The current outbreak of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been associated with an apparent increased risk of congenital microcephaly. We describe a case of a pregnant woman and her fetus infected with ...ZIKV during the 11th gestational week. The fetal head circumference decreased from the 47th percentile to the 24th percentile between 16 and 20 weeks of gestation. ZIKV RNA was identified in maternal serum at 16 and 21 weeks of gestation. At 19 and 20 weeks of gestation, substantial brain abnormalities were detected on ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) without the presence of microcephaly or intracranial calcifications. On postmortem analysis of the fetal brain, diffuse cerebral cortical thinning, high ZIKV RNA loads, and viral particles were detected, and ZIKV was subsequently isolated.

Technologies based on cavitation, produced by either ultrasound or hydrodynamic means, are part of growing literature for individual refinery unit processes. In this review, we have explained the mechanism through which these cavitation technologies intensify individual unit processes such as enhanced oil recovery, demulsification of water in oil emulsions during desalting stage, crude oil viscosity reduction, oxidative desulphurisation/demetallization, and crude oil upgrading. Apart from these refinery processes, applications of this technology are also mentioned for other potential crude oil sources such as oil shale and oil sand extraction. The relative advantages and current situation of each application/process at commercial scale is explained.
Post-abortion contraceptive use in India is low and the use of modern methods of contraception is rare, especially in rural areas. This study primarily compares contraceptive use among women whose ...abortion outcome was assessed in-clinic with women who assessed their abortion outcome at home, in a low-resource, primary health care setting. Moreover, it investigates how background characteristics and abortion service provision influences contraceptive use post-abortion.
A randomized controlled, non-inferiority, trial (RCT) compared clinic follow-up with home-assessment of abortion outcome at 2 weeks post-abortion. Additionally, contraceptive-use at 3 months post-abortion was investigated through a cross-sectional follow-up interview with a largely urban sub-sample of women from the RCT. Women seeking abortion with a gestational age of up to 9 weeks and who agreed to a 2-week follow-up were included (n = 731). Women with known contraindications to medical abortions, Hb < 85 mg/l and aged below 18 were excluded. Data were collected between April 2013 and August 2014 in six primary health-care clinics in Rajasthan. A computerised random number generator created the randomisation sequence (1:1) in blocks of six. Contraceptive use was measured at 2 weeks among women successfully followed-up (n = 623) and 3 months in the sub-set of women who were included if they were recruited at one of the urban study sites, owned a phone and agreed to a 3-month follow-up (n = 114).
There were no differences between contraceptive use and continuation between study groups at 3 months (76 % clinic follow-up, 77 % home-assessment), however women in the clinic follow-up group were most likely to adopt a contraceptive method at 2 weeks (62 ± 12 %), while women in the home-assessment group were most likely to adopt a method after next menstruation (60 ± 13 %). Fifty-two per cent of women who initiated a method at 2 weeks chose the 3-month injection or the copper intrauterine device. Only 4 % of women preferred sterilization. Caste, educational attainment, or type of residence did not influence contraceptive use.
Simplified follow-up after early medical abortion will not change women's opportunities to access contraception in a low-resource setting, if contraceptive services are provided as intra-abortion services as early as on day one. Women's postabortion contraceptive use at 3 months is unlikely to be affected by mode of followup after medical abortion, also in a low-resource setting. Clinical guidelines need to encourage intra-abortion contraception, offering the full spectrum of evidence-based methods, especially long-acting reversible methods.

Over a series of publications we have introduced a graph-theoretic description for molecular fragmentation. Here, a system is divided into a set of nodes, or vertices, that are then connected through ...edges, faces, and higher-order simplexes to represent a collection of spatially overlapping and locally interacting subsystems. Each such subsystem is treated at two levels of electronic structure theory, and the result is used to construct many-body expansions that are then embedded within an ONIOM-scheme. These expansions converge rapidly with many-body order (or graphical rank) of subsystems and have been previously used for ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations and for computing multidimensional potential energy surfaces. Specifically, in all these cases we have shown that CCSD and MP2 level AIMD trajectories and potential surfaces may be obtained at density functional theory cost. The approach has been demonstrated for gas-phase studies, for condensed phase electronic structure, and also for basis set extrapolation-based AIMD. Recently, this approach has also been used to derive new quantum-computing algorithms that enormously reduce the quantum circuit depth in a circuit-based computation of correlated electronic structure. In this publication, we introduce (a) a family of neural networks that act in parallel to represent, efficiently, the post-Hartree–Fock electronic structure energy contributions for all simplexes (fragments), and (b) a new k-means-based tessellation strategy to glean training data for high-dimensional molecular spaces and minimize the extent of training needed to construct this family of neural networks. The approach is particularly useful when coupled cluster accuracy is desired and when fragment sizes grow in order to capture nonlocal interactions accurately. The unique multidimensional k-means tessellation/clustering algorithm used to determine our training data for all fragments is shown to be extremely efficient and reduces the needed training to only 10% of data for all fragments to obtain accurate neural networks for each fragment. These fully connected dense neural networks are then used to extrapolate the potential energy surface for all molecular fragments, and these are then combined as per our graph-theoretic procedure to transfer the learning process to a full system energy for the entire AIMD trajectory at less than one-tenth the cost as compared to a regular fragmentation-based AIMD calculation.

