We present recent contemporaneous X-ray and optical observations of the Be/X-ray binary system A 0535+26 with the Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and several ground-based observatories. These new ...observations are put into the context of the rich historical data (since ~1978) and discussed in terms of the neutron-star-Be-disk interaction. The Be circumstellar disk was exceptionally large just before the 2009 December giant outburst, which may explain the origin of the unusual recent X-ray activity of this source. We found a peculiar evolution of the pulse profile during this giant outburst, with the two main components evolving in opposite ways with energy. A hard 30-70 mHz X-ray quasi-periodic oscillation was detected with GBM during this 2009 December giant outburst. It becomes stronger with increasing energy and disappears at energies below 25 keV. In the long term a strong optical/X-ray correlation was found for this system, however in the medium term the H alpha equivalent width and the V-band brightness showed an anti-correlation after ~2002 August. Each giant X-ray outburst occurred during a decline phase of the optical brightness, while the H alpha showed a strong emission. In late 2010 and before the 2011 February outburst, rapid V/R variations are observed in the strength of the two peaks of the H alpha line. These had a period of ~25 days and we suggest the presence of a global one-armed oscillation to explain this scenario. A general pattern might be inferred, where the disk becomes weaker and shows V/R variability beginning ~6 months following a giant outburst.

We are developing a detector of single photons for application in Cherenkov imaging counters, based on the use of a multilayer architecture of THGEM electron multipliers coupled to a solid state CsI ...photocathode. The main goals of our project are ion feedback suppression down to a few per cent level, large gain, fast response, good time resolution, insensitivity to magnetic field and large detector size. We report about the project status and perspectives.
The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on diffractively produced pi(-) pi(-) pi(+) final states using a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a ...stationary proton target. This data set allows for a systematic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion mass, 0.5 < m(3 pi) < 2.5 GeV/c(2), and in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, 0.1 < t' < 1.0 (GeV/c)(2). This two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant 3 pi production. In this paper, we present detailed studies on selected 3p partial waves with J(PC) = 0(-+) ,1(++) ,2(-+) ,2(++) ,and 4(++). In these waves, we observe the well-known groundstate mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson a(1)(1420) decaying into f(0) (980)pi. In addition, we present the results of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the pi(-)pi(+) subsystem with I(G)J(PC) = 0(+)0(++) in various partial waves from the pi(-)pi(-)pi(+) data. Evidence is found for correlation of the f (0)(980) and f(0)(1500) appearing as intermediate pi(-)pi(+) isobars in the decay of the known pi(1800) and pi(2)(1880).
Simultaneous bilateral retinal detachment (RD) is very rare and its incidence has not been very well characterised.
Retrospective review of RD cases treated at the Jules Gonin Eye Hospital between ...1999 and 2010.
Over the 11 year period, 10 patients (20 eyes) with simultaneous bilateral RD were identified (average incidence among RD= 0.9 %). Mean age: 46.4 ± 17.6 years, with a M : F Ratio of 6 : 4. Pseudophakia was present in 10 eyes and myopia ≥-5.0 dioptres in 11 eyes. Visual symptoms were unilateral in 7 patients, bilateral in 2 patients and absent in one patient. RD was macula-on in 15 eyes and macula-off in 5 eyes. Atrophic holes were present in 11 eyes, U-tears in 6 eyes and a combination in 3 eyes. Primary surgery consisted of buckle surgery (11 eyes), vitrectomy (6 eyes) and combines technique (3 eyes). The final anatomical success rate was 100 %. Mean follow-up time was 22.7 ± 4.95 months.
The incidence of bilateral simultaneous RD appears to be very low and surgical success rates are excellent. Bilateral pre-operative dilated fundoscopy is mandatory, as the majority of patients have unilateral symptoms.

The purpose of this article was to review the literature concerning the need to splint implants together when restoring them with a provisional restoration immediately after implant placement.
The ...literature is reviewed concerning the rationale for splinting teeth and reports concerning the efficacy of splinting implants together. Based on this team’s experience with a prospective series of consecutive 2 to 5 unit provisionalization cases, guidelines are included with case examples for understanding the technique.
As long as canine guidance is present, and occlusion is stable, multiunit single quadrant restorations do not need to be splinted when provisionalized.
Aims. The Earth Occultation Technique (EOT) has been applied to Fermi’s Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) to perform all-sky monitoring for a predetermined catalog of hard X-ray/soft γ-ray sources. In ...order to search for sources not in the catalog, thus completing the catalog and reducing a source of systematic error in EOT, an imaging method has been developed – Imaging with a Differential filter using the Earth Occultation Method (IDEOM). Methods. IDEOM is a tomographic imaging method that takes advantage of the orbital precession of the Fermi satellite. Using IDEOM, all-sky reconstructions have been generated for ~4 years of GBM data in the 12–50 keV, 50–100 keV and 100–300 keV energy bands in search of sources otherwise unmodeled by the GBM occultation analysis. Results. IDEOM analysis resulted in the detection of 57 sources in the 12–50 keV energy band, 23 sources in the 50–100 keV energy band, and 7 sources in the 100–300 keV energy band. Seventeen sources were not present in the original GBM-EOT catalog and have now been added. We also present the first joined averaged spectra for four persistent sources detected by GBM using EOT and by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on Fermi: NGC 1275, 3C 273, Cen A, and the Crab.
