Field studies were conducted during 1999 and 2000 to compare weed control after fall and early-preplant (EPP) herbicide applications in no-till soybean. Three residual treatments (chlorimuron plus ...metribuzin, chlorimuron plus sulfentrazone, and metribuzin) were applied at two rates and timings (fall and 30 d EPP) either alone or in combination with glyphosate and 2,4-D. The addition of glyphosate and 2,4-D to fall-applied residual herbicides significantly increased control of common chickweed, annual bluegrass, cressleaf groundsel, and shepherd's-purse. The effect of application rate on weed control was species dependent. Fall-applied residual herbicides were comparable with EPP treatments with respect to winter annual weed control; however, at planting control of summer annual weed species with fall treatments was less consistent compared with EPP residual herbicides.
Using practicing sales managers as subjects, the results indicate that personal characteristics of gender may be used in making disciplinary judgments following episodes of a particular type of ...unacceptable work behavior, an unethical selling act. As hypothesized, saleswomen were disciplined less severely while salesmen were disciplined more severely. However, female sales managers did not administer discriminatory discipline. The discipline administered by female sales managers to salesmen and to saleswomen was quite uniform. Furthermore, the discipline administered by female sales managers to salesmen and saleswomen was quite close to the discipline administered by male sales managers to salesmen. The only outlying level of discipline administered in the study was more leniency shown by male sales managers toward saleswomen.
We have measured parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton scattering over the range of momentum transfers 0.12 < Q{sup 2} < 1.0 GeV{sup 2}. These asymmetries, arising from interference ...of the electromagnetic and neutral weak interactions, are sensitive to strange quark contributions to the currents of the proton. The measurements were made at JLab using a toroidal spectrometer to detect the recoiling protons from a liquid hydrogen target. The results indicate non-zero, Q{sup 2} dependent, strange quark contributions and provide new information beyond that obtained in previous experiments.
The lifetimes of the excited states of {sup 55}Mn between 1.5 and 2.7 MeV were measured using nuclear resonance fluorescence. The absolute lifetimes of the excited levels were determined from ...simultaneous measurements of manganese and aluminum. In this approach, the precisely known aluminum state serves as a means to normalize the results. Our findings differ from the evaluated level lifetimes in the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF), but agree with earlier nuclear resonance fluorescence measurements.
Tabulated results are given from studies on the concentrations of mercury in bottom deposits in the Reitvlei reservoir, South Africa . The concentrations found ranged from 01 to 05 g per g of dry ...sediment, the highest concentrations occurring in the main channel flowing from the catchment area. There was little variation of concentration with depth of sediment, indicating a constant level of mercury flowing into the impoundment over the period of build-up of the sediment. (IML)
Science 290 (2000) 2117 The violation of mirror symmetry in the weak force provides a powerful tool
to study the internal structure of the proton. Experimental results have been
obtained that address ...the role of strange quarks in generating nuclear
magnetism. The measurement reported here provides an unambiguous constraint on
strange quark contributions to the proton's magnetic moment through the
electron-proton weak interaction. We also report evidence for the existence of
a parity-violating electromagnetic effect known as the anapole moment of the
proton. The proton's anapole moment is not yet well understood theoretically,
but it could have important implications for precision weak interaction studies
in atomic systems such as cesium.
