Recognizing the actions, plans, and goals of a person in an unconstrained environment is a key feature that future robotic systems will need in order to achieve a natural human-machine interaction. ...Indeed, we humans are constantly understanding and predicting the actions and goals of others, which allows us to interact in intuitive and safe ways. While action and plan recognition are tasks that humans perform naturally and with little effort, they are still an unresolved problem from the point of view of artificial intelligence. The immense variety of possible actions and plans that may be encountered in an unconstrained environment makes current approaches be far from human-like performance. In addition, while very different types of algorithms have been proposed to tackle the problem of activity, plan, and goal (intention) recognition, these tend to focus in only one part of the problem (e.g., action recognition), and techniques that address the problem as a whole have been not so thoroughly explored. This review is meant to provide a general view of the problem of activity, plan, and goal recognition as a whole. It presents a description of the problem, both from the human perspective and from the computational perspective, and proposes a classification of the main types of approaches that have been proposed to address it (logic-based, classical machine learning, deep learning, and brain-inspired), together with a description and comparison of the classes. This general view of the problem can help on the identification of research gaps, and may also provide inspiration for the development of new approaches that address the problem in a unified way.
The majority of STEM disciplines in Canada are male-dominated and there is a significant lack of programming available to girls. The Girls Get WISE program is a university-based program that is ...funded by the federal government, the university, and corporate sponsorship. This program is delivered in person by educational professionals, science students, and past participants. By engaging girls in hands-on interactive STEM activities in a safe and fun space, this program provides an opportunity for young women to showcase their talents and excitement for science-based topics. The features of this program and its evaluation over a 10 year period are described here.
Four novel CeIII mononuclear complexes of formulas Ce(ntfa)3(MeOH)2 (1), Ce(ntfa)3(5,5′-Me2bipy) (2), Ce(ntfa)3(terpy) (3), and Ce(ntfa)3(bipy)2 (4), where ntfa = ...4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dionato, 5,5′-Me2bipy = 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridyl, terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine, and bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine, have been synthesized and structurally characterized with CeIII displaying coordination numbers of 8, 8, 9, and 10, respectively. Magnetic measurements indicate that all the complexes show a field-induced single-ion magnet behavior under a small applied dc field. The magnetic analysis shows the relevance of the different spin relaxation mechanisms in the magnetic relaxation of the CeIII compounds, with special emphasis on the local-mode process. Multiconfigurational calculations were also performed to get more information on the axiality of the compounds.

The Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission represents the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) next investment in satellite ocean color and the study of Earth’s ...ocean–atmosphere system, enabling new insights into oceanographic and atmospheric responses to Earth’s changing climate. PACE objectives include extending systematic cloud, aerosol, and ocean biological and biogeochemical data records, making essential ocean color measurements to further understand marine carbon cycles, food-web processes, and ecosystem responses to a changing climate, and improving knowledge of how aerosols influence ocean ecosystems and, conversely, how ocean ecosystems and photochemical processes affect the atmosphere. PACE objectives also encompass management of fisheries, large freshwater bodies, and air and water quality and reducing uncertainties in climate and radiative forcing models of the Earth system. PACE observations will provide information on radiative properties of land surfaces and characterization of the vegetation and soils that dominate their ref lectance. The primary PACE instrument is a spectrometer that spans the ultraviolet to shortwave-infrared wavelengths, with a ground sample distance of 1 km at nadir. This payload is complemented by two multiangle polarimeters with spectral ranges that span the visible to near-infrared region. Scheduled for launch in late 2022 to early 2023, the PACE observatory will enable significant advances in the study of Earth’s biogeochemistry, carbon cycle, clouds, hydrosols, and aerosols in the ocean–atmosphere–land system. Here, we present an overview of the PACE mission, including its developmental history, science objectives, instrument payload, observatory characteristics, and data products.
