The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) is a national surveillance system that has been assessing the health and nutritional status of Koreans since 1998. Based on the ...National Health Promotion Act, the surveys have been conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). This nationally representative cross-sectional survey includes approximately 10 000 individuals each year as a survey sample and collects information on socioeconomic status, health-related behaviours, quality of life, healthcare utilization, anthropometric measures, biochemical and clinical profiles for non-communicable diseases and dietary intakes with three component surveys: health interview, health examination and nutrition survey. The health interview and health examination are conducted by trained staff members, including physicians, medical technicians and health interviewers, at a mobile examination centre, and dieticians' visits to the homes of the study participants are followed up. KNHANES provides statistics for health-related policies in Korea, which also serve as the research infrastructure for studies on risk factors and diseases by supporting over 500 publications. KCDC has also supported researchers in Korea by providing annual workshops for data users. KCDC has published the Korea Health Statistics each year, and microdata are publicly available through the KNHANES website (http://knhanes.cdc.go.kr).
Aim
We isolated Lactobacillus brevis G‐101 from kimchi lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains, which induced IL‐10 expression in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐stimulated peritoneal macrophages. To evaluate ...the inflammatory effect of G‐101, we examined its inhibitory effect in 2,4,6‐trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)‐induced colitic mice.
Materials and Results
The colitic mice were prepared by intrarectal injection of TNBS. We measured intestinal mucosal cytokines by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay; activation of transcription factors, by immunoblotting; and macrophage polarization markers, by real‐time polymerase chain reaction. Of 200 LAB strains tested, Lact. brevis G‐101 showed most potent activity for induction of IL‐10 expression in LPS‐stimulated peritoneal macrophages. However, it significantly inhibited the expression of TNF‐α, IL‐1β and IL‐6 and the phosphorylation of IRAK1 and AKT, and activated NF‐κB and MAPKs. Treatment with TNBS caused colon shortening; increased myeloperoxidase activity; and increased IL‐1β, IL‐6 and TNF‐α expression in mice. Oral administration of Lact. brevis G‐101 significantly inhibited these activities. Lactobacillus brevis G‐101 inhibited TNBS‐induced IRAK‐1 phosphorylation and NF‐κB activation, as well as the expression of COX‐2 and iNOS. Lactobacillus brevis G‐101 inhibited the expression of M1 macrophage markers, but increased the expression of M2 macrophages in the colons of TNBS‐treated mice.
Conclusions
Lactobacillus brevis G‐101 may improve colitis by inhibiting the IRAK1/NF‐κB, MAPK and AKT pathways and by polarizing M1 macrophages to M2‐like macrophages.
Significance and Impact of the Study
These results suggest that IL‐10 expression‐inducing LAB can ameliorate colitis by inhibiting NF‐κB activation and macrophage polarization.

Background
The fate of the portal vein (PV) after pancreatoduodenectomy, especially its long‐term patency and associated complications, has received little attention. The aim of this study was to ...explore the long‐term patency rate of the PV after pancreatoduodenectomy, focusing on risk factors for PV stenosis/occlusion and associated complications.
Methods
Serial CT images of patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy for periampullary cancer between January 2000 and June 2012 in a single institution were evaluated for PV stenosis or occlusion.
Results
A total of 826 patients were enrolled. The PV stenosis/occlusion rate after pancreatoduodenectomy was 19·6 per cent and the 5‐year patency rate 69·9 per cent. The most frequent cause of PV stenosis/occlusion was local recurrence followed by postoperative change and PV thrombosis. Patients who underwent PV resection had a higher PV stenosis/occlusion rate than those who did not (51 versus 17·4 per cent; P < 0·001). The 3‐year patency rate was highest in patients with cancer of the ampulla of Vater and lowest in patients with pancreatic cancer (91·9 versus 55·5 per cent respectively; P < 0·001). Multivariable analysis showed that risk factors for PV stenosis/occlusion included primary tumour location, chemoradiotherapy and PV resection. PV stenosis or occlusion without disease recurrence was observed in 17·3 per cent of the patients. PV resection and grade B or C pancreatic fistula were independent risk factors for PV stenosis/occlusion. Among 162 patients with PV stenosis or occlusion, five (3·1 per cent) had fatal recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding.
Conclusion
PV stenosis or occlusion is common after pancreatoduodenectomy, particularly if the PV has been resected and/or chemoradiotherapy was given after surgery. Although recurrence is the most frequent cause of PV stenosis/occlusion, this complication is found in a significant proportion of patients without disease recurrence.

