A study of spin effects at fragmentation of 9 GeV polarized deuterons into high momentum pions
dA → π (θ) X
was for the first time performed at Dubna polarized deuteron facility. Large
D-state ...effects were observed at fragmentation of tensor polarized deuterons into cumulative pions at non-zero emission angles.

Omalizumab, a humanized anti‐

levels following omalizumab treatment have been proposed as a marker of treatment responsiveness.
Methods
In this prospective, observational study, we assessed the utility of biomarkers of type 2 inflammation in predicting omalizumab treatment responses, as determined by the absence of asthma exacerbation during the first year of treatment. Free serum

levels were monitored for 2 years to examine their association with baseline biomarker levels and the number of exacerbations.
Results
We enrolled thirty patients who had been treated with omalizumab for at least 1 year, of whom 27 were treated for 2 years. Baseline serum periostin levels and blood eosinophil counts were significantly higher in patients without exacerbations during the first year of treatment than in patients with exacerbations. Baseline serum periostin levels, but not eosinophil counts, were negatively associated with free serum

levels after 16 or 32 weeks of treatment. Reduced free serum

levels during treatment from those at baseline were associated with reduced exacerbation numbers at 2 years. In 14 patients who continued to have exacerbations during the first year of treatment, exacerbation numbers gradually and significantly decreased over the 2‐year study period, with concurrent significant reductions in free serum

levels.
Conclusion
Baseline serum periostin levels and serum free

The ϕ-Λ(1520) interference effect in the γp→K^{+}K^{-}p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between ϕ and Λ(1520) production ...amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K^{+}K^{-} pairs are observed at forward angles but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the sqrts=2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for ϕ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange, or rescattering processes via other hyperon states.
The XLRS1 gene (HUGO-approved symbol, RS1) has been found to cause X-linked recessive retinoschisis (RS) which is characterized by splitting of the superficial layer of the retina. Recent mutation ...analysis of this gene revealed 82 different mutations in 214 patients with RS. We have now identified 10 mutations of the XLRS1 gene in 11 unrelated Japanese males with RS. Mutations found in these patients were; 1) a 20-kb deletion in exon 1 region; 2) mutations in the initiation sequence (M1V); 3) mutations in the splice donor site (IVS1 + 1 g-->a); 4) two nonsense mutations (Q88X, W163X); and 5) five missense mutations (E72K, Y89C, R182C, G109E, P203L). Four (M1V, Q88X, G109E, and W163X) of the 10 mutations were novel. The R182C mutation was identified in 2 unrelated patients. The 3 mutations found between exons 1 and 3 cause premature translation termination in the XLRS1 protein. The rest of the 7 mutations were clustered between exons 4 and 6. This region of the protein is homologous to the proteins implicated in cell-cell adhesion.
Time dependence of the kinetic energy of positronium atoms in the free space between the grains of a pressed tablet (1 g/cm
3) of ultrafine silica powder (Cab-O-Sil EH-5) has been measured with ...time-resolved angular correlation of annihilation radiation (ACAR) apparatus. The apparatus has a momentum resolution of 1.29×10
−3 mc in full width at half maximum and a time resolution of 2.7 ns in full width at half maximum. It is found that the energy of positronium falls below 0.1e V in ∼10 ns after the formation.

In this study, we developed a filter-free fluorescence image sensor that performed 2D fluorescence imaging without optical filters utilizing the wavelength-dependent absorption depth of a silicon ...substrate. This sensor changes the potential distribution in the depth direction of the silicon substrate by controlling a potential of the polysilicon gate atop the sensing area. And it can display both images of excitation light and fluorescence at the same time by measuring each light absorption current. We obtained a 2D image of quantum dot emission immobilized on the 32 × 32 filter-free fluorescence image sensor. Quantum dot emitted light with a wavelength of 620 nm by excitation light with a wavelength of 470nm. The proposed image sensor can measure and display 2D images of more than two kinds of light wavelengths at the same time by controlling the photogate voltage.
Polyhydroxybutyrate is a microbial polyester that can be produced from renewable resources, and is degraded by the enzyme polyhydroxybutyrate depolymerase. The crystal structures of ...polyhydroxybutyrate depolymerase from
Penicillium funiculosum and its S39A mutant complexed with the methyl ester of a trimer substrate of (
R)-3-hydroxybutyrate have been determined at resolutions of 1.71
Å and 1.66
Å, respectively. The enzyme is comprised of a single domain, which represents a circularly permuted variant of the α/β hydrolase fold. The catalytic residues Ser39, Asp121, and His155 are located at topologically conserved positions. The main chain amide groups of Ser40 and Cys250 form an oxyanion hole. A crevice is formed on the surface of the enzyme, to which a single polymer chain can be bound by predominantly hydrophobic interactions with several hydrophobic residues. The structure of the S39A mutant–trimeric substrate complex reveals that Trp307 is responsible for the recognition of the ester group adjacent to the scissile group. It is also revealed that the substrate-binding site includes at least three, and possibly four, subsites for binding monomer units of polyester substrates. Thirteen hydrophobic residues, which are exposed to solvent, are aligned around the mouth of the crevice, forming a putative adsorption site for the polymer surface. These residues may contribute to the sufficient binding affinity of the enzyme for PHB granules without a distinct substrate-binding domain.
