ABSTRACT
We investigate the intrinsic scatter in the chemical abundances of a sample of metal-poor (Fe/H < −2.5) Milky Way halo stars. We draw our sample from four historic surveys and focus our ...attention on the stellar Mg, Ca, Ni, and Fe abundances. Using these elements, we investigate the chemical enrichment of these metal-poor stars using a model of stochastic chemical enrichment. Assuming that these stars have been enriched by the first generation of massive metal-free stars, we consider the mass distribution of the enriching population alongside the stellar mixing and explosion energy of their supernovae. For our choice of stellar yields, our model suggests that the most metal-poor stars were enriched, on average, by $\hat{N}_{\star }=5^{+13}_{-3}~(1\sigma)$ Population III stars. This is comparable to the number of enriching stars inferred for the most metal-poor DLAs. Our analysis therefore suggests that some of the lowest mass structures at z ∼ 3 contain the chemical products from < 13(2σ) Population III enriched minihaloes. The inferred IMF is consistent with that of a Salpeter distribution and there is a preference towards ejecta from minimally mixed hypernovae. However, the estimated enrichment model is sensitive to small changes in the stellar sample. An offset of ∼ 0.1 dex in the Mg/Ca abundance is shown to be sensitive to the inferred number of enriching stars. We suggest that this method has the potential to constrain the multiplicity of the first generation of stars, but this will require: (1) a stellar sample whose systematic errors are well understood; and, (2) documented uncertainties associated with nucleosynthetic yields.
The integrated light of a stellar population, measured through photometric filters that are sensitive to the presence of young stars, is often used to infer the star formation rate (SFR) for that ...population. However, these techniques rely on an assumption that star formation is a continuous process, whereas in reality stars form in discrete spatially and temporally correlated structures. This discreteness causes the light output to undergo significant time-dependent fluctuations, which, if not accounted for, introduce systematic errors in the inferred SFRs due to the intrinsic distribution of luminosities at any fix SFR. We use slug a code that Stochastically Lights Up Galaxies, to simulate galaxies undergoing stochastic star formation. We then use these simulations to present a quantitative analysis of these effects and provide tools for calculating probability distribution functions of SFRs given a set of observations. We show that, depending on the SFR tracer used, stochastic fluctuations can produce non-trivial errors at SFRs as high as 1 M⊙ yr−1 and biases ≳ 0.5 dex at the lowest SFRs. We emphasize that due to the stochastic behaviour of blue SFR tracers, one cannot assign a deterministic single value to the SFR of an individual galaxy, but we suggest methods by which future analyses that rely on integrated-light indicators can properly account for these stochastic effects.

, which together with new mass estimates for the hot CGM may resolve the galactic missing baryons problem. Future analyses of halo gas should focus on the underlying astrophysics governing the CGM, rather than processes that simply expel the medium from the halo.
We present the first high-resolution map of the cold molecular gas distribution as traced by CO(2−1) emission with ALMA in a long ram pressure stripped tail. The Norma cluster galaxy ESO 137-001 is ...undergoing a strong interaction with the surrounding intracluster medium and is one of the nearest jellyfish galaxies with a long multiphase and multicomponent tail. We have mapped the full extent of the tail at 1″ (350 pc) angular resolution and found a rich distribution of mostly compact CO regions extending to nearly 60 kpc in length and 25 kpc in width. In total, about 109 M of molecular gas was detected with ALMA. From comparison with previous APEX observations, we also infer the presence of a substantial extended molecular component in the tail. The ALMA CO features are found predominantly at the heads of numerous small-scale (∼1.5 kpc) fireballs (i.e., star-forming clouds with linear streams of young stars extending toward the galaxy) but also large-scale (∼8 kpc) superfireballs and double-sided fireballs that have additional diffuse ionized gas tails extending in the direction opposite the stellar tails. The new data help to shed light on the origin of the molecular tail; CO filaments oriented in the direction of the tail are likely young molecular features formed in situ, whereas large CO features tilted with respect to the tail may have originated from dense gas complexes that were gradually pushed away from the disk.