Current psychological theory and research affirm the positive affective and motivational consequences of having personal choice. These findings have led to the popular notion that the more choice, ...the better-that the human ability to manage, and the human desire for, choice is unlimited. Findings from 3 experimental studies starkly challenge this implicit assumption that having more choices is necessarily more intrinsically motivating than having fewer. These experiments, which were conducted in both field and laboratory settings, show that people are more likely to purchase gourmet jams or chocolates or to undertake optional class essay assignments when offered a limited array of 6 choices rather than a more extensive array of 24 or 30 choices. Moreover, participants actually reported greater subsequent satisfaction with their selections and wrote better essays when their original set of options had been limited. Implications for future research are discussed.
Pipeline-based applications have become the indispensable part of life. Active monitoring and frequent inspections are critical to maintaining pipeline health. However, these tasks are highly ...expensive using the traditional maintenance systems, knowing that the pipeline systems can be largely deployed in an inaccessible and hazardous environment. In this paper, we propose a novel cost effective, scalable, customizable, and autonomous sensor-based system, called SPAMMS. It combines robot agent based technologies with sensing technologies for efficiently locating health related events and allows active and corrective monitoring and maintenance of the pipelines. SPAMMS integrates RFID systems with mobile sensors and autonomous robots. While the mobile sensor motion is based on the fluid transported by the pipeline, the fixed sensors provide event and mobile sensor location information and contribute efficiently to the study of health history of the pipeline. In addition, it permits a good tracking of the mobile sensors. Using the output of event analysis, a robot agent gets command from the controlling system, travels inside the pipelines for detailed inspection and repairing of the reported incidents (e.g., damage, leakage, or corrosion). The key innovations of SPAMMS are 3-fold: (a) the system can apply to a large variety of pipeline systems; (b) the solution provided is cost effective since it uses low cost powerless fixed sensors that can be setup while the pipeline system is operating; (c) the robot is autonomous and the localization technique allows controllable errors. The simulation experiments described in this paper along with prototyping activities demonstrate the feasibility of SPAMMS.
Machine learning has had a significant impact on multiple areas of science, technology, health, and computer and information sciences. Through the advent of quantum computing, quantum machine ...learning has developed as a new and important avenue for the study of complex learning problems. Yet there is substantial debate and uncertainty in regard to the foundations of machine learning. Here, we provide a detailed exposition of the mathematical connections between a general machine learning approach called Boltzmann machines and Feynman’s description of quantum and statistical mechanics. In Feynman’s description, quantum phenomena arise from an elegant, weighted sum over (or superposition of) paths. Our analysis shows that Boltzmann machines and neural networks have a similar mathematical structure. This allows the interpretation that the hidden layers in Boltzmann machines and neural networks are discrete versions of path elements and allows a path integral interpretation of machine learning similar to that in quantum and statistical mechanics. Since Feynman paths are a natural and elegant depiction of interference phenomena and the superposition principle germane to quantum mechanics, this analysis allows us to interpret the goal in machine learning as finding an appropriate combination of paths, and accumulated path-weights, through a network, that cumulatively captures the correct properties of an x-to-y map for a given mathematical problem. We are forced to conclude that neural networks are naturally related to Feynman path-integrals and hence may present one avenue to be considered as quantum problems. Consequently, we provide general quantum circuit models applicable to both Boltzmann machines and Feynman path integrals.
Abortion services were legalized in India in 1972, however, the access to safe abortion services is restricted, especially in rural areas. In 2002, medical abortion using mifepristone- misoprostol ...was approved for termination of pregnancy, however, its use has been limited in primary care settings.
This paper describes a service delivery intervention for women attending with unwanted pregnancies over 14 years in four primary care clinics of Rajasthan, India. Prospective data was collected to document the profile of women, method of abortion provided, contraceptive use and follow-up rates after abortion. This analysis includes data collected during August 2001-March 2015.
A total of 9076 women with unwanted pregnancies sought care from these clinics, and abortion services were provided to 70 % of these. Most abortion seekers were married, had one or more children. After 2003, the use of medical abortion increased over the years and ultimately accounted for 99 % of all abortions in 2014. About half the women returned for a follow-up visit, while the proportion using contraceptives declined from 74 % to 52 % from 2001 to 2014.
The results of our intervention indicate that integrating medical abortion into primary care settings is feasible and has a potential to improve access to safe abortion services in rural areas. Our experience can be used to guide program managers and service providers about reducing barriers and making abortion services more accessible to women.