cfu/mouse, once a day for 3 days) in mice with CIE significantly suppressed the increase of oedema volume and thickness, as well as myeloperoxidase activity and IL-6, IL-17, NO, and prostaglandin E2 levels in the carrageenan-stimulated paw. Treatment with IM12 (1×10
cfu/mouse, once a day for 3 days) in mice with TIC significantly suppressed colon shortening, and myeloperoxidase activity and IL-6 and IL-17 levels. Treatment with IM12 in mice with CIE or TIC also suppressed the expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, as well as activation of nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-κB) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). Furthermore, IM12 significantly inhibited the expression of iNOS, and COX-2, as well as activation of NF-κB in LPS-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. The inflammatory effect of heat-inactivated IM12 was significantly different to that of live IM12 in mice with TIC, although anti-inflammatory effect of IM12 was reduced by heat treatment. Based on these findings, IM12 may attenuate inflammation by inhibiting NF-κB-STAT3 signalling pathway.
The tensile deformation and strain hardening behaviors of an equimolar CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) were investigated and compared with low and medium entropy equiatomic alloys (LEA and MEA). ...The HEA had a lower yield strength than the MEA because the addition of Mn weakens solid solution hardening in the HEA. However, deformation twinning induced the multiple stage strain hardening behavior of the HEA and enhanced strength and elongation. Using tensile-interrupted electron backscatter diffraction analysis, geometrically necessary dislocations were observed as plume-shaped features in grain interior, and a considerable texture was characterized, which is typical of face centered cubic metals. Moreover, the relationship between favorably oriented grains and twinning in the HEA bore a clear resemblance to the same tendency in TWIP steels. The thickness of the twin bundles was less than 100nm. A high density of stacking defects was found in the nanotwins. Nano twinning and stacking faults were found to contribute to the remarkable mechanical properties. Deformation induced twinning not only demonstrated the dynamic Hall-Petch effect but also changed dislocation cell substructures into microband structures.
Summary
Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a causative agent of respiratory and enteric diseases in cattle and calves. BCoV infection was also evident in captive wild ruminants. Recently, water deer are ...recognized as the most common wildlife to approach farmhouses and livestock barns in Korea. Therefore, we investigated 77 nasal swab samples from non‐captive wild water deer (Hydropotes inermis) between November 2016 and September 2017 and identified three samples positive for coronavirus, indicating potential for respiratory shedding. The full genomic sequences of the water deer coronavirus were closely related to BCoV (>98%). Therefore, effective biosecurity system in bovine farms would be necessary to prevent contact between farm ruminants and free‐ranging wild water deer.
Pig islets are an alternative source for islet transplantation to treat type 1 diabetes (T1D), but reproducible curative potential in the pig‐to‐nonhuman primate (NHP) model has not been ...demonstrated. Here, we report that pig islet grafts survived and maintained normoglycemia for >6 months in four of five consecutive immunosuppressed NHPs. Pig islets were isolated from designated pathogen‐free (DPF) miniature pigs and infused intraportally into streptozotocin‐induced diabetic rhesus monkeys under pretreatment with cobra venom factor (CVF), anti‐thymocyte globulin (ATG) induction and maintenance with anti‐CD154 monoclonal antibody and low‐dose sirolimus. Ex vivo expanded autologous regulatory T cells were adoptively transferred in three recipients. Blood glucose levels were promptly normalized in all five monkeys and normoglycemia (90–110 mg/dL) was maintained for >6 months in four cases, the longest currently up to 603 days. Intravenous glucose tolerance tests during the follow‐up period showed excellent glucose disposal capacity and porcine C‐peptide responses. Adoptive transfer of autologous regulatory T cells was likely to be associated with more stable and durable normoglycemia. Importantly, the recipients showed no serious adverse effects. Taken together, our results confirm the clinical feasibility of pig islet transplantation to treat T1D patients without the need for excessive immunosuppressive therapy.

), the observed CDW peaks reveal two distinct regions in the material: a majority phase with short-range CDW coexisting with superconductivity, and a minority phase with longer-range CDW coexisting with static spin density wave (SDW). With increasing magnetic field, the CDW first grows smoothly in a manner similar to the SDW. However, at high fields we discover a sudden increase in the CDW amplitude upon entering the vortex-liquid state.
