In the 2020s we are faced with a problem of an ageing society. Not only do we see it and struggle to provide care for the elderly, but we also focus on constantly maintaining a good form related to ...our well-being as well as physical, mental and social functioning. The publications used in this review were sourced from the PubMed database and from Google Scholar. The paper uses articles published in English which are not older than 5 years. Analysis of the latest literature has shown that there is evidence that modifiable factors have a positive effect on our well-being and health. The best effect can be achieved by combining positive actions in the field of diet, supplementation, moderate but systematic physical activity, and adding the right amount of sleep per day.
Non-infectious complications such as post-extraction pain, trismus, and swelling are extremely common after impacted wisdom tooth removal. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of using ...kinesio tape on the level of the postoperative swelling of soft tissues, trismus, and pain in patients undergoing the surgical extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar. One hundred patients undergoing the surgical extraction of a lower wisdom tooth were randomly divided into two groups: a study group with kinesio taping (KT) (
= 50) and a control group without kinesio taping (NKT) (
= 50). The surgical procedure was performed according to the same repeatable scheme. Kinesio tape was applied immediately after surgery in the KT group. In both groups, measurements of swelling, trismus, and pain were performed before the surgery and on the third and seventh postprocedural days. Kinesio tape had a significant effect on the decrease in facial swelling on the third day after surgery and a decrease in trismus and pain severity levels on the third and seventh days after surgery. The kinesio tape method is non-invasive, continuously active throughout the entire application period, and requires no additional patient appointments. KT application is an effective method for reducing postoperative edema, pain, and trismus after impacted mandibular wisdom teeth surgery.
There are many randomized clinical trials suggesting a positive effect of kinesiotaping on postoperative swelling. In dentistry, however, the use of kinesiotaping still seems to be innovative, since ...not many articles on kinesiotaping within the craniofacial area have been published. This study aimed to systematically review and synthesize available controlled trials examining the use of kinesiotaping to reduce morbidity after third molar extraction. Literature searches for free text and MeSH terms were performed using five search engines, and used to find studies which focused on kinesiotaping as a form of rehabilitation after third molar extraction. The keywords used in the search were: "(("molar, third"MeSH Terms OR ("molar"All Fields AND "third"All Fields) OR "third molar"All Fields OR ("third"All Fields AND "molar"All Fields)) AND extraction All Fields) AND "kinesiology"All Fields". For the assessment of the risk of bias, the Jadad and Maastricht scales were applied. The search strategy identified 317 potential articles. After analysis, 10 papers were included in the final evaluation. Despite the fact that most of the included articles adhered to methodological standards, the fact that there are only a few of them points to a further need for scientific development of physiotherapy in this regard. Kinesiology taping is useful against post-operative morbidity of the third molar extraction site. The present studies show a low level of the risk of bias, but they are limited in number; therefore, it seems that more research is needed.
Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), which refers to alcohol consumption by pregnant women, is associated with the risk of numerous severe complications during fetal development. The State Agency for ...Alcohol Problem Solving reports that the incidence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in Poland’s general population is over 1.7%, and the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is estimated at more than 0.5%. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of alcohol exposure and focused on the pattern of alcohol intoxication exhibited by the mother during pregnancy and other environmental factors of the maternal environment contributing to the development of FASD. The study covered 554 subjects, including 251 mothers and 303 children (213 girls and 90 boys). The mother’s drinking problem was determined based on the information obtained from the case history. All children qualified for the study fulfilled the h-PAE (high alcohol exposure) criteria during their fetal life. The clinical diagnosis of FAS and pFAS (occurrence of morphological symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome) was made using a four-digit diagnostic questionnaire validated in the Polish version of the Washington Questionnaire for the assessment of the spectrum of alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders or alcohol-related cognitive impairment (ARND/C). Statistical analysis of the obtained research results was developed using statistical software–STATISTICA PL, version 13.1 (StatSoft, Inc., Szczecin, Poland 2016, STATISTICA–data analysis software system, version 13.1). The most destructive drinking behaviors are compulsive intoxication (BD, binge drinking) during the first 6 weeks of pregnancy and chronic addiction throughout its duration (CHD, chronic drinking). Chronic alcohol intoxication (CHD) leads to a poorer nutritional status in mothers, which is reflected in a lower body mass index (BMI) (<18 kg/m2).

The main reason for pharmacological treatment ...of FASD children is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and methylphenidate (MPH) is the drug of choice. The aim of the study was to assess whether children born of hPAE with ADHD, with or without morphological FASD, differ in terms of catechol-O-methyltransferase (
) and dopamine receptor D2 (
) gene polymorphisms, and if genetic predisposition affects response and safety of MPH treatment. The polymorphisms of
(rs4680) and
(rs1076560, rs1800497) were analyzed in DNA samples. A borderline significance was found for the correlation between MPH side effects and the G allele of
(rs4680) (
= 0.04994) in all ADHD children. No effect of
(rs4680) and
(rs1076560, rs1800497) polymorphisms and the treatment efficacy was observed. The analyzed
and
gene polymorphisms seem to play no role in MPH efficacy in ADHD children with hPAE, while low-activity
(Met158) variant carriers may be more intolerant to MPH. The MPH treatment is effective in ADHD independent of FASD, although the ADHD-FASD variant requires higher doses to be successful. These results may help in optimization and individualization in child psychiatry.
