Oral mucoceles are a common and nagging problem. They are proposed to be a result of damage to the minor salivary gland structure, resulting in retention or extravasation of saliva which leads to ...these cystic lesions. The lesions may often resolve spontaneously but frequently recur, or even epithelialize over long periods of time. This study reports the results of surgical management of oral mucocele by marsupialization. Even though, a complete surgical removal is considered the treatment of choice for oral mucocele, it has associated disadvantages including a longer recovery period and potential for ductal damage, which can lead to scarring, recurrence, and development of further satellite lesions. As the study shows, marsupialization is a simple surgery which ensures faster healing, minimizes postoperative complications, and is associated with a minimal risk of recurrence or development of new lesions. Owing to the satisfactory response to marsupialization, it may be considered as first line therapy in the management of oral mucoceles.
Summary
Onychomycosis (OM) is a fungal infection of the nail plate or nail bed which is highly prevalent in the general population and also responsible for significant morbidity. The condition needs ...to be treated in view of the physical and emotional handicap it produces. The peculiarities of the nail apparatus in health and disease lead to difficulties in being able to successfully treat this condition. Hence, the very same antifungals which produce high cure rates in skin infections are rendered less efficacious in nail disease. Low cure rates and high relapse rates even with highly efficacious antifungals have lead to an increasing interest in exploring newer treatment options which can ensure drug penetration, drug persistence, mycological cure and effective prevention of relapse. The current review aims to summarize our current status of knowledge about the treatment options for OM. It also summarizes the newer areas of research especially with respect to devices related therapies; physical measures to enhance penetration through nail; and development and evaluation of synergistic combinations.

Retronychia is an uncommon type of ingrown nail characterized by ingrowing of the proximal nail plate into the proximal nail fold (PNF), inciting cycles of inflammation. The condition can be ...symptomatic due to swelling and inflammation of the PNF, but most often it is noticed because of a proximal thickening of the nail plate and the failure of nail to grow distally. It usually affects the great toenails of young females, commonly due to recurrent trauma and footwear-related issues. This condition is difficult to recognize in the initial stages and often requires surgical management when the nail plate becomes significantly impacted. We present a case of retronychia in a 24-year-old lady, who was treated surgically. The report serves to highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic approach in such cases.
Abstract
Trichostasis spinulosa is a disorder of hair follicles characterized by the retention of vellus telogen club hair, leading to the formation of comedo-like lesions. It usually presents over ...the face and is frequently asymptomatic. We report a 53-year-old female who presented with multiple itchy, discrete, bluish-black, 2–3 mm comedo-like follicular papules and pustules on her breast and lower abdomen for the past 2 years.
In-vivo
dermoscopy showed keratotic plugs with a tuft of hair. Extraction dermoscopy yielded a cystic structure filled with keratin and multiple vellus telogen club hairs. Histology showed a cyst lined by squamous epithelium containing abundant laminated keratinous debris and a vellus hair shaft. Truncal or breast involvement, as seen in the present case, is relatively rare, and can be pruritic, causing significant morbidity due to itching and secondary bacterial infections. An evaluation of 62 patients with tinea of glabrous skin (Group A (cases)-31 steroid modified and Group B (controls)-31 treatment naïve) was done. Clinical, dermoscopic, and mycological evaluations were done for both groups at baseline, 2, and 4 weeks of terbinafine therapy. Clinical severity (Clinical Assessment Severity Score (CASS) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)) and frequency of various dermoscopic changes were compared at 0 and 4 weeks between cases and controls, using unpaired Student's
-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Baseline dermoscopic features for both groups were significantly different with respect to frequency of broken hair, bent hair, micropustules and Morse code hair. Earliest feature to resolve with treatment was micropustules at 2 weeks. Significant reduction in frequency of morphologically altered hair was evident at 4 weeks. Telangiectasia, dotted vessels, I-hair, and broken hair persisted for a longer period of time. Terbinafine for 4 weeks was an effective treatment, producing complete cure in 73% of cases and 93% of controls. Persistent dermoscopic changes at 2 weeks were found to be associated with treatment failure at 4 weeks, highlighting the role of dermoscopy in identifying patients requiring prolonged treatment.
Dermoscopy can be used as a diagnostic and monitoring tool for tinea of glabrous skin.
