MXenes are a set of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides that offer many potential applications in energy storage and electronic devices. As an important parameter to design new ...electronic devices, we investigate the work functions of bare MXenes and their functionalized ones with F, OH, and O chemical groups using first-principles calculations. From our calculations, it turns out that the OH-terminated MXenes attain ultralow work functions between 1.6 and 2.8 eV. Moreover, depending on the type of the transition metal, the F or O functionalization affects increasing or decreasing the work functions. We show that the changes in the work functions upon functionalizations are linearly correlated with the changes in the surface dipole moments. It is shown that the work functions of the F- or O-terminated MXenes are controlled by two factors: the induced dipole moments by the charge transfers between F/O and the substrate, and the changes in the total surface dipole moments caused by surface relaxation upon the functionalization. However, in the cases of the OH-terminated MXenes, in addition to these two factors, the intrinsic dipole moments of the OH groups play an important role in determining the total dipole moments and consequently justify their ultralow work functions.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication following severe sepsis, its incidence is increasing, and it is associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Rutin is a glycoside of the ...bioflavonoid quercetin with various protective effects due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. In this research, we tried to assess the protective effect of rutin administration in a model of AKI in C57BL/6 mice. For induction of AKI, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was injected once (10 mg/kg, i.p.) and rutin was p.o. given at doses of 50 or 200 mg/kg. Treatment of LPS-challenged group with rutin lowered serum level of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), restored to some extent renal oxidative stress-related indices such as malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. In addition, rutin brought back renal nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2), sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), interleukin-6, and caspase 3 activity to their control levels. Moreover, protective effect of rutin was in accordance to a dose-dependent manner. Collectively, rutin is capable to mitigate LPS-induced AKI via appropriate modulation of renal oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.
This study evaluated the relationship between arsenic uptake via drinking water ingestion and arsenic concentration in fingernails as a biomarker for human exposure. For this purpose, we collected ...fingernail samples from 40 healthy participants of arsenic-affected rural regions of Kaboudrahang County, the west of Iran. A total of 49 fingernail samples were also collected from individuals who lived in areas where contamination of drinking water sources with arsenic had not been reported. It was found that the fingernails arsenic contents in 50 and 4.08% of the samples collected from arsenic-contaminated and reference villages were higher than the normal arsenic values of nails (0.43-1.08 µg/g), respectively. Based on the results of adjusted multiple linear regression, a significant association was found between groundwater and fingernails arsenic concentration (p < 0.001). Moreover, a statistically significant association was shown between arsenic in the fingernail samples and gender (p = 0.037). Fingernails arsenic contents were not significantly affected by other variables including age, smoking habits, and BMI (p > 0.05). In light of the results of this study, the use of biological indicators such as fingernail tissues due to easier sampling and less risk of external contamination is suitable for assessing exposure to heavy metals in contaminated areas.
Two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TIs) have been recognized as a new class of quantum state of matter. They are distinguished from normal 2D insulators with their nontrivial band-structure ...topology identified by the Z sub(2) number as protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Two-dimensional TIs have intriguing spin-velocity locked conducting edge states and insulating properties in the bulk. In the edge states, the electrons with opposite spins propagate in opposite directions and the backscattering is fully prohibited when the TRS is conserved. This leads to a quantized dissipationless "two-lane highway" for charge and spin transportation and promises potential applications. Up to now, only very few 2D systems have been discovered to possess this property. The lack of suitable material obstructs further study and application. Here, by using first-principles calculations, we propose that functionalized MXenes with oxygen, M sub(2) CO sub(2) (M=W, Mo, and Cr), are 2D TIs with the largest gap of 0.194 eV in the W case. They are dynamically stable and natively antioxidant. Most importantly, they are very likely to be easily synthesized by recently developed selective chemical etching of transition-metal carbides (the M sub()n1AX sub()nphase). This will pave the way to tremendous applications of 2D TIs, such as "ideal" conducting wire, multifunctional spintronic devices, and the realization of topological superconductivity and Majorana modes for quantum computing.
Layered MAX phases are exfoliated into 2D single layers and multilayers, so‐called MXenes. Using first‐principles calculations, the formation and electronic properties of various MXene systems, M2C ...(M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Ta) and M2N (M = Ti, Cr, Zr) with surfaces chemically functionalized by F, OH, and O groups, are examined. Upon appropriate surface functionalization, Sc2C, Ti2C, Zr2C, and Hf2C MXenes are expected to become semiconductors. It is also derived theoretically that functionalized Cr2C and Cr2N MXenes are magnetic. Thermoelectric calculations based on the Boltzmann theory imply that semiconducting MXenes attain very large Seebeck coefficients at low temperatures.
