Abstract
Motivation
While deep-learning algorithms have demonstrated outstanding performance in semantic image segmentation tasks, large annotation datasets are needed to create accurate models. ...Annotation of histology images is challenging due to the effort and experience required to carefully delineate tissue structures, and difficulties related to sharing and markup of whole-slide images.
Results
We recruited 25 participants, ranging in experience from senior pathologists to medical students, to delineate tissue regions in 151 breast cancer slides using the Digital Slide Archive. Inter-participant discordance was systematically evaluated, revealing low discordance for tumor and stroma, and higher discordance for more subjectively defined or rare tissue classes. Feedback provided by senior participants enabled the generation and curation of 20 000+ annotated tissue regions. Fully convolutional networks trained using these annotations were highly accurate (mean AUC=0.945), and the scale of annotation data provided notable improvements in image classification accuracy.

Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae), group B Streptococcus (GBS), a major cause of infection in a wide variety of diseases, have been compared in different human and animal sources. We aimed to ...compare the bacterial proteome and metabolome profiles of human and animal S. agalactiae strains to delineate biological interactions relevant to infection. With the innovative advancement in mass spectrometry, a comparative result between both strains provided a solid impression of different responses to the host. For instance, stress-related proteins (Asp23/Gls24 family envelope stress response protein and heat shock protein 70), which play a role in the survival of GBS under extreme environmental conditions or during treatment, are highly expressed in human and animal strains. One human strain contains ꞵ-lactamase (serine hydrolase) and biofilm regulatory protein (lytR), which are important virulence regulators and potential targets for the design of novel antimicrobials. Another human strain contains the aminoglycosides-resistance bifunctional AAC/APH (A0A0U2QMQ5) protein, which confers resistance to almost all clinically used aminoglycosides. Fifteen different metabolites were annotated between the two groups. L-aspartic acid, ureidopropionic acid, adenosine monophosphate, L-tryptophan, and guanosine monophosphate were annotated at higher levels in human strains. Butyric acid, fumaric acid, isoleucine, leucine, and hippuric acid have been found in both human and animal strains. Certain metabolites were uniquely expressed in animal strains, with fold changes greater than 2. For example, putrescine modulates biofilm formation. Overall, this study provides biological insights into the substantial possible bacterial response reflected in its macromolecular production, either at the proteomic or metabolomic level.
The current study was designed to investigate the protective role of diosmin against cyclophosphamide-induced premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). Female Swiss albino rats received a single ...intraperitoneal dose of cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg) followed by 8 mg/kg/day for the next 15 consecutive days either alone or in combination with oral diosmin at 50 or 100 mg/kg. Histopathological examination of ovarian tissues, hormonal assays for follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), assessment of the oxidative stress status, as well as measurement of the relative expression of miRNA-145 and its target genes vascular endothelial growth factor B
and regulator of cell cycle (
) were performed. Diosmin treatment ameliorated the levels of E2, AMH, and oxidative stress markers. Additionally, both low and high diosmin doses significantly reduced the histopathological alterations and nearly preserved the normal ovarian reserve. MiRNA-145 expression was upregulated after treatment with diosmin high dose. miRNA-145 target genes were over-expressed after both low and high diosmin administration. Based on our findings, diosmin has a dose-dependent protective effect against cyclophosphamide-induced ovarian toxicity in rats.
Most populated developing countries having water resources, like Egypt, are interested in aquaculture since it supplies around 30% of the cheap protein consumed by customers. Increasing the ...production of aquaculture, specifically fish farming, in such countries represents an essential need. One candidate water resource for freshwater fish farming in Egypt is the Nile River (1530 km long). Yet, this represents a challenging task due to the existing variations in its water quality (WQ) parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, acidity, and temperature, at different sites. Climate change and pollution negatively affect many water quality parameters. This work provides a fuzzy-based approach for modeling WQ requirements for a set of fish types and evaluates the suitability of a water site for farming them. Thus, it greatly helps managing and planning fish farming in a set of water sites. It benefits from the flexibility of fuzzy logic to model the farming requirements of each fish type. Consequently, it evaluates and clusters the water sites with respect to their degrees of suitability for farming various fish types. The illustrative case study considers 27 freshwater sites spread along the Nile River and 17 freshwater fish types. The result incorporates a set of suitable clusters and a set of unsuitable ones for farming each fish type. It greatly helps managing and planning fish farming, to maximize the overall productivity and prevent probable catastrophic damage. In addition, it shows how to enhance each unsuitable site. We believe that eliminating the causes of pollution in the polluted freshwater sites along a water source could cause a significant boom in the cultivation of multiple freshwater fish types.
The current fact of increasing rates of cesarean deliveries is a catastrophe. Recurrent cesareans result in intraperitoneal adhesions that would lead to maternal morbidity during delivery. Great ...efforts are directed towards the prediction of intraperitoneal adhesions to provide the best care for laboring women. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the role of abdominal striae and cesarean scar characters in the prediction of intraperitoneal adhesions.
This was a case- control study conducted in the emergency ward of the obstetrics and gynecology department of a tertiary hospital from June to December 2019. The study was carried on patients admitted to the ward fulfilling particular inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study included two groups, group one was assessed for the presence of striae, and the degree of intraperitoneal adhesions was evaluated during the current cesarean section. Group two included patients without evidence of abdominal striae. They were evaluated for the severity of adhesions also after evaluation of the previous scar. Evaluation of the striae was done using Davey's scoring system. The scar was assessed using the Vancouver Scar Scale. The modified Nair's scoring system was used to evaluate intraperitoneal adhesions.
