A waveguide short-slot two-plane coupler is proposed as a component of 2-D beam-switching Butler matrix. The hybrid and cross coupler operations are designed by including the 2-D polarity symmetry, ...the propagation constant, and the coupling with the ports of the modes in the coupled region. Their designs are confirmed by experiments. The achieved bandwidth is approximately 2%, restricted by the frequency characteristic of the modes in the coupled region. Since the short-slot two-plane hybrid coupler itself acts as the 2 ×2-way 2-D beam-switching Butler matrix, the beam switching is also verified by measurements. The general configuration of the 2-D beam-switching Butler matrix is also proposed by using the short-slot two-plane couplers.

A growing body of literature suggests that oral health can influence cognitive function during aging. However, it is currently unclear whether reduced masticatory efficiency influences ...cognitive impairment in longitudinal studies.
This study sought to investigate the effects of reduced chewing ability on the incidence of cognitive impairment using national representative data from 10 years of follow-up in Korea. Among the 10,254 people recruited in 2006 (1st wave), 7568 with normal cognitive function were selected. The participants were followed up every 2 years. The number of participants followed up until the 6th wave was 5020 in 2016. Chewing ability and scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination were recorded using self-reported questionnaires. Risk factors for dementia taken from systematic literature reviews were used as covariates. We performed logistic regression and created general estimating equation models after controlling for all covariates to assess the relationship between chewing ability and cognitive decline. Decreased chewing function was associated with mild cognitive impairment after controlling for confounding variables.
The odds ratio for cognitive impairment was about 1.28 times higher than in people with poor chewing function as in those with good chewing function. We identified changes in chewing function from the 1st wave to the 6th wave; the odds ratios were 2.21 (95% confidence interval = 1.90–2.58) in the good-poor group and 2.11 (95% confidence interval = 1.74–2.55) in the poor-poor group.
We identified an impairment in cognitive function in the poor (poor-poor and good-poor) chewing ability group. Therefore, we have confirmed that reduced mastication efficiency may contribute to a deterioration in cognitive function. People with deteriorated chewing ability must be given additional attention to aid in the prevention of cognitive decline.
Despite the recent acceptance of thrombectomy as the standard of care in patients with acute anterior circulation stroke, the benefits of thrombectomy remain uncertain for patients with acute basilar ...artery occlusion (BAO). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of thrombectomy and to identify predictors of outcomes in a large cohort of patients with acute BAO.
This study included 212 consecutive patients with acute BAO who underwent either stent-retriever or contact aspiration thrombectomy as the first-line approach between January 2011 and August 2017 at 3 stroke centers. Clinical and radiologic data were prospectively collected and stored in a database at each center. Multivariable ordinal logistic regression was performed to assess the association between each characteristic and 90-day modified Rankin scale scores. Reperfusion was successful in 91.5% (194/212) of patients; 44.8% (95/212) of patients achieved 90-day modified Rankin scale 0 to 2. The symptomatic hemorrhage rate was 1.9% (4/212) and mortality was 16% (34/212). In a multivariable ordinal regression, younger age, lower National Institute of Health stroke scale on admission, and absence of diabetes mellitus and parenchymal hematoma were significantly associated with a favorable shift in the overall distribution of 90-day modified Rankin scale scores. Treatment outcomes were similar between patients who received stent-retriever thrombectomy and contact aspiration thrombectomy as the first-line technique.
Endovascular thrombectomy was effective and safe for treating patients with acute BAO. Age, the baseline National Institute of Health stroke scale, diabetes mellitus, and parenchymal hematoma were associated with better outcomes. This study showed no superiority of the stent-retriever over the aspiration thrombectomy for treating acute BAO.
