We perform simulations for future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observations of RX J1713.7−3946, a young supernova remnant (SNR) and one of the brightest sources ever discovered in very high energy ...(VHE) gamma rays. Special attention is paid to exploring possible spatial (anti)correlations of gamma rays with emission at other wavelengths, in particular X-rays and CO/H i emission. We present a series of simulated images of RX J1713.7−3946 for CTA based on a set of observationally motivated models for the gamma-ray emission. In these models, VHE gamma rays produced by high-energy electrons are assumed to trace the nonthermal X-ray emission observed by XMM-Newton, whereas those originating from relativistic protons delineate the local gas distributions. The local atomic and molecular gas distributions are deduced by the NANTEN team from CO and H i observations. Our primary goal is to show how one can distinguish the emission mechanism(s) of the gamma rays (i.e., hadronic versus leptonic, or a mixture of the two) through information provided by their spatial distribution, spectra, and time variation. This work is the first attempt to quantitatively evaluate the capabilities of CTA to achieve various proposed scientific goals by observing this important cosmic particle accelerator.
Abstract Objectives The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of inlay-retained fixed dental prostheses (IRFDPs) with a new design made from a zirconia ceramic. ...Methods Twenty-three 3-unit IRFDPs were placed in 23 patients, restoring five second premolars and 18 first molars. Preparations were performed in accordance with general principles for ceramic inlay restorations and modified with a retainer-wing bevel preparation in the enamel at the buccal and oral sides. The frameworks were scanned and milled out of zirconia ceramic, using the InLab CAD/CAM-system and the pontics were veneered with feldspathic ceramic. All IRFDPs were luted adhesively with composite resin. Clinical follow-up examinations were performed annually. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Results All patients with their 23 IRFDPs could be examined clinically after a mean observation time of 20 months. None of the IRFDPs failed. Two ceramic veneers fractured, both of them needed repair. One restoration debonded, but was recemented immediately. However, these technical complications did not affect the clinical function of the IRFDPs involved. Conclusions The clinical outcome of zirconia ceramic IRFDPs with the modified design seems promising.
Context. NGC 253 is one of only two starburst galaxies found to emit γ-rays from hundreds of MeV to multi-TeV energies. Accurate measurements of the very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) and ...high-energy (HE; E > 60 MeV) spectra are crucial to study the underlying particle accelerators, probe the dominant emission mechanism(s) and to study cosmic-ray interaction and transport. Aims. The measurement of the VHE γ-ray emission of NGC 253 published in 2012 by H.E.S.S. was limited by large systematic uncertainties. Here, the most up to date measurement of the γ-ray spectrum of NGC 253 is investigated in both HE and VHE γ-rays. Assuming a hadronic origin of the γ-ray emission, the measurement uncertainties are propagated into the interpretation of the accelerated particle population. Methods. The data of H.E.S.S. observations are reanalysed using an updated calibration and analysis chain. The improved Fermi–LAT analysis employs more than 8 yr of data processed using pass 8. The cosmic-ray particle population is evaluated from the combined HE–VHE γ-ray spectrum using NAIMA in the optically thin case. Results. The VHE γ-ray energy spectrum is best fit by a power-law distribution with a flux normalisation of (1.34 ± 0.14stat ± 0.27sys) × 10−13 cm−2 s−1 TeV1 at 1 TeV – about 40% above, but compatible with the value obtained in Abramowski et al. (2012). The spectral index Γ = 2.39 ± 0.14stat ± 0.25sys is slightly softer than but consistent with the previous measurement within systematic errors. In the Fermi energy range an integral flux of F(E > 60 MeV) = (1.56 ± 0.28stat ± 0.15sys) × 10−8 cm−2 s−1 is obtained. At energies above ∼3 GeV the HE spectrum is consistent with a power-law ranging into the VHE part of the spectrum measured by H.E.S.S. with an overall spectral index Γ = 2.22 ± 0.06stat. Conclusions. Two scenarios for the starburst nucleus are tested, in which the gas in the starburst nucleus acts as either a thin or a thick target for hadronic cosmic rays accelerated by the individual sources in the nucleus. In these two models, the level to which NGC 253 acts as a calorimeter is estimated to a range of fcal = 0.1 to 1 while accounting for the measurement uncertainties. The presented spectrum is likely to remain the most accurate measurements until the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) has collected a substantial set of data towards NGC 253.

