1.Intermittent karst lakes are important for forming wetland habitats in otherwise dry karstic landscapes. With characteristic water regimes they are unable to retain water owing to their underground ...drainage system.
2.Many Dinaric intermittent karst lakes (karst poljes) have gone through severe human disturbances in the past, aimed at fluctuating water levels in karst poljes. These measures had the goal of achieving either permanent dry agricultural land or permanent lakes for various purposes. Usually dams were built for water storage to achieve these goals.
3.This research aimed to determine the population responses of bird species that are important for conservation, to water level changes on Cerknica Lake (Slovenia), a large Dinaric intermittent karst lake, to inform effective conservation for such systems.
4.Water level and vegetation were strong drivers of waterbird diversity and abundance, based on analysis using canonical correspondence analysis and boosted regression trees.
5.Water level was critical for the conservation of important bird species. Water and reed specialists (e.g. water rail Rallus aquaticus) require management of refugia in wetlands to create mosaics of water and reedbeds. The formation of nature reserves, quiet zones and habitat restoration is needed for these specialist species. In these areas, mowing should be limited or not present at all.
6.Measures dealing with land‐use change and connectivity between habitats, for instance agri‐environmental measures, are more appropriate for rare bird species with wider niche breadths (but still narrower than generalists), e.g. skylark (Alauda arvensis) and linnet (Linaria cannabina).
Abstract
In the 11 years between 1999 and 2010, certain groups of birds inhabiting Kozjansko Regional Park underwent a moderate or large decline. Composite indices for indicator species of different ...habitat types showed an increase of generalist species (composite index 108.3), a moderate decline of forest species (composite index 76.6) and species of extensively managed orchards (composite index 76.4), and a large decline of farmland (composite index 62.8) and grassland species (composite index 8.7). Our study was based on a census using line transects with an inner and outer belt. Randomly distributed line transects with a total length of 60.8 km were surveyed using the same method both in 1999 and 2010. The decline of farmland species mirrors the population trend of this group at the national level. The study area is protected by multiple nature conservation mechanisms. It is protected as a regional park and partly as a Natura 2000 site. These mechanisms, however, do not seem to be functioning here. We believe the large decline of grassland species is a consequence of agricultural policy, which favours a decrease of extensively managed grasslands.
We report a case of ureteral injury with delayed hematuria after transvaginal oocyte retrieval. A 28-year-old infertile patient with a history of previous laparoscopic resection of endometriotic ...nodes of both sacrouterine ligaments presented with abdominal pain one day after oocyte retrieval. Four days after oocyte retrieval, she presented with massive hematuria that reappeared 6 days after oocyte retrieval. Monopolar coagulation with wire electrode and insertion of a double-J-stent was performed during operative cystoscopy. The patient recovered completely after transfusion and had no signs of renal impairment after ureteric stent removal. This is the first report of ureteral injury after oocyte retrieval presenting itself with delayed massive hematuria and no signs of renal dysfunction or urinary leakage into retroperitoneal space.