ABSTRACT
We present a study of the metal-enriched cool halo gas traced by Mg ii absorption around 228 galaxies at z ∼ 0.8–1.5 within 28 quasar fields from the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies ...survey. We observe no significant evolution in the Mg ii equivalent width versus impact parameter relation and in the Mg ii covering fraction compared to surveys at z ≲ 0.5. The stellar mass, along with distance from galaxy centre, appears to be the dominant factor influencing the Mg ii absorption around galaxies. With a sample that is 90 per cent complete down to a star formation rate of ≈0.1 $\rm M_\odot yr^{-1}$ and up to impact parameters ≈250–350 kpc from quasars, we find that the majority ($67^{+12}_{-15}$ per cent or 14/21) of the Mg ii absorption systems are associated with more than one galaxy. The complex distribution of metals in these richer environments adds substantial scatter to previously reported correlations. Multiple galaxy associations show on average five times stronger absorption and three times higher covering fraction within twice the virial radius than isolated galaxies. The dependence of Mg ii absorption on galaxy properties disfavours the scenario in which a widespread intragroup medium dominates the observed absorption. This leaves instead gravitational interactions among group members or hydrodynamic interactions of the galaxy haloes with the intragroup medium as favoured mechanisms to explain the observed enhancement in the Mg ii absorption strength and cross-section in rich environments.
In the current cosmological model, only the three lightest elements were created in the first few minutes after the Big Bang; all other elements were produced later in stars. To date, however, heavy ...elements have been observed in all astro physical environments. We report the detection of two gas clouds with no discernible elements heavier than hydrogen. These systems exhibit the lowest heavy-element abundance in the early universe, and thus are potential fuel for the most metal-poor halo stars. The detection of deuterium in one system at the level predicted by primordial nucleosynthesis provides a direct confirmation of the standard cosmological model. The composition of these clouds further implies that the transport of heavy elements from galaxies to their surroundings is highly inhomogeneous.
We present the results of a blind survey of Lyman limit systems (LLSs) detected in absorption against 105 quasars at z ~ 3 using the blue sensitive MagE spectrograph at the Magellan Clay telescope. ...By searching for Lyman limit absorption in the wavelength range lambda ~ 3000-4000 Angstrom, we measure the number of LLSs per unit redshift l(z) = 1.21 + or - 0.28 at z ~ 2.8. Using a stacking analysis, we further estimate the mean free path of ionizing photons in the z ~ 3 universe lambda super(912) sub(mfp) = 100 + or - 29 h super(-1) sub(70.4) Mpc. Combined with our LLS survey, we conclude that systems with log N sub(H I) > or =, slanted 17.5 cm super(-2) contribute only ~40% to the observed mean free path at these redshifts. Furthermore, with the aid of photoionization modeling, we infer that a population of ionized and metal poor systems is likely required to reproduce the metal line strengths observed in a composite spectrum of 20 LLSs with log N sub(H I) ~ 17.5-19 cm super(-2) at z ~ 2.6-3.0. Finally, with a simple toy model, we deduce that gas in the halos of galaxies can alone account for the totality of LLSs at z <, ~3, but a progressively higher contribution from the intergalactic medium is required beyond z ~ 3.5. We also show how the weakly evolving number of LLSs per unit redshift at z <, ~3 can be modeled either by requiring that the spatial extent of the circumgalactic medium is redshift invariant in the last ~10 Gyr of cosmic evolution or by postulating that LLSs arise in halos that are rare fluctuations in the density field at each redshift.
We present a survey for metal absorption systems traced by neutral oxygen over 3.2 < z < 6.5. Our survey uses Keck/ESI and VLT/X-Shooter spectra of 199 QSOs with redshifts up to 6.6. In total, we ...detect 74 O i absorbers, of which 57 are separated from the background QSO by more than 5000 km s−1. We use a maximum likelihood approach to fit the distribution of O i λ1302 equivalent widths in bins of redshift and from this determine the evolution in number density of absorbers with W1302 > 0.05 , of which there are 49 nonproximate systems in our sample. We find that the number density does not monotonically increase with decreasing redshift, as would naively be expected from the buildup of metal-enriched circumgalactic gas with time. The number density over 4.9 < z < 5.7 is a factor of 1.7-4.1 lower (68% confidence) than that over 5.7 < z < 6.5, with a lower value at z < 5.7 favored with 99% confidence. This decrease suggests that the fraction of metals in a low-ionization phase is larger at z ∼ 6 than at lower redshifts. Absorption from highly ionized metals traced by C iv is also weaker in higher-redshift O i systems, supporting this picture. The evolution of O i absorbers implies that metal-enriched circumgalactic gas at z ∼ 6 is undergoing an ionization transition driven by a strengthening ultraviolet background. This in turn suggests that the reionization of the diffuse intergalactic medium may still be ongoing at or only recently ended by this epoch.