Intention to refer patients to physiatrists using 13 case scenarios (10 appropriate referrals, 4 inappropriate referrals) and self-reported number of referrals per year associated with understanding of 7 skills of physiatrists analyzed by multiple logistic regression analyses.
Although most respondents were likely to refer to physiatrists, a wide variation existed in the types of patients referred. Physicians with a greater understanding of the scope of physiatric practice were more likely to refer ( P =.003). Female physicians were more likely to refer than male physicians ( P =.003).
There appears to be an association between an understanding of physiatric practice and primary care practitioners' willingness to refer to PM&R. Primary care physicians should be educated about the benefits of referring patients to physiatrists.
Context. The large jet kinetic power and non-thermal processes occurring in the microquasar SS 433 make this source a good candidate for a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter. Gamma-ray fluxes ...above the sensitivity limits of current Cherenkov telescopes have been predicted for both the central X-ray binary system and the interaction regions of SS 433 jets with the surrounding W50 nebula. Non-thermal emission at lower energies has been previously reported, indicating that efficient particle acceleration is taking place in the system. Aim. We explore the capability of SS 433 to emit VHE gamma rays during periods in which the expected flux attenuation due to periodic eclipses (Porb~ 13.1 days) and precession of the circumstellar disk (Ppre ~ 162 days) periodically covering the central binary system is expected to be at its minimum. The eastern and western SS 433/W50 interaction regions are also examined using the whole data set available. We aim to constrain some theoretical models previously developed for this system with our observations. Methods. We made use of dedicated observations from the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescopes (MAGIC) and High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.) of SS 433 taken from 2006 to 2011. These observation were combined for the first time and accounted for a total effective observation time of 16.5 h, which were scheduled considering the expected phases of minimum absorption of the putative VHE emission. Gamma-ray attenuation does not affect the jet/medium interaction regions. In this case, the analysis of a larger data set amounting to ~40–80 h, depending on the region, was employed. Results. No evidence of VHE gamma-ray emission either from the central binary system or from the eastern/western interaction regions was found. Upper limits were computed for the combined data set. Differential fluxes from the central system are found to be ≲ 10−12–10−13 TeV−1 cm−2 s−1 in an energy interval ranging from ~few × 100 GeV to ~few TeV. Integral flux limits down to ~ 10−12–10−13 ph cm−2 s−1 and ~ 10−13–10−14 ph cm−2 s−1 are obtainedat 300 and 800 GeV, respectively. Our results are used to place constraints on the particle acceleration fraction at the inner jetregions and on the physics of the jet/medium interactions. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that the fraction of the jet kinetic power that is transferred to relativistic protons must be relatively small in SS 433, qp ≤ 2.5 × 10−5, to explain the lack of TeV and neutrino emission from the central system. At the SS 433/W50 interface, the presence of magnetic fields ≳10 μG is derived assuming a synchrotron origin for the observed X-ray emission. This also implies the presence of high-energy electrons with Ee− up to 50 TeV, preventing an efficient production of gamma-ray fluxes in these interaction regions.

FlashCam is a camera proposed for the medium-sized telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). We compare camera trigger rates obtained from measurements with the camera prototype in the ...laboratory and Monte Carlo simulations, when scanning the parameter space of the fully-digital trigger logic and the intensity of a continuous light source mimicking the night sky background (NSB) during on-site operation. The comparisons of the measured data results to the Monte Carlo simulations are used to verify the FlashCam trigger logic and the expected trigger performance.
ABSTRACT
PKS 1830–211 is a known macrolensed quasar located at a redshift of z = 2.5. Its high-energy gamma-ray emission has been detected with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument and ...evidence for lensing was obtained by several authors from its high-energy data. Observations of PKS 1830–211 were taken with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes in 2014 August, following a flare alert by the Fermi-LAT Collaboration. The H.E.S.S observations were aimed at detecting a gamma-ray flare delayed by 20–27 d from the alert flare, as expected from observations at other wavelengths. More than 12 h of good-quality data were taken with an analysis threshold of ∼67 GeV. The significance of a potential signal is computed as a function of the date and the average significance over the whole period. Data are compared to simultaneous observations by Fermi-LAT. No photon excess or significant signal is detected. An upper limit on PKS 1830–211 flux above 67 GeV is computed and compared to the extrapolation of the Fermi-LAT flare spectrum.
