Issue Title: Isolated Neutron Stars: from the Surface to the Interior We present X-ray data of the middle-aged radio pulsar PSR B0355+54. The XMM-Newton and Chandra observations show not only ...emission from the pulsar itself, but also compact diffuse emission extending 50'' in the opposite direction to the pulsar's proper motion. Our analysis also indicates the presence of fainter diffuse emission extending 5' from the point source. The morphology of the diffuse component is similar to the ram-pressure confined pulsar wind nebulae detected for other sources. We find that the compact diffuse component is well-fitted with a power-law, with an index that is consistent with the values found for other pulsar wind nebulae. The core emission from the pulsar can be characterized with a thermal plus power-law fit, with the thermal emission most likely originating in a hot polar cap. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
We report on new broad band spectral and temporal observations of the magnetar 1E 2259+586, which is located in the supernova remnant CTB 109. Our data were obtained simultaneously with the Nuclear ...Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Swift, and cover the energy range from 0.5-79 keV. We present pulse profiles in various energy bands and compare them to previous RXTE results. The NuSTAR data show pulsations above 20 keV for the first time and we report evidence that one of the pulses in the double-peaked pulse profile shifts position with energy. The pulsed fraction of the magnetar is shown to increase strongly with energy. Our spectral analysis reveals that the soft X-ray spectrum is well characterized by an absorbed double blackbody or blackbody plus power-law model in agreement with previous reports. Our new hard X-ray data, however, suggest that an additional component, such as a power law, is needed to describe the NuSTAR and Swift spectrum. We also fit the data with the recently developed coronal outflow model by Beloborodov for hard X-ray emission from magnetars. The outflow from a ring on the magnetar surface is statistically preferred over outflow from a polar cap.
We present the X-ray timing and spectral evolution of the Galactic Center magnetar SGR J1745-2900 (SGR*) for the first 4 months post-discovery using data obtained with the Nuclear Spectroscopic ...Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Swift observatories. Our timing analysis reveals a large increase in the magnetar spin-down rate by a factor of 2.6 plus or minus 0.07 over our data span. We further show that the change in spin evolution was likely coincident with a bright X-ray burst observed in 2013 June by Swift, and if so, there was no accompanying discontinuity in the frequency. We find that the source 3 to 10 kiloelectronvolt flux has declined monotonically by a factor of approximately 2 over an 80-day period post-outburst accompanied by an approximately 20 percent decrease in the source's blackbody temperature, although there is evidence for both flux and kiloteslas having leveled off. We argue that the torque variations are likely to be magnetospheric in nature and will dominate over any dynamical signatures of orbital motion around Sgr A*.
ABSTRACT On 2014 April 23, the Swift satellite responded to a hard X-ray transient detected by its Burst Alert Telescope, which turned out to be a stellar flare from a nearby, young M dwarf binary DG ...CVn. We utilize observations at X-ray, UV, optical, and radio wavelengths to infer the properties of two large flares. The X-ray spectrum of the primary outburst can be described over the 0.3-100 keV bandpass by either a single very high-temperature plasma or a nonthermal thick-target bremsstrahlung model, and we rule out the nonthermal model based on energetic grounds. The temperatures were the highest seen spectroscopically in a stellar flare, at TX of 290 MK. The first event was followed by a comparably energetic event almost a day later. We constrain the photospheric area involved in each of the two flares to be >1020 cm2, and find evidence from flux ratios in the second event of contributions to the white light flare emission in addition to the usual hot, T ∼ 104 K blackbody emission seen in the impulsive phase of flares. The radiated energy in X-rays and white light reveal these events to be the two most energetic X-ray flares observed from an M dwarf, with X-ray radiated energies in the 0.3-10 keV bandpass of 4 × 1035 and 9 × 1035 erg, and optical flare energies at EV of 2.8 × 1034 and 5.2 × 1034 erg, respectively. The results presented here should be integrated into updated modeling of the astrophysical impact of large stellar flares on close-in exoplanetary atmospheres.
Various transient phenomena on a timescale ranging from seconds to days appear at unexpected sky positions in X-rays. MAXI, Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, on the International Space Station has been ...monitoring about 95% of the sky a day and has detected transient objects since 2009 August. Here, we describe quasi-real-time data processing systems of MAXI and a subsequent nova-alert system to find transient objects, and present the capabilities for the nova-alert system to detect transient events with excess fluxes from ≳80 mCrab in a single scan transit to ≳8 mCrab for 4 d, and to send prompt alert information to the world in less than 30 s after the onboard detection of a burst, making the best use of the International Space Station (ISS) real-time network. We also report on highlights of scientific results obtained with the system until the end of the first extended mission phase, 2015 March. Including 15 X-ray novae solely or independently discovered, we have reported on 177 transient phenomena, such as X-ray bursts, outbursts, and state transitions of X-ray binaries and X-ray flares from active stars and blazars, via the Astronomer's Telegram, and on 63 burst phenomena of other types via the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network. We summarize the results of these transient sources and phenomena focusing on the detections with the nova-alert system, and some new transients yet unpublished or requiring attention.
