Humans have an individual profile of the electroencephalographic power spectra at the 8 to 16Hz frequency during non–rapid eye movement sleep that is stable over time and resistant to experimental ...perturbations. We tested the hypothesis that this electroencephalographic “fingerprint” is genetically determined, by recording 40 monozygotic and dizygotic twins during baseline and recovery sleep after prolonged wakefulness. We show a largely greater similarity within monozygotic than dizygotic pairs, resulting in a heritability estimate of 96%, not influenced by sleep need and intensity. If replicated, these results will establish the electroencephalographic profile during sleep as one of the most heritable traits of humans. Ann Neurol 2008

We study the stability of the non-supersymmetric solutions, identifying perturbative and non-perturbative decay channels for all the backgrounds explicitly available. We also identify likely decay mechanisms for solutions that have not been constructed explicitly but may be expected to exist based on brane web considerations. Finally, we exclude scale separation by constructing universal spin 2 modes with masses comparable to the mass-scale of the cosmological constant.
Dysregulated inflammasome activation contributes to respiratory infections and pathologic airway inflammation. Through basic and translational approaches involving murine models and human genetic ...epidemiology, we show here the importance of the different inflammasomes in regulating inflammatory responses in mice and humans with cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-threatening disorder of the lungs and digestive system. While both contributing to pathogen clearance, NLRP3 more than NLRC4 contributes to deleterious inflammatory responses in CF and correlates with defective NLRC4-dependent IL-1Ra production. Disease susceptibility in mice and microbial colonization in humans occurs in conditions of genetic deficiency of NLRC4 or IL-1Ra and can be rescued by administration of the recombinant IL-1Ra, anakinra. These results indicate that pathogenic NLRP3 activity in CF could be negatively regulated by IL-1Ra and provide a proof-of-concept evidence that inflammasomes are potential targets to limit the pathological consequences of microbial colonization in CF.
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive and degenerative condition. Several pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments are able to improve the OA symptoms and the structural characteristics ...of the affected joints. Among these, infiltrative therapy with hyaluronic acid (HA) is the most used and consolidated procedure for the pain management. The addition of skin conditioning peptides to HA promotes the cartilage remodeling processes and a better permeation of the HA-based gel containing a peptide mixture, CR500®. Furthermore, the topic route of administration is convenient over the routinely used intra-articular injective procedures. In this study, the effectiveness of CR500® was evaluated in terms of improvement of the algo-functional symptoms related to unilateral knee OA.
38 mild and moderate OA patients were enrolled at a screening visit (V-1), treated at baseline visit (V1), and then continued the topical application of CR500® twice a week for 4 weeks, and followed-up for 3 visits (V2-V4) from week 2 to 4. Lequesne Knee Index (LKI) and Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) were collected. Synovial fluid was collected and used for the quantification of neoepitope of type II collagen (C2C), C-terminal telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II), type II collagen propeptide (CPII), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and HA. The expression of CD11c and CD206 was evaluated on cell pellets.
Three patients were excluded, thus 35 patients were included in the analysis. The treatment with CR500® was safe and well tolerated, with 7.9% patients had mild adverse events, not related to the device. The LKI total score showed a significant decrease from V1 to V4. KOOS score also showed a significant improvement of patient condition at V2, V3 and V4 in comparison with V1 for all subscales, except for KOOS sport subscale which improved only from V3. At V1 a negative correlation among KOOS pain subscale values and C2C, CPII and TNFα levels was observed, as well as a positive correlation between KOOS pain subscale and CD11c/CD206 ratio.
CR500® is safe and appear to be effective in improving pain and function in OA patients during the 4 weeks of treatment.

Abstract
The advent of ultrafast laser science offers the unique opportunity to combine Floquet engineering with extreme time resolution, further pushing the optical control of matter into the ...petahertz domain. However, what is the shortest driving pulse for which Floquet states can be realised remains an unsolved matter, thus limiting the application of Floquet theory to pulses composed by many optical cycles. Here we ionized Ne atoms with few-femtosecond pulses of selected time duration and show that a Floquet state can be observed already with a driving field that lasts for only 10 cycles. For shorter pulses, down to 2 cycles, the finite lifetime of the driven state can still be explained using an analytical model based on Floquet theory. By demonstrating that the amplitude and number of Floquet-like sidebands in the photoelectron spectrum can be controlled not only with the driving laser pulse intensity and frequency, but also by its duration, our results add a new lever to the toolbox of Floquet engineering.