Introduction: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most common ligament injuries of the knee and often require reconstruction. The etiology of the molecular mechanisms of rupture ...of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is poorly understood, and many external and internal factors have been associated with it, including genetics. This study aimed to investigate the association of sequence variants in the ELN and FMOD candidate genes with ACL ruptures based on the essential biological functions of these two proteoglycan-encoding genes in maintaining the structural integrity of tissues and regulating fibrillogenesis. Material and Methods: The partici-pants consisted of 229 (164 male and 65 female) individuals with a surgically diagnosed ACL rup-ture (ACLR) who qualified for ligament reconstruction and 192 (107 male and 85 female) healthy participants with no history of ACL injury (CON group). All 229 participants in the ACLR group sustained injuries through non-contact mechanisms. The chi-square tests were used for association analysis of ELN rs2071307 and FMOD rs7543148 between the anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACLR) group and the control (CON) group. Results: It follows from the study that the tested group of athletes shows a statistically significantly more frequent AA genotype in the ELN rs2071307 gene polymorphism than the control group. However, looking at gender, one can observe that these are significantly more frequent. In the polymorphism of the FMOD rs7543148 gene, a significantly rarer TT genotype was observed in the study group compared to the control group and, similarly to the previous polymorphism, the TT genotype was significantly less frequent in the group of males com-pared to the control group. Conclusions: Genetic research in sports, especially concerning injuries connected to characteristic polymorphic variants of selected genes, is justified, particularly as regards gender-homogenous groups.
Background: The issue of scientific measurement of somatotypes of athletes with physical disabilities and the type of physical activity undertaken by them is poorly documented in the literature. The ...aim of the study is to determine what type of body composition is characteristic of athletes with physical disabilities, engaging in various types of physical activity, such as swimming, sitting volleyball and weight lifting. Material and methods: Sixty men, aged 20-30, were qualified for the study. Each study participant had a motor dysfunction and was in intellectual norm. For the research protocol, Sheldon’s typology in Heath and Carter modification was used. Results: The group of men with physical disabilities practicing swimming regularly had the advantage of endomorphic and mesomorphic components. A similar distribution of components in the somatotype was demonstrated by men playing sitting volleyball. Men lifting weights clearly showed the dominance of the mesomorphic component and, to a small extent, the share of the ectomorphic and endomorphic components. Conclusions: A properly calculated somatotype allows disabled athletes to learn about body composition components and to train and develop more effectively in a particular physical activity.
Introduction. A stroke is considered a medical emergency. It is an occurrence of brain disorders lasting more than 24 hours. Survivors are likely to be permanently disabled in a variety of ways. It ...is for this reason that numerous measures have been taken to reduce the mortality and degree of disability of these patients. Rehabilitation is an integral and extremely important part of the treatment of people who suffered a stroke – both ischemic and hemorrhagic. It should be started as soon as possible, because how quickly and to what extent the patient recovers depends on it. Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze and evaluate the deficit of self-care and self-nursing of 100 post-stroke patients at the Department of Neurology with the Stroke Sub-department of the University Hospital in Zielona Góra. Material and methods. A self-study questionnaire was used prior to the study. Results. Among the subjects of the study, ischemic stroke was the most common (84%). Almost half of the subjects had a physical disability that limited their freedom of movement to a minor degree (47%). A significant degree of limitation was reported by 32% of the subjects. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in the frequency of moderate pain reported by individuals after physical rehabilitation that restored their mobility – p<0.000001. The strength of the observed effect was moderate (Cramer’s V = 0.43, 95% CI (0.27; 0.56)). Keywords: disability, stroke, self-care, rehabilitation.
All children born and temporarily residing in Poland are required to be vaccinated. Parents have a choice between free vaccines, which are funded by the state budget, and recommended multivalent ...vaccines for which they have to pay. The number of parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated remains relatively low. Unfortunately, the percentage of unvaccinated children increases every year, despite the best efforts of healthcare professionals and comprehensive public health education. It can be assumed that the reason for the increasing number of refusals to vaccinate children is the lack of knowledge of vaccination demonstrated by their parents and guardians. The study was conducted in 2022 using a proprietary, anonymous survey of 138 parents who had their children vaccinated. Introduction. Childbirth and its course have a significant impact on a woman’s mental functioning during the postpartum period and motherhood. The mother’s mental state affects not only her child’s ...life and health, but also the functioning of the entire family. The literature distinguishes several types of mental disorders that occur in the postpartum period, including postpartum depression. Aim. This study aims to determine the incidence of mood disorders in women up to 6 months postpartum. Material and methods. The research was carried out using a standardized questionnaire – the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) – designed to determine the severity of mood disorders in the postpartum period in women at the University Hospital in Zielona Góra. The survey was conducted among 100 women aged from 17 to 43. Results. The results of the analysis showed that in women who noticed mood disorders during pregnancy (n=11, i.e. 11% of the total and n=10, i.e. 10% of the total), there is a possibility of postpartum depressive disorders (score ≥12 points on the ESDP scale) (p=0.0006). Respondents who answered “Definitely yes”, accounted for 42.31% of women who scored ≥12 points on the ESDP scale, and those who answered “Rather yes”, accounted for 38.46%. Conclusion. Respondents, whose pregnancy ended in a physiological delivery (forces of nature), feel more satisfied with childbirth than the other respondents (n=29 – definitely yes; n=24 – rather yes). In women whose pregnancy ended in caesarean section, the level of dissatisfaction with childbirth (n=9 – rather not) or less satisfaction (n=3 – definitely not) was higher than in the other women (p=0.0124).