Abstract
We report on the X-ray spectral and spatial evolution of the symbiotic star R Aqr. Through a multiepoch observational campaign performed with Chandra between 2017 and 2022, we study the ...X-ray emission of this binary system, composed of an evolved red giant star and a white dwarf (WD). This analysis is particularly timely as the WD approached the periastron in late 2018/early 2019; thus, mass transfer, jet emission, and outburst phenomena are to be expected. Through detailed spectral analysis, we detect a significant rise in the soft X-ray (0.5–2 keV) emission of R Aqr, likely linked to jet emission, followed by a decay toward the previous quiescent state. The hard X-ray emission (5–8 keV) is not immediately affected by the periastron passage; the hard component, after maintaining the same flux level between 2017 and 2021, rapidly decays after 2022. Possible explanations for this are a change in the reflection properties of the medium surrounding the binary, obscuration of the central region by material ejected during the periastron passage, or even the partial/complete destruction of the inner regions of the accretion disk surrounding the WD. In addition to this activity in the central region, extended emission is also detected, likely linked to a hot spot in a pre-outburst-emitted jet, which can be observed moving away from the system’s central region.
Previous detections of individual astrophysical sources of neutrinos are limited to the Sun and the supernova 1987A, whereas the origins of the diffuse flux of high-energy cosmic neutrinos remain ...unidentified. On 22 September 2017, we detected a high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, with an energy of ~290 tera-electron volts. Its arrival direction was consistent with the location of a known γ-ray blazar, TXS 0506+056, observed to be in a flaring state. An extensive multiwavelength campaign followed, ranging from radio frequencies to γ-rays. These observations characterize the variability and energetics of the blazar and include the detection of TXS 0506+056 in very-high-energy γ-rays. This observation of a neutrino in spatial coincidence with a γ-ray-emitting blazar during an active phase suggests that blazars may be a source of high-energy neutrinos.
ABSTRACT
SMC X-1 is a high-mass X-ray binary showing superorbital modulation with an unstable period. Previous monitoring shows three excursion events in 1996–1998, 2005–2007, and 2014–2016. The ...superorbital period drifts from ≳60 to ≲40 d and then evolves back during an excursion. Here, we report a new excursion event of SMC X-1 in 2020–2021, indicating that the superorbital modulation has an unpredictable, chaotic nature. We trace the spin-period evolution and find that the spin-up rate accelerated 1 yr before the onset of this new excursion, which suggests a possible inside-out process connecting the spin-up acceleration and the superorbital excursion. This results in a deviation of the spin-period residual, similar to the behaviour of the first excursion in 1996–1998. In further analysis of the pulse profile evolution, we find that the pulsed fraction shows a long-term evolution and may be connected to the superorbital excursion. These discoveries deepen the mystery of SMC X-1 because they cannot be solely interpreted by the warped-disc model. Upcoming pointed observations and theoretical studies may improve our understanding of the detailed accretion mechanisms taking place.
Abstract
Winds of massive stars are suspected to be inhomogeneous (or clumpy), which biases the measures of their mass-loss rates. In high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), the compact object can be used ...as an orbiting X-ray point source to probe the wind and constrain its clumpiness. We perform a spectrotiming analysis of the HMXB OAO 1657–415 with nonsimultaneous NuSTAR and NICER observations. We compute the hardness ratio from the energy-resolved light curves, and, using an adaptive rebinning technique, we thus select appropriate time segments to search for rapid spectral variations on timescales of a few hundred to thousands of seconds. The column density and intensity of the iron K
α
line were strongly correlated, and the recorded spectral variations were consistent with accretion from a clumpy wind. We also illustrate a novel framework to measure clump sizes and masses in HMXBs more accurately based on the absorption measurements and orbital parameters of the source. We then discuss the limitations posed by current X-ray spacecraft in such measurements and present prospects with future X-ray missions. We find that the source pulse profiles show a moderate dependence on energy. We identify a previously undetected dip in the pulse profile visible throughout the NuSTAR observation near spin phase 0.15 possibly caused by intrinsic changes in accretion geometry close to the neutron star. We do not find any evidence for the debated cyclotron line at ∼36 keV in the time-averaged or phase-resolved spectra with NuSTAR.
$\textit{Swift}$'s rapid slewing, flexible planning, and multi-wavelength
instruments make it the most capable space-based follow-up engine for finding
poorly localized sources. During O1 and O2 ...$\textit{Swift}$ successfully tiled
hundreds of square-degrees of sky in the LVC localization regions, searching
for, and identifying, possible X-ray and UV/O transients in the field.
$\textit{Swift}$ made important contributions to the discovery and
characterization of the kilonova AT 2017gfo, discovering the UV emission and
providing the deepest X-ray upper limits in the first 24 hours after the
trigger, strongly constraining the dynamics and geometry of the counterpart.
$\textit{Swift}$ tiled 92% of the galaxy convolved error region down to average
X-ray flux sensitivities of $10^{-12}$ erg $\mbox{cm}^{-2}$ $\mbox{s}^{-1}$,
significantly increasing our confidence that AT 2017gfo is indeed the
counterpart to GW 170817 and sGRB 170817. However, there remains significant
room for improvement of $\textit{Swift}$'s follow-up in preparation for O3.
This will take the form of both revised observation strategy based on detailed
analysis of the results from O2, and significant changes to $\textit{Swift}$'s
operational capabilities. These improvements are necessary both for maximizing
the likelihood that $\textit{Swift}$ finds a counterpart, and minimizing the
impact that follow-up activities have on other $\textit{Swift}$ science
priorities. We outline areas of improvement to the observing strategy itself
for optimal tiling of the LVC localization regions. We also discuss ongoing
work on operational upgrades that will decrease latency in our response time,
and minimize impact on pre-planned observations, while maintaining spacecraft
health and safety.