The study group included 203 women, while the control group included 205 women. There were significant differences in the demographic characters of the recruited patients (p-value 0.001 for almost all variables). The mean Davey score in those with mild, moderate, and severe striae was 1.82 ± 0.39, 3.57 ± 0.5, and 6.73 ± 0.94, respectively (p-value < 0.001). Higher scores for the parameters of the Vancouver scale were present in patients with severe striae (1.69 ± 1.01, 1.73 ± 0.57, 2.67 ± 1.23, and 1.35 ± 1.06 for scar vascularity, pigmentation, pliability, and height respectively with a p-value of < 0.001 each). Thick intraperitoneal adhesions were noted significantly in women with severe striae 21 (43.75%), p-value < 0.001). The Davey's and Vancouver scores showed highly significant predictive performance in the prediction of intraperitoneal adhesions (p-value < 0.001).
Abdominal striae and cesarean scar were significant predictors for intraperitoneal adhesions.
In this paper, the gap waveguide technology is examined for packaging liquid crystal (LC) in tunable microwave devices. For this purpose, a line based passive phase shifter is designed and ...implemented in a ridge gap waveguide (RGW) topology and filled with LC serving as functional material. The inherent direct current (DC) decoupling property of gap waveguides is used to utilize the waveguide surroundings as biasing electrodes for tuning the LC. The bed of nails structure of the RGW exhibits an E-field suppression of 76 dB in simulation, forming a completely shielded device. The phase shifter shows a maximum figure of merit (FoM) of 70 °/dB from 20 GHz to 30 GHz with a differential phase shift of 387° at 25 GHz. The insertion loss ranges from 3.5 dB to 5.5 dB depending on the applied biasing voltage of 0 V to 60 V.
Welding of dissimilar aluminum alloys has been widely used in many industrial applications. However, the selection of filler type still attracts significant interest in the welding research area. The ...present work concerns the effect of filler metal on the microstructure and corrosion of weld joints of dissimilar aluminum alloys. AA 5083 and AA 6082 alloys were welded by tungsten inert gas welding (GTAW) using filler metals ER 4043 and ER 5356. The microstructure observations and the corrosion test of the weld joints were carried out. Solidification cracks were observed in the ER 4043 weld zone, whereas defect-free joints were obtained using a mix filler welding process. A galvanic corrosion was observed on the boundary between the filler rod ER 4043 weld zone and AA 5083 base alloy. From the corrosion standpoint of view, the using of ER 4043 electrodes is not preferred for welding 5000 series aluminum alloys, whereas ER 5356 filler electrode is more favorable than ER 4043 filler electrode either for dissimilar welding of AA 5083 and AA 6082 alloys or individual welding of both aluminum alloys. No galvanic corrosion is observed between ER 4043 fillers and AA 6082 base alloy.
Background Emergency cholecystectomy is the mainstay in treating acute cholecystitis (AC). In actual practice, perioperative prophylactic antibiotics are used to prevent postoperative infectious ...complications (PIC), but their effectiveness lacks evidence. We aim to investigate the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotics in emergency cholecystectomy. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science (WOS), and Scopus up to June 14, 2023. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that involved patients diagnosed with mild to moderate AC according to Tokyo guidelines who were undergoing emergency cholecystectomy and were administered preoperative and/or postoperative antibiotics as an intervention group and compared to a placebo group. For dichotomous data, we applied the risk ratio (RR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI), while for continuous data, we used the mean difference (MD) and 95% CI. Results We included seven RCTs encompassing a collective sample size of 1747 patients. Our analysis showed no significant differences regarding total PIC (RR = 0.84 with 95% CI (0.63, 1.12), P = 0.23), surgical site infection (RR = 0.79 with 95% CI (0.56, 1.12), P = 0.19), distant infections (RR = 1.01 with 95% CI (0.55, 1.88), P = 0.97), non-infectious complications (RR = 0.84 with 95% CI (0.64, 1.11), P = 0.22), mortality (RR = 0.34 with 95% CI (0.04, 3.23), P = 0.35), and readmission (RR = 0.69 with 95% CI (0.43, 1.11), P = 0.13). Conclusion Perioperative antibiotics in patients with mild to moderate acute cholecystitis did not show a significant reduction of postoperative infectious complications after emergency cholecystectomy. The main objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the safety and effectiveness of VivaSight double-lumen tubes (VS-DLTs) in one-lung ventilation (OLV) compared to ...conventional DLTs (c-DLTs). The study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis statement's guidelines. From the database's inception to December 2022, we searched seven different databases. We included 364 patients from six randomized controlled trials who were scheduled to undergo surgery requiring OLV. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was utilized to determine the risk of bias. The odds ratio (OR) was estimated for categorical variables, while the mean difference was calculated for continuous variables. Patients were randomly assigned to the VS-DLT or c-DLT group. The results revealed that patients in the c-DLT group have longer intubation time than the VS-DLT patients (mean difference MD = -90.01; 95% confidence interval CI, -161.33 to -18.69; P = 0.01). Significantly, more secretions were present in the VS-DLT group than in the c-DLT group (OR = 4.24; CI, 1.96 to 9.13; P = 0.0002). Also, the fiberoptic bronchoscope was used more frequently in the c-DLT group compared to the VS-DLT group (OR = 0.01 0.00, 0.07; P < 0.00001). We found that VS-DLT was safe as the pooled analysis showed no significant difference according to side effects such as hoarseness and sore throat. The other outcomes, such as dislodgement, the clearance of secretions, and the quality of lung deflation (excellent), were non-significant between the two groups.