Recent advances in pluripotent stem cell technology provide an alternative source of human hepatocytes to overcome the limitations of current toxicity tests. However, this approach requires ...optimization and standardization before it can be used as a fast and reliable toxicity screening system. Here, we designed and tested microwell culture platforms with various diameters. We found that large quantities of uniformly-sized hepatocyte-like cell (HLC) spheroids (3D-uniHLC-Ss) could be efficiently and reproducibly generated in a short period time from a small number of differentiating human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). The hPSC-3D-uniHLC-Ss that were produced in 500-μm diameter microwells consistently exhibited high expressions of hepatic marker genes and had no significant signs of cell death. Importantly, a hepatic master gene hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α (HNF4α) was maintained at high levels, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition was significantly attenuated in hPSC-3D-uniHLC-Ss. Additionally, when compared with 3D-HLC-Ss that were produced in other 3D platforms, hPSC-3D-uniHLC-Ss showed significantly higher hepatic gene expressions and drug-metabolizing activity of the enzyme, CYP3A4. Imaging-based drug toxicity studies demonstrated that hPSC-3D-uniHLC-Ss exhibited enhanced sensitivity to various hepatotoxicants, compared to HLCs, which were differentiated under 2D conditions. Precise prediction of drug-induced hepatotoxicity is a crucial step in the early phases of drug discovery. Thus, the hPSC-3D-uniHLC-Ss produced using our microwell platform could be used as an imaging-based toxicity screening system to predict drug hepatotoxicity.

Three genetically distinct subgroups emerged and subsequently spread along different flyways during fall 2014 into Europe, North America, and East Asia, respectively. All three subgroups reappeared in Japan, a wintering site for waterfowl from Eurasia and parts of North America.
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) displays cellular hierarchies harboring a subpopulation of stem-like cells (GSCs). Enhancer of Zeste Homolog 2 (EZH2), the lysine methyltransferase of Polycomb ...repressive complex 2, mediates transcriptional repression of prodifferentiation genes in both normal and neoplastic stem cells. An oncogenic role of EZH2 as a transcriptional silencer is well established; however, additional functions of EZH2 are incompletely understood. Here, we show that EZH2 binds to and methylates STAT3, leading to enhanced STAT3 activity by increased tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT3. The EZH2-STAT3 interaction preferentially occurs in GSCs relative to non-stem bulk tumor cells, and it requires a specific phosphorylation of EZH2. Inhibition of EZH2 reverses the silencing of Polycomb target genes and diminishes STAT3 activity, suggesting therapeutic strategies.

Chemically modified graphene sheets were dispersed in a high-performance polyimide (PI) matrix using polyamic acid (PAA)/graphene nanocomposite as a precursor. PI nanocomposite films with different ...loadings of graphene sheets were prepared by thermal imidization of the as-prepared PAA/graphene nanocomposites. Graphene oxide (GO) synthesized by Hummer’s method was chemically reduced with various reducing agents to produce reduced GOs (rGOs). The incorporation of only 5 wt % GO resulted in an ∼12-fold and ∼18-fold increase in the tensile strength and tensile modulus of PI, respectively, while the PI/rGO nanocomposites were found to have relatively inferior tensile properties. The superior mechanical properties of the PI/GO nanocomposites were attributed to the good dispersion and effective stress transfer between the polymer and GO sheets, as evidenced by the results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and morphological studies. Furthermore, the PI/GO nanocomposites exhibited higher loading capacity than PI/rGO. The thermo-oxidative stability of PI was also remarkably improved with the addition of both GO and rGOs, but rGOs had a more pronounced effect. The electrical conductivity of PI/rGO nanocomposites was higher than that of PI/GO, suggesting restoration of the graphene basal plane upon the reduction of GO. The highest electrical conductivity was achieved for the l-ascorbic acid reduced GO-reinforced PI nanocomposites.
