The μ-RWELL is a single-amplification stage resistive MPGD. The amplification element, realized on a polyimide foil micro-patterned with a high density blind-holes (wells), is embedded through a thin ...resistive film, in the readout PCB. The introduction of the resistive layer affects the charge spread on the readout electrodes and suppresses the transition from streamer to spark giving the possibility to achieve large gains (>104). As a drawback the capability to stand high particle fluxes is reduced. In order to get rid of such a limitation different resistive layouts with prompt current evacuation schemes have been designed. In this work we present the study of the performance of the high rate layouts done at PSI, together with the measurement of the space resolution for orthogonal and inclined tracks performed at CERN.
Neutral kaon pairs produced in ϕ decays in anti-symmetric entangled state can be exploited to search for violation of CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance. We present an analysis of the CP-violating ...process ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π+π− based on 1.7 fb−1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the Frascati ϕ-factory DAΦNE. The data are used to perform a measurement of the CPT-violating parameters Δaμ for neutral kaons in the context of the Standard Model Extension framework. The parameters measured in the reference frame of the fixed stars are:Δa0=(−6.0±7.7stat±3.1syst)×10−18 GeV,ΔaX=(0.9±1.5stat±0.6syst)×10−18 GeV,ΔaY=(−2.0±1.5stat±0.5syst)×10−18 GeV,ΔaZ=(3.1±1.7stat±0.5syst)×10−18 GeV. These are presently the most precise measurements in the quark sector of the Standard Model Extension.
We have searched for a light vector boson U, the possible carrier of a “dark force”, with the KLOE detector at the DAΦNE e+e− collider, motivated by astrophysical evidence for the presence of dark ...matter in the Universe. Using e+e− collisions collected with an integrated luminosity of 239.3 pb−1, we look for a dimuon mass peak in the reaction e+e−→μ+μ−γ, corresponding to the decay U→μ+μ−. We find no evidence for a U vector boson signal. We set a 90% CL upper limit for the mixing parameter squared between the photon and the U boson of 1.6×10−5 to 8.6×10−7 for the mass region 520<mU<980 MeV.
The μ-RWELL is a new generation Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector, composed of two elements: the cathode and the μ-RWELL_PCB including the amplification stage, realized with a polyimide structure ...micro-patterned with a blind-hole matrix, embedded through a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) resistive layer with the readout PCB. Different layouts of the resistive stage have been studied: the simplest one is based on a single DLC layer with edge grounding, suitable for low rate applications (30–40 kHz/cm2). More sophisticated schemes are under study for high-rate purposes (up to 2–3 MHz/cm2) in order to optimize the performance and the constructive process. For the phase-2 upgrade of the LHCb muon detector the experiment is targeting a luminosity of 2×1034 cm−2 s−1, with strong requirements on the robustness and detection efficiency of the muon system. We report on the ongoing R&D, showing also the latest measured performances of the new high-rate versions of the detector.
We have measured the running of the effective QED coupling constant α(s) in the time-like region 0.6<s<0.975 GeV with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE using the Initial-State Radiation process e+e−→μ+μ−γ. ...It represents the first measurement of the running of α(s) in this energy region. Our results show a more than 5σ significance of the hadronic contribution to the running of α(s), which is the strongest direct evidence both in time- and space-like regions achieved in a single measurement. By using the e+e−→π+π− cross section measured by KLOE, the real and imaginary parts of the shift Δα(s) have been extracted. From a fit of the real part of Δα(s) and assuming the lepton universality the branching ratio BR(ω→μ+μ−)=(6.6±1.4stat±1.7syst)⋅10−5 has been determined.
Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations (VGAMs) can, through multiple mechanisms, complicate with hydrocephalus (HCP). It is generally agreed that management strategies in this scenario should focus ...on endovascular embolizations. Treatment options for non-responders, however, have been only scarcely reported upon.
We present a nine-month-old boy with a mural type VGAM complicated by HCP. Despite endovascular occlusion of the sole feeder, the child exhibited hydrocephalus progression prompting an Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV). This procedure restored a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation otherwise impaired by aqueduct obstruction. Later, a new feeder arose and a second embolization was ultimately needed in order to achieve VGAM regression. Throughout four years of follow up, the child attained all developmental marks.
VGAMs are prone to hydrocephalus development as there is both an underlying venous congestion and a mechanical, obstructive component. Although there is a rationale for addressing both components, the underlying AV shunts and subsequent venous pressure elevations usually determine failure of traditional CSF shunting strategies. It is therefore challenging to manage HCP in patients who failed to improve following endovascular embolizations. For such cases, ETV stands as an elegant minimal invasive alternative with potential to provide a more physiologic drainage route and thus better allow for neurological development.

Much of the valuable information in supporting decision making processes originates in text-based documents. Although these documents can be effectively searched and ranked by modern search engines, actionable knowledge need to be extracted and transformed in a structured form before being used in a decision process. In this paper we describe how the discovery of semantic information embedded in natural language documents can be viewed as an optimization problem aimed at assigning a sequence of labels (hidden states) to a set of interdependent variables (textual tokens). Dependencies among variables are efficiently modeled through Conditional Random Fields, an indirected graphical model able to represent the distribution of labels given a set of observations. The Markov property of these models prevent them to take into account long-range dependencies among variables, which are indeed relevant in Natural Language Processing. In order to overcome this limitation we propose an inference method based on Integer Programming formulation of the problem, where long distance dependencies are included through non-deterministic soft constraints.
Abstract
Flash Therapy is a revolution in cancer cure since it spares healthy tissue from the damage of ionization radiations without decreasing its effectiveness in tumor control. To allow the ...implementation of the FLASH therapy concept into actual clinical use and treat deep tumors, Very High Electron Energy (VHEE) should be achieved in a range of 50-150 MeV. In the framework of the VHEE project carried out at Sapienza University, in collaboration with INFN, we investigate the main issues in designing a compact C band (5.712 GHz) electron linacs for FLASH Radiotherapy. In this paper, we describe the design strategy, the electromagnetic properties, and the first prototypes of the RF structures to be tested at Sapienza University.
