In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod were successfully prepared at different growth times (15, 30 and 60 min) using the microwave irradiation method. The ZnO nanorods were simply synthesized at a ...low temperature (90 °C) with low power microwave assisted heating (about 100 W) and a subsequent ageing process. The synthesized nanorod were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis). The FESEM images showed nanorods with diameter ranging between 50 and 150 nm, and length of 150–550 nm. The XRD results indicate that ZnO nanorods of different time of growth exhibits pure wurtzite structure with lattice parameters of 3.2568 and 5.2125 Å. UV–Vis characterization showed that energy gap decreases with increase in time. The result also shows that growth of ZnO at 60 min produces an energy band gap of 3.15 eV. In general, the results of the study confirm that the microwave irradiation method is a promising low temperature, cheap and fast method for the production of ZnO nanostructures.

Delays in diagnosis of acidosis have caused serious injury to the fetus, especially for the brain and the heart. This paper reviews the new technique in diagnosis of acidosis non-invasively. Magnetic Induction Spectroscopy (MIS) has been proposed to be a new device for acidosis detection in recent years. This paper explains the basic principle of MIS and outlines the design specifications and design considerations for a MIS pH probe. It is expected that readers will gain a basic understanding of the development of a MIS pH probe from this review.
Background Placenta accreta is known to be associated with significant maternal morbidity and mortality--primarily due to intractable bleeding during abortion or delivery at any level of gestation. ...The complications could be reduced if placenta accreta is suspected in a patient with a history of previous cesarean delivery and the gestational sac/placenta is located at the lower part of the uterus. Then, a proper management plan can be instituted, and complications can be reduced. The diagnosis of placenta accreta in the first trimester of pregnancy is considered uncommon. Case presentation A 34-year-old Malay, gravida 4, para 3, rhesus-negative woman was referred from a private hospital at 13 weeks owing to accreta suspicion for further management. She has a history of three previous lower-segment cesarean sections. She also had per vaginal bleeding in the early first trimester, which is considered to indicate threatened miscarriage. Transabdominal ultrasound revealed features consistent with placenta accreta spectrum. She was counseled for open laparotomy and hysterectomy because of potential major complication if she continued with the pregnancy. Histopathological examination revealed placenta increta. Conclusion A high index of suspicion of placenta previa accreta must be in practice in a patient with a history of previous cesarean deliveries and low-lying placenta upon ultrasound examination during early gestation. The medical notes of 209 IVF cycles receiving GnRH agonist and hCG as ovulation trigger over 18 months were reviewed in this retrospective study. The number and quality of mature oocytes, the number and quality of embryos, pregnancy rates, and outcomes were compared using Independent T-test or One-way ANOVA for normal distribution. The Mann-Whitney test or Kruskal-Wallis test was used for not normally distributed. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
The cycle outcomes of 107 GnRH agonist-trigger and 102 hCG-trigger were compared. The MII oocytes retrieved and 2PN count was significantly higher in the GnRH agonist trigger group (p<0.001). Clinical pregnancy rate and ongoing pregnancy were higher in the GnRH agonist trigger group but were not statistically significant. The GnRH agonist trigger group was associated with low OHSS than the hCG trigger group (n=2(1.9%) and n=12(11.8%) respectively, p=0.004).
GnRH agonist trigger is an option as a final maturation trigger in high-responder women undergoing IVF or ICSI cycles.
The laboratory plays a significant role in public health surveillance, outbreak investigation and infection prevention and control strategies. Microbiology laboratories are moving towards ...incorporating molecular biology techniques for the surveillance and identification of pathogens causing infectious diseases as well as the genotypic characterisation of these organisms. These methods are accurate, rapid, reliable, and provide a wealth of information that are not available using conventional phenotypic methods. However, establishing such a laboratory can be challenging in developing countries due to poor infrastructure, the lack of funding and the required expertise. This manuscript discusses the essential issues that need to be addressed when establishing a molecular microbiology laboratory and the usefulness of molecular techniques in public health surveillance and outbreaks in developing countries. Molecular data on South African findings obtained from surveillance and outbreak studies are also presented in this manuscript.
Müllerian duct anomaly is a rare condition. Many cases remain unidentified, especially if asymptomatic. Thus, it is difficult to determine the actual incidence. Müllerian duct anomaly is associated ...with a wide range of gynecological and obstetric complications, namely infertility, endometriosis, urinary tract anomalies, and preterm delivery. Furthermore, congenital anomalies in pregnant mothers have a high risk of being genetically transmitted to their offspring.