Abstract We report on the orbit of the binary system powering the most extreme ultraluminous X-ray pulsar known to date: NGC 5907 ULX-1 (hereafter ULX1). ULX1 has been the target of a substantial ...multi-instrument campaign, mainly in the X-ray band, but no clear counterparts are known in other bands. Although ULX1 is highly variable and pulsations can be transient (regardless of the source flux), the timing data collected so far allow us to investigate the orbit of this system. We find an orbital period P orb = 5.7 − 0.6 + 0.1 days and a projected semi-axis A 1 = 3.1 − 0.9 + 0.8 lt – s . The most likely ephemeris is P orb = 5.6585(6) days, A 1 = 3.1(4) lt-s, and the epoch of ascending nodes passage is T asc = 57751.37(5) MJD. However, there are six similar solutions acceptable within 3 σ . We find further indications that ULX1 is a high-mass X-ray binary. This implies that we are observing its orbit face on, with an inclination <5°.
In this study, the human exposure to the magnetic field emitted by a wireless power transfer (WPT) system during the static recharging operations of a compact electric vehicle (EV) is evaluated. ...Specifically, the influence of the posture of realistic anatomical models, both in standing and lying positions, either inside or outside the EV, is considered. Aligned and misaligned coil configurations of the WPT system placed both in the rear and front position of the car floor are considered as well. Compliance with safety standards and guidelines has proven that reference levels are exceeded in the extreme case of a person lying on the floor with a hand close to the WPT coils, whereas the system is always compliant with the basic restrictions, at least for the considered scenarios.
Geraniol is a natural monoterpene showing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective and anticancer effects. No pharmacokinetic and bioavailability data on geraniol are currently available. We ...therefore performed a systematic study to identify the permeation properties of geraniol across intestinal cells, and its pharmacokinetics and bioavailability after intravenous and oral administration to rats. In addition, we systematically investigated the potential hepatotoxic effects of high doses of geraniol on hepatic phase I, phase II and antioxidant enzymatic activities and undertook a hematochemical analysis on mice. Permeation studies performed via HPLC evidenced geraniol permeability coefficients across an
model of the human intestinal wall for apical to basolateral and basolateral to apical transport of 13.10 ± 2.3 × 10
and 2.1 ± 0.1⋅× 10
cm/min, respectively. After intravenous administration of geraniol to rats (50 mg/kg), its concentration in whole blood (detected via HPLC) decreased following an apparent pseudo-first order kinetics with a half-life of 12.5 ± 1.5 min. The absolute bioavailability values of oral formulations (50 mg/kg) of emulsified geraniol or fiber-adsorbed geraniol were 92 and 16%, respectively. Following emulsified oral administration, geraniol amounts in the cerebrospinal fluid of rats ranged between 0.72 ± 0.08 μg/mL and 2.6 ± 0.2 μg/mL within 60 min. Mice treated with 120 mg/kg of geraniol for 4 weeks showed increased anti-oxidative defenses with no signs of liver toxicity. CYP450 enzyme activities appeared only slightly affected by the high dosage of geraniol.
Background/Aim
Combat sports might result in injuries to the face and teeth. However, it is unclear how often they occur and which sports presents the highest rates. The aim of this study was to ...investigate the prevalence of dentofacial injuries in combat sports participants.
Material and Methods
A systematic review was performed. Six main electronic databases and three grey literature databases were searched. Studies were blindly selected by two reviewers based on pre‐defined eligibility criteria. Studies that evaluated the prevalence of dentofacial injuries (teeth, alveolar bone, jaw, lips, and/or cheekbones) among combat sports participants were considered eligible. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. The software r statistics version was used to perform all meta‐analyses. Cumulative evidence of the included articles was evaluated using GRADE criteria (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation).
Results
From 1104 articles found on all databases, 27 were finally included. Eighteen studies were judged at low, seven at moderate, and two at high risk of bias. The following sports were investigated: boxing, capoeira, fencing, jiu‐jitsu, judo, karate, kendo, kickboxing, kung fu, muay thai, sumo, taekwondo, wrestling, and wushu. Results from the meta‐analysis suggested a dental pooled prevalence of 25.2% (12.3%‐40.8%, i2 = 100%) and dentofacial pooled prevalence of 30.3 (18.1%‐44.1%, i2 = 100%). Considering the sports' categories individually, jiu‐jitsu had the highest pooled prevalence of dentofacial injuries (52.9% 37.9%‐67.8%, i2 = 92%), while judo was the sport with the lowest pooled prevalence (25.0% 7.6%‐48.2%, i2 = 98%). Among Panamerican sports, boxing had the highest prevalence of dental injuries (73.7% 58.7%‐86.3%, i2 = 0%). For dentofacial injuries, the GRADE criteria were considered low.
Conclusions
Overall pooled prevalence of dentofacial injuries in combat sports was approximately 30%. Raising awareness regarding the frequency of these injuries might encourage the use of protective devices and reduce complications related to these incidents.