SARS-CoV-2 induces illness and death in humans by causing systemic infections. Evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 can induce brain pathology in humans and other hosts. In this study, we used a canine ...transmission model to examine histopathologic changes in the brains of dogs infected with SARS-CoV-2. We observed substantial brain pathology in SARS-CoV-2–infected dogs, particularly involving blood–brain barrier damage resembling small vessel disease, including changes in tight junction proteins, reduced laminin levels, and decreased pericyte coverage. Furthermore, we detected phosphorylated tau, a marker of neurodegenerative disease, indicating a potential link between SARS-CoV-2–associated small vessel disease and neurodegeneration. Our findings of degenerative changes in the dog brain during SARS-CoV-2 infection emphasize the potential for transmission to other hosts and induction of similar signs and symptoms. The dynamic brain changes in dogs highlight that even asymptomatic individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 may develop neuropathologic changes in the brain.
Background and Purpose- Based on its mechanism, the use of balloon guide catheters (BGCs) may be beneficial during endovascular treatment, regardless of the type of mechanical recanalization modality ...used-stent retriever thrombectomy or thrombaspiration. We evaluated whether the use of BGCs can be beneficial regardless of the first-line mechanical endovascular modality used. Methods- We retrospectively reviewed consecutive acute stroke patients who underwent stent retriever thrombectomy or thrombaspiration from the prospectively maintained registries of 17 stroke centers nationwide. Patients were assigned to the BGC or non-BGC group based on the use of BGCs during procedures. Endovascular and clinical outcomes were compared between the BGC and non-BGC groups. To adjust the influence of the type of first-line endovascular modality on successful recanalization and favorable outcome, multivariable analyses were also performed. Results- This study included a total of 955 patients. Stent retriever thrombectomy was used as the first-line modality in 526 patients (55.1%) and thrombaspiration in 429 (44.9%). BGC was used in 516 patients (54.0%; 61.2% of stent retriever thrombectomy patients; 45.2% of thrombaspiration patients). The successful recanalization rate was significantly higher in the BGC group compared with the non-BGC group (86.8% versus 74.7%, respectively; P<0.001). Furthermore, the first-pass recanalization rate was more frequent (37.0% versus 14.1%; P<0.001), and the number of device passes was fewer in the BGC group (2.5±1.9 versus 3.3±2.1; P<0.001). The procedural time was also shorter in the BGC group (54.3±27.4 versus 67.6±38.2; P<0.001). The use of BGC was an independent factor for successful recanalization (odds ratio, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.54-3.10; P<0.001) irrespective of the type of first-line endovascular modality used. The use of BGC was also an independent factor for a favorable outcome (odds ratio, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.02-1.92; P=0.038) irrespective of the type of first-line endovascular modality used. Conclusions- Regardless of the first-line mechanical endovascular modality used, the use of BGC in endovascular treatment was beneficial in terms of both recanalization success and functional outcome.
Evidences have shown that noise could be a risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Since periodontitis and CVD are characterized by inflammation, it is reasonable to doubt that ...occupational/environmental noise is a risk factor for periodontitis. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between occupational/environmental noise and periodontitis in a nationally representative sample of Korean adults.
This cross-sectional study used data from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study sample included 8327 adults aged 40 to 80 years old. Noise exposure and the duration of the exposure were assessed with self-report questionnaires. The dependent variable was periodontitis. Age, gender, place of residence, income, marital status, smoking, frequency of daily tooth brushing, recent dental checkup, and diabetes were included as covariates. Logistic regression analyses estimated the association between noise exposure and periodontitis.
Those who were exposed to environmental noise during their lifetime had an increased prevalence of severe periodontitis (odds ratio OR 1.88; 95% confidence interval CI 1.05 to 3.40), and this association was strengthened as the duration of the environmental noise exposure was longer (OR of > 120 months 2.35 and OR of ≤120 months 1.49). There was a combined relationship for severe periodontitis between occupational and environmental noise exposure (OR of both exposures 2.62, OR of occupational exposure only 1.12, and OR of environmental exposure only 1.57).
Our study shows that noise exposure is associated with periodontitis, and the association was higher in the synergism between occupational and environmental interaction.