We report a case of a patient with unsuspected müllerian duct anomaly in a term pregnancy. A 33-year-old Malay woman with previously uninvestigated involuntary primary infertility for 4 years presented with acute right pyelonephritis in labor at 38 weeks of gestation. She has had multiple congenital anomalies since birth and had undergone numerous surgeries during childhood. Her range of congenital defects included hydrocephalus, for which she was put on a ventriculoperitoneal shunt; imperforated anus; and tracheoesophageal fistula with a history of multiples surgeries. In addition, she had a shorter right lower limb length with limping gait. Her physical examination revealed a transverse scar at the right hypochondrium and multiple scars at the posterior thoracic region, levels T10-T12. Abdominal palpation revealed a term size uterus that was deviated to the left, with a singleton fetus in a nonengaged cephalic presentation. The cervical os was closed, but stricture bands were present on the vagina from the upper third until the fornices posteriorly. She also had multiple rectal prolapses and strictures over the rectum due to previous anorectoplasty. An emergency cesarean delivery was performed in view of the history of anorectoplasty, vaginal stricture, and infertility. Intraoperative findings showed a left unicornuate uterus with a communicating right rudimentary horn.
Most cases of müllerian duct anomaly remain undiagnosed due to the lack of clinical suspicion and the absence of pathognomonic clinical and radiological characteristics. Because it is associated with a wide range of gynecological and obstetric complications, it is vital for healthcare providers to be aware of its existence and the role of antenatal radiological investigations in its diagnosis. The presence of multiple congenital abnormalities and a history of infertility in a pregnant woman should warrant the exclusion of müllerian duct anomalies from the beginning. Early detection of müllerian duct anomalies can facilitate an appropriate delivery plan and improve the general obstetric outcome.

BackgroundEctopic pregnancy was recorded as the fourth principal cause of maternal death in Malaysia in 2019. Early diagnosis and use of methotrexate treatment proved to be safe and effective ...alternatives to surgical treatment. This study investigates the success rate of methotrexate treatment for ectopic pregnancy in a tertiary hospital in Malaysia.MethodsThis was a retrospective review of 73 patients with ectopic pregnancies treated with methotrexate according to a single-dose protocol from January 2009 until November 2019. The diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was made using a combination of transvaginal scan and serial serum β-hCG levels. Their clinical and demographic data were reviewed. Serum β-hCG levels were measured at pre- and post-treatment to determine the rate of successful resolution.ResultsThe overall success rate was 87.7% (64/73 patients) with methotrexate treatment. Fifty-six patients (76.7%) were successfully treated with a single dose of methotrexate, and eight patients (11.0%) required a second dose of methotrexate. There was no relation between socio-demographic, pre-treatment β-hCG levels, ectopic mass size, and treatment efficacy. Smaller size of ectopic pregnancy (adjusted OR=29.23; 95% CI: 2.69, 317.90; P=0.006) and absence of free fluid at the pouch of Douglas (POD) (adjusted OR=27.31; 95% CI: 2.84, 262.32; P=0.004) was found to increase the likelihood of overall treatment success. Absence of fetal cardiac activities was found to increase the likelihood of first-dose methotrexate treatment success (OR=10.20; 95% CI: 1.93, 53.79; P=0.006).ConclusionsEarly diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy may reduce morbidity and mortality. In carefully selected cases, methotrexate treatment has been proven to be cost-effective and avoided risks associated with surgery and anaesthesia.
1) Background: The emergence of multidrug resistance enterococci is a major public health concern. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of enterococci isolated ...from blood cultures over a five-year period (2016-2020) at public hospitals in South Africa. (2): Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical enterococci isolated from bloodstream infection samples at the South African public hospitals was conducted. The ESKAPE dataset from January 2016 to December 2020 was obtained from the central data warehouse (CDW) at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS). (3): Results: Following de-duplication, a total of 130,352/306,592 organisms isolated from blood cultures were identified as ESKAPE pathogens. In this study, K. pneumoniae (25%; 33,082/130,352), was the most frequently isolated pathogen from blood cultures, followed by S. aureus (23%; 29,922/130,352) and enterococci (16%; 21,339/130,352). Of the enterococci cases, about 43% (9132/21,339) of cases were from the infants aged (<1-year old) and 32% (6745/21,339) from the adult patients. No changes observed in vancomycin, teicoplanin, and linezolid susceptibility; however, E. faecium and E. faecalis blood culture isolates remained highly susceptible (>97%) to these antibiotics. (4): Conclusions: The current study revealed a significant increase of E. faecalis and E. faecium blood culture isolates as compared to the previous national ESKAPE data. Low vancomycin resistance was observed. Continuous monitoring of antimicrobial resistant Enterococcus species is warranted in South Africa.
