In the quest for direct dark matter detection, innovative approaches to lower the detection threshold and explore the sub-GeV mass range, have gained high relevance in the last decade. This study ...presents the pioneering use of Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) as a low-temperature calorimeter for probing dark matter-electron interactions within the DAREDEVIL (DARk-mattEr DEVIces for Low energy detection) project. Our experimental setup features a GaAs crystal at an ultralow temperature of 15 mK, coupled with a Neutron Transmutation Doped Germanium (NTD-Ge) thermal sensor for precise energy estimation. This configuration is the first step towards detecting single electrons scattered by dark matter particles within the GaAs crystal, to improve the sensitivity to low-mass dark matter candidates significantly. Taking advantage of the production of optical phonons in polar materials such as GaAs gives the possibility to study the scattering of sub-MeV dark matter. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the detector’s response, using a calibration spectrum using
α
particles and X-ray events. While the results do not meet the ambitious eV scale threshold yet, they establish a solid benchmark for assessing the detector’s current performance and sensitivity. This work not only highlights the detector’s potential but also sets the stage for future enhancements aimed at achieving the eV threshold, underscoring the promising direction of this detector technology. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of using GaAs as a cryogenic calorimeter and hence open new avenues for investigating the elusive nature of dark matter through innovative direct detection techniques.
Delayed single- and few-electron emissions plague dual-phase time projection chambers, limiting their potential to search for light-mass dark matter. This paper examines the origins of these events ...in the XENON1T experiment. Characterization of the intensity of delayed electron backgrounds shows that the resulting emissions are correlated, in time and position, with high-energy events and can effectively be vetoed. In this work we extend previous S2-only analyses down to a single electron. From this analysis, after removing the correlated backgrounds, we observe rates <30 events/(electron×kg×day) in the region of interest spanning 1 to 5 electrons. We derive 90% confidence upper limits for dark matter-electron scattering, first direct limits on the electric dipole, magnetic dipole, and anapole interactions, and bosonic dark matter models, where we exclude new parameter space for dark photons and solar dark photons.
The XENON100 experiment, in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, is designed to search for dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) scattering off 62 kg of ...liquid xenon in an ultralow background dual-phase time projection chamber. In this Letter, we present first dark matter results from the analysis of 11.17 live days of nonblind data, acquired in October and November 2009. In the selected fiducial target of 40 kg, and within the predefined signal region, we observe no events and hence exclude spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections above 3.4 × 10⁻⁴⁴ cm² for 55 GeV/c² WIMPs at 90% confidence level. Below 20 GeV/c², this result constrains the interpretation of the CoGeNT and DAMA signals as being due to spin-independent, elastic, light mass WIMP interactions.

•We used FMDV strain A/Argentina/2001 Virus-like Particles (VLPs) obtained in mammalian cell cultures to formulate vaccines.•VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA206 induced FMDV-specific antibody titers, VNT and ...virus-specific T response in a murine model.•VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA206 protected 100 % of vaccinated mice.•In cattle, VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA206 induced FMDV-specific antibody titers, VNT and IgG2 antibodies.•VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA206 formulations elicited total and neutralizing anti-FMDV Ab titers corresponding to an Expected Percentage of Protection (EPP) above 90 % in cattle.
Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) causes economy losses and is controlled by vaccination in many countries. Vaccine formulations based on empty capsids or Virus-Like Particles (VLPs) have the advantage of avoiding the biological hazard of using infectious FMDV, albeit are poorly immunogenic. Recently, we have described that ISPA a new Immune Stimulating Complex adjuvant, is useful to improve the response against FMD of vaccines that use inactivated virus. Now, the adjuvant effects of ISPA and ISA 206 (water/oil/water) on a VLPs-based FMD vaccine were evaluated.
VLPs (strain A/Argentina/2001) were obtained in mammalian cell cultures and their elicitation of an immune response against FMDV with and without ISPA or ISA 206 was evaluated in mice as a first approach. Notably, VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA 206 vaccines induced protection against viral challenge in 100 % of mice, while protection induced by VLPs alone was of 40 %. Total and neutralizing FMDV antibodies were higher in the VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA 206 groups compared to the VLPs group. VLPs-ISPA induced significantly higher (p < 0.001) IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b and IgG3 titers than the VLPs vaccine. Moreover, in comparison with non-adjuvanted VLPs, VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA 206 elicited an increased virus-specific T response, including higher IFNγ+/CD8 + lymphocyte production in mice. When these vaccines were tested in calves, antibody titers reached an Expected Percentage of Protection (EPP) above 90 % in the case of the VLPs-ISPA and VLPs-ISA 206 vaccines, while, in the VLPs group, EPP reached 25 %.
IFNγ levels secreted by mononuclear cells of VLP-ISPA-vaccinated cattle were significantly higher than in the VLPs group. Overall, the results demonstrate that VLPs-ISPA or VLPs-ISA 206 are promising formulations for the development of a novel FMD vaccine.
We perform a low-mass dark matter search using an exposure of 30 kg×yr with the XENON100 detector. By dropping the requirement of a scintillation signal and using only the ionization signal to ...determine the interaction energy, we lowered the energy threshold for detection to 0.7 keV for nuclear recoils. No dark matter detection can be claimed because a complete background model cannot be constructed without a primary scintillation signal. Instead, we compute an upper limit on the WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section under the assumption that every event passing our selection criteria could be a signal event. Using an energy interval from 0.7 keV to 9.1 keV, we derive a limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section that excludes WIMPs with a mass of 6 GeV/c2 above 1.4×10−41 cm2 at 90% confidence level.
We report on weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search results in the XENON100 detector using a nonrelativistic effective field theory approach. The data from science run II (34 kg×224.6 ...live days) were reanalyzed, with an increased recoil energy interval compared to previous analyses, ranging from (6.6–240) keVnr. The data are found to be compatible with the background-only hypothesis. We present 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling constants of WIMP-nucleon effective operators using a binned profile likelihood method. We also consider the case of inelastic WIMP scattering, where incident WIMPs may up-scatter to a higher mass state, and set exclusion limits on this model as well.