Enterococci are lactic acid bacteria of importance in food, public health and medical microbiology. Many strains produce bacteriocins, some of which have been well characterized. This review ...describes the structural and genetic characteristics of enterocins, the bacteriocins produced by enterococci. Some of these can be grouped with typical bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria according to traditional classification, whereas others are atypical and structurally distinct from the general classes of bacteriocins. These atypical enterocins recently played an important role in and prompted reclassification of the class II bacteriocins into a new scheme. In this review, a more simplified classification scheme for enterocins based on amino acid sequence homologies is proposed. Enterocins are of interest for their diversity and potential for use as food biopreservatives. The emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant enterococci among agents of nosocomial disease and the presence of virulence factors among food isolates requires a careful safety evaluation of isolates intended for potential biotechnical use. Nevertheless, enterococcal bacteriocins produced by heterologous hosts or added as cell-free preparations may still be attractive for application in food preservation.
Sixteen novel circular rep-encoding DNA sequences with high sequence homologies to previously described SPHINX and BMMF sequences were isolated for the first time from non-bovine foods (pork, wild ...boar, chicken meat, Alaska pollock, pangasius, black tiger shrimp, apple, carrot, and sprouts from alfalfa, radish, and broccoli). The phylogenetic analysis of the full-length circular genomes grouped these together with previously described representatives of SPHINX/BMMF group 1 and 2 sequences (eight in each group). The characterization of genome lengths, genes present, and conserved structures confirmed their relationship to the known SPHINX/BMMF sequences. Further analysis of iteron-like tandem repeats of SPHINX/BMMF group 1-related genomes revealed a correlation with both full-length sequence tree branches as well as Rep protein sequence tree branches and was able to differentiate subtypes of SPHINX/BMMF group 1 members. For the SPHINX/BMMF group 2 members, a distinct grouping of sequences into two clades (A and B) with subgroups could be detected. A deeper investigation of potential functional regions upstream of the
gene of the new SPHINX/BMMF group 2 sequences revealed homologies to the
and
regions of known plasmid groups that replicate via the rolling circle mechanism. Phylogenetic analyses were accomplished by a Rep protein sequence analysis of different ssDNA viruses, pCRESS, and plasmids with the known replication mechanism, as this yielded deeper insights into the relationship of SPHINX/BMMF group 1 and 2 Rep proteins. A clear relation of these proteins to the Rep proteins of plasmids could be confirmed. Interestingly, for SPHINX/BMMF group 2 members, the relationship to rolling circle replication plasmids could also be verified. Furthermore, a relationship of SPHINX/BMMF group 1 Rep proteins to theta-replicating plasmid Reps is discussed.
We sequenced and comprehensively analysed the genomic architecture of 98 fluorescent pseudomonads isolated from different symptomatic and asymptomatic tissues of almond and a few other Prunus spp. ...Phylogenomic analyses, genome mining, field pathogenicity tests, and in vitro ice nucleation and antibiotic sensitivity tests were integrated to improve knowledge of the biology and management of bacterial blast and bacterial canker of almond. We identified Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, P. cerasi, and P. viridiflava as almond canker pathogens. P. syringae pv. syringae caused both canker and foliar (blast) symptoms. In contrast, P. cerasi and P. viridiflava only caused cankers, and P. viridiflava appeared to be a weak pathogen of almond. Isolates belonging to P. syringae pv. syringae were the most frequently isolated among the pathogenic species/pathovars, composing 75% of all pathogenic isolates. P. cerasi and P. viridiflava isolates composed 8.3 and 16.7% of the pathogenic isolates, respectively. Laboratory leaf infiltration bioassays produced results distinct from experiments in the field with both P. cerasi and P. syringae pv. syringae, causing significant necrosis and browning of detached leaves, whereas P. viridiflava conferred moderate effects. Genome mining revealed the absence of key epiphytic fitness-related genes in P. cerasi and P. viridiflava genomic sequences, which could explain the contrasting field and laboratory bioassay results. P. syringae pv. syringae and P. cerasi isolates harboured the ice nucleation protein, which correlated with the ice nucleation phenotype. Results of sensitivity tests to copper and kasugamycin showed a strong linkage to putative resistance genes. Isolates harbouring the ctpV gene showed resistance to copper up to 600 μg/ml. In contrast, isolates without the ctpV gene could not grow on nutrient agar amended with 200 μg/ml copper, suggesting ctpV can be used to phenotype copper resistance. All isolates were sensitive to kasugamycin at the label-recommended rate of 100μg/ml.
