a removal of 24.1%, 43.0%, and 47.4% of UV 254 was obtained using 5 mg/L, 50 mg/L, and 100 mg/L of Caa. The removal of UV 254 was 27.3%, 30.7%, and 36.3% using 5 mg/L, 50 mg/L, and 100 mg/L of VS, respectively, and the removal of COD was 32.2%, 35.4%, and 39.2% using 5 mg/L, 50 mg/L, and 100 mg/L of VS, respectively. When Caa was used in the LL at pH 8.9, the concentration of total Fe went from 37.5 to 33.2, from 40.2 to 36.8, and from 45.2 to 42.1, using 5 mg/L, 50 mg/L, and 100 mg/L of caffeic acid, respectively. Using VS in the LL at pH 8.9, the concentration of total Fe along the run went from 35.1 to 32.2, from 39.4 to 34.8, and from 42.1 to 40.2, using 5 mg/L, 50 mg/L, and 100 mg/L of VS, respectively. As a result of these processes, it was noted that the use of Caa and VS increases the solubility of Fe at a higher pH.
Histological diagnosis of a clinically suspected nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is recommended before treatment. For NMSC, concordance between the histological subtype of the preoperative biopsy and ...the excision specimen of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has been reported to range from 10% to 81%. No large study on the concordance between NMSC histology seen in a preoperative biopsy with the following tumour specimen from Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) has been performed in a Latin American population.
The aim of this study was to analyse and compare the histological subtype of the incisional biopsies reviewed by the dermatopathologist with the histological subtype of the tumour specimen obtained during MMS interpreted by the dermatopathologist and the Mohs surgeon.
A retrospective analysis of 320 NMSC was performed. The interobserver correlation was based on kappa values.
The mean weighted kappa value between the preoperative NMSC biopsy and intraoperative histological subtype of the tumour specimen from MMS analysed by the Mohs surgeon and the dermatopathologist was 0.22 and 0.24, respectively. The correlation in the histologic subtype of the intraoperative tumour specimen from MMS that was interpreted by the dermatopathologist and Mohs surgeon was 0.58.
Dermatologists need to be aware of the limited value of incisional biopsies to accurately diagnose the histological subtype of a NMSC. The concordance rate in the histological diagnosis of the tumour specimens that were obtained from MMS between the Mohs surgeon and the dermatopathologist is moderate. However, the correlation is low compared with incisional biopsy subtypes.
