The authors' objective was to examine individual variation in activity, using distance traveled as an index, in larvae of Hemileuca lucina . Specifically (1) whether larvae were consistently slow, ...fast or intermediate travelers relative to the group when tested several times within an instar, (2) whether patterns of larval activity (as measured by relative distance traveled) were consistent across instars, and (3) whether larval activity was correlated with larval weight.
Plasma fibronectin was measured in patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, and acute leukemia. In the patients with solid tumors, mean levels were significantly elevated above the mean level of ...age and sex‐matched normals whether the disease was thought to be metastatic or not (P < 0.001). It did not make a difference whether the determinations were done prior to or during chemotherapy. Fibronectin was measured serially in eight hospitalized patients with leukemia during intensive induction chemotherapy. Noramal concentrations were found prior to therapy. However, fibronectin concentration fell on the day following chemotherapy in nine of 12 episodes (P <0.05), and during sepsis in 13 of 13 episodes (P <0.001). Thus, the concentration was influenced by at least two factors: recent chemotherapy and sepsis. Because fibronectin concentration is sensitive to clinical events other than the status of the malignancy, it seems unsuitable as a tumor marker, at least as a single isolated measurement.
Changes in response to attack and the tendency to aggregate were examined in the six larval instars of the buckmoth, Hemileuca lucina (Saturniidae). In response to simulation of attack by a ...parasitoid and of biting by a predator, early instars (I, II, and III) exhibited defensive behavior much more often than escape behaviors, whereas late instar larvae (IV, V, and VI) usually resorted to escape rather than defend themselves. The situations in which attacked larvae were most likely to stimulate other group members to respond were: second and third instar larvae thrashing in response to simulation of a parasitoid or headrearing in response to simulation of a biting predator; and fourth, fifth and sixth instar larvae dropping in response to either stimulus. An index of reaggregation indicated that first instar larvae had difficulty reaggregating; second, third and fourth instar larvae reaggregated quickly; and fifth and sixth larvae dispersed. As larvae developed, the change from predominantly defense to escape behaviors paralleled the decline in tendency to aggregate.

The Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) is a telescope specifically designed for high sensitivity measurements of low-surface-brightness features at cm-wavelength and has unique, important ...capabilities. It consists of two interferometer arrays operating over 13.5-18 GHz that image structures on scales of 0.5-10 arcmin with very low systematics. The Small Array (AMI-SA; ten 3.7-m antennas) couples very well to Sunyaev-Zel'dovich features from galaxy clusters and to many Galactic features. The Large Array (AMI-LA; eight 13-m antennas) has a collecting area ten times that of the AMI-SA and longer baselines, crucially allowing the removal of the effects of confusing radio point sources from regions of low surface-brightness, extended emission. Moreover AMI provides fast, deep object surveying and allows monitoring of large numbers of objects. In this White Paper we review the new science - both Galactic and extragalactic - already achieved with AMI and outline the prospects for much more.
We labeled surface glycoproteins of human platelets by the neuraminidase-galactose oxidase/borotritiide and the periodate/borotritiide methods. When labeled platelets were treated with 1-nM thrombin, ...a minor glycoprotein weighing 68,000–85,000-d was lost from the surface, and a soluble glycoprotein weighing 57,000- 68,000-d was found in the supernatant. Treatment of platelets with ADP, collagen, or the calcium ionophore A23187 did not cause loss of the 68,000–85,000-d glycoprotein from platelet surfaces or appearance of the 57,000–68,000-d glycoprotein in the supernatant. However, trace amounts of the intact 68,000–85,000-d glycoprotein were found in the supernatants of platelets that were not treated with thrombin. The numerous effects of thrombin on platelets could be initiated by cleavage and release the thrombin-sensitive glycoprotein.
Based in D.C.'s Anacostia neighborhood, the firm's office combines a renovation of an 1892 Victorian house (where Becker lives) with an adjacent accessory structure, which serves as the duo's studio ...and a material showcase for prospective clients. Hickling points out that the firm's first large building renovation, the transformation of a fish market in northern Shanghai begun in 2015, is finally slated to be complete this year, after a mid-project pause. After collaborating on Herzog & de Meuron's landmark Tate Modern project, the two globetrotters decided to set up shop (and house) together, but the question remained: his hometown or hers? "We couldn't decide which," says Zeller, 48. From the street, the building presents a subdued facade, but it opens to a remarkably complex courtyard arrangement in which all the individual apartments have their own rooftop terraces while connecting to each other via a shared patio.