2D, single‐layer nanostructures of transition metal carbides and nitrides, so‐called MXene, here M2C (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Ta) and M2N (M = Ti, Cr, Zr), which are chemically functionalized by F, OH, and O groups, are shown to have potential applications in optoelectronic, spintronic, and thermoelectric nanodevices based on first‐principles calculations.
Systemic inflammation following infection is usually associated with long-term complications including cognitive deficit and dementia. Neuroinflammation and cognitive decline are also main hallmarks ...of several neurological conditions. Naringenin is a citrus flavanone with anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antioxidant potential. In this study, the protective effect of naringenin against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cognitive decline was evaluated in the rat. LPS was daily injected at a dose of 167 μg/kg for 1 week and naringenin was administered p.o. at doses of 25, 50, or 100 mg/kg/day. Treatment of LPS-injected rats with naringenin dose-dependently improved spatial recognition memory in Y maze, discrimination ratio in novel object discrimination task, and retention and recall capability in passive avoidance test. Furthermore, naringenin lowered hippocampal malondialdehyde (MDA) as an index of lipid peroxidation and improved antioxidant defensive system comprising superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione (GSH) in addition to decreasing acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Additionally, naringenin was able to lower hippocampal nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) level and its immunoreactivity, and to elevate nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2). Taken together, naringenin could alleviate LPS-induced cognitive deficits and neuroinflammation, as was evident from attenuation of oxidative stress and AChE and modulation of Nrf2/NF-κB/TNFα/COX2/iNOS/TLR4/GFAP.
Aims: Temozolomide (TMZ) is an alkylating agent used for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) treatment. Nevertheless, resistance to TMZ is a major obstacle to successful treatment of this cancer. The aim ...of the present study was to investigate the effects of TMZ and thymoquinone (TQ) on U87MG cell line.
Materials and Methods: The effect of TMZ and/or TQ on viability and invasion potential of U87MG cells was evaluated using various techniques including 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, lactate dehydrogenase activity, cell invasion, migration, and adhesion assays. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and polymerase chain reaction were used to study the expression and secretion of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs).
Results: Combination of TMZ and TQ had a synergistic cytotoxic effect on U87MG cells. TMZ and/or TQ significantly reduced the potential of U87MG cells invasion. In addition, after treating with TMZ and/or TQ, there was a decrease in the levels of matrix matrix metalloproteinase 2 nad 9 (MMP 2 and 9) expression and secretion in U87MG cells.
Conclusions: The combination of TMZ and TQ may emerge as a promising strategy for the successful treatment of GBM.
•Neonatal cortical activity organizes into transient network states.•These states have specific spectral and connectivity patterns.•Vigilance states and brain injury affect the dynamics of these ...transient network states.•Quiet sleep has more brain-wide neural synchronization compared to active sleep.•Brain injury is associated with lowered dynamics in the cortical networks.
Early neurodevelopment is critically dependent on the structure and dynamics of spontaneous neuronal activity; however, the natural organization of newborn cortical networks is poorly understood. Recent adult studies suggest that spontaneous cortical activity exhibits discrete network states with physiological correlates. Here, we studied newborn cortical activity during sleep using hidden Markov modeling to determine the presence of such discrete neonatal cortical states (NCS) in 107 newborn infants, with 47 of them presenting with a perinatal brain injury. Our results show that neonatal cortical activity organizes into four discrete NCSs that are present in both cardinal sleep states of a newborn infant, active and quiet sleep, respectively. These NCSs exhibit state-specific spectral and functional network characteristics. The sleep states exhibit different NCS dynamics, with quiet sleep presenting higher fronto-temporal activity and a stronger brain-wide neuronal coupling. Brain injury was associated with prolonged lifetimes of the transient NCSs, suggesting lowered dynamics, or flexibility, in the cortical networks. Taken together, the findings suggest that spontaneously occurring transient network states are already present at birth, with significant physiological and pathological correlates; this NCS analysis framework can be fully automatized, and it holds promise for offering an objective, global level measure of early brain function for benchmarking neurodevelopmental or clinical research.
In this investigation, an innovative index was developed based on the fuzzy inference system for assessing the quality of bottled drinking waters. A method was developed to aggregate the values ...obtained from the defuzzification step. A total number of 24 quality parameters revealing the characteristics of bottled were in terms of physiochemical, dietary, toxic, and pathogenic aspects were selected as the input parameters. 30 samples were taken from the independent brands found in the Hamadan province retail market to evaluate the bottled water quality index (BWQI). Results show that the values obtained from measuring the parameters are in the range of the standard levels set by national regulations. The BWQI scores obtained from samples were in the range of 61.2-73.8 attributing to the marginal and fair descriptive classes. The drinking bottled water samples had better scores because of low contents of NO
