Abnormality in mitochondria has been suggested to be associated with development of allergic airway disorders. In this study, to evaluate the relationship between mitochondrial reactive oxygen ...species (ROS) and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in allergic asthma, we used a newly developed mitochondrial ROS inhibitor, NecroX-5. NecroX-5 reduced the increase of mitochondrial ROS generation in airway inflammatory cells, as well as bronchial epithelial cells, NLRP3 inflammasome activation, the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-κB, increased expression of various inflammatory mediators and pathophysiological features of allergic asthma in mice. Finally, blockade of IL-1β substantially reduced airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness in the asthmatic mice. These findings suggest that mitochondrial ROS have a critical role in the pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation through the modulation of NLRP3 inflammasome activation, providing a novel role of airway epithelial cells expressing NLRP3 inflammasome as an immune responder.
We investigated the scale relationship between size and cortical structure of human brains in a large sample of magnetic resonance imaging data. Cortical structure was estimated with several measures ...(cortical volume, surface area, and thickness, sulcal depth, and absolute mean curvature in sulcal regions and sulcal walls) using three-dimensional surface-based methods in 148 normal subjects (n men/women: 83/65, age mean ± standard deviation: 25.0 ± 4.9 years). We found significantly larger scaling exponents than geometrically predicted for cortical surface area, absolute mean curvature in sulcal regions and in sulcal walls, and smaller ones for cortical volume and thickness. As brain size increases, the cortex thickens only slightly, but the degree of sulcal convolution increases dramatically, indicating that human cortices are not simply scaled versions of one another. Our results are consistent with previous hypotheses that greater local clustering of interneuronal connections would be required in a larger brain, and fiber tension between local cortical areas would induce cortical folds. We suggest that sex effects are explained by brain size effects in cortical structure at a macroscopic and lobar regional level, and that it is necessary to consider true relationships between cortical measures and brain size due to the limitations of linear stereotaxic normalization.
A mass-producible mesoporous graphene nanoball (MGB) was fabricated via a precursor-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique for supercapacitor application. Polystyrene balls and reduced ...iron created under high temperature and a hydrogen gas environment provide a solid carbon source and a catalyst for graphene growth during the precursor-assisted CVD process, respectively. Carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid functionalization of the polystyrene ball facilitates homogeneous dispersion of the hydrophobic polymer template in the metal precursor solution, thus, resulting in a MGB with a uniform number of graphene layers. The MGB is shown to have a specific surface area of 508 m2/g and is mesoporous with a mean mesopore diameter of 4.27 nm. Mesopores are generated by the removal of agglomerated iron domains, permeating down through the soft polystyrene spheres and providing the surface for subsequent graphene growth during the heating process in a hydrogen environment. This technique requires only drop-casting of the precursor/polystyrene solution, allowing for mass-production of multilayer MGBs. The supercapacitor fabricated by the use of the MGB as an electrode demonstrates a specific capacitance of 206 F/g and more than 96% retention of capacitance after 10,000 cycles. The outstanding characteristics of the MGB as an electrode for supercapacitors verify the strong potential for use in energy-related areas.
Background. Clarithromycin-resistant Helicobacter pylori is associated with point mutations in the 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. Methods. A total of 1232 patients participated and were divided into ...2 control groups and 1 case group. Patients in the APC control group, which consisted of 308 randomly assigned participants, were treated with standard triple therapy, consisting of amoxicillin, rabeprazole, and clarithromycin; 308 participants in the APM control group were treated with amoxicillin, rabeprazole, and metronidazole. For the 616 participants in the case group, a test for point mutations in the 23S rRNA gene of H. pylori was conducted. A total of 218 individuals in the case group received a new tailored therapy regimen, in which amoxicillin, rabeprazole, and clarithromycin were given in the absence of a mutation, whereas clarithromycin was replaced by metronidazole if the mutation was detected. Results. The rate of eradication of H. pylori in the tailored group was 91.2% (176/193), which was significantly higher than that in the APC (75.9% 214/282; P < .001) and APM (79.1% 219/277; P < .001) control groups. Conclusion. The rate of H. pylori eradication among patients who received tailored therapy on the basis of detection of a clarithromycin resistance mutation by polymerase chain reaction was much higher than the rate among patients who received a standard triple therapy regimen. The present study was investigated the effects of dietary Achyranthes japonica extract (AJE) supplementation on the growth performance, total tract digestibility, cecal microflora, excreta noxious ...gas emission, breast meat quality, and organ weight in broiler chickens. In total, 640 Ross × Ross male broiler chickens (1-day-old) were randomly distributed into 4 dietary treatments with 10 replicate cages (16 birds/replicate) per treatment group for 5 wk. The dietary treatments included a control basal diet without AJE, and diets with 0.025, 0.05, or 0.1% AJE. Body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion improved linearly with the supplementation of AJE over the experimental period (days 1 to 35) (P < 0.05). Dietary AJE supplementation caused a significant increase in the apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen (linear, P < 0.05). The cecal Lactobacillus, E. coli, and Salmonella counts were linearly affected with increasing dietary AJE supplementation (P < 0.05). With increasing levels of AJE, excreta ammonia gas concentration showed a linear decrease (P < 0.05). The breast muscle weight linearly increased, along with a decrease in the abdominal fat weight, in treatment groups fed with AJE (P < 0.05). These results indicate that dietary addition with increasing AJE linearly improved growth performance, total tract digestibility, cecal microflora, excreta ammonia gas emission, and abdominal fat weight in broiler chickens.
Despite the ever‐growing demand for Li metals as next‐generation Li battery electrodes, little attention has been paid to their oxidation stability, which must be achieved for practical applications. ...Here, a new class of printable solid electrolyte interphase mimic (pSEI) for antioxidative Li metal electrodes is presented. The pSEI (≈1 µm) is directly fabricated on a thin Li metal electrode (25 µm) by processing solvent‐free, UV polymerization‐assisted printing, exhibiting its manufacturing simplicity and scalability. The pSEI is rationally designed to mimic a typical SEI comprising organic and inorganic components, in which ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate and diallyldimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide are introduced as an organic mimic (acting as a moisture‐repellent structural framework) and inorganic mimic (allowing facile Li‐ion transport/high Li+ transference number), respectively. Driven by the chemical/architectural uniqueness, the pSEI enables the thin Li metal electrode to show exceptional antioxidation stability and reliable full cell performance after exposure to humid environments.

Metformin use has been associated with a decreased incidence and mortality of various cancers.
Aim
To evaluate the association between metformin use and gastric cancer.
Methods
We ...randomly selected 100 000 type 2 diabetic patients from the 2004 Korean National Health Insurance claim database, and assessed gastric cancer incidence among 39 989 patients (aged 30–97 years) who were regularly treated with anti‐diabetic drugs and followed‐up from 2004 to 2010. In total, 26 690 patients had used metformin out of 32 978 diabetics who had not regularly used insulin (insulin non‐users), and 5855 patients had used metformin out of 7011 regular insulin users.
Results
Patients who used metformin showed a lower incidence of gastric cancer than those who did not use metformin, in insulin non‐users (P = 0.047, log‐rank test). However, in patients on regular insulin, there was no difference of gastric cancer incidence according to metformin use. In insulin non‐users, the adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) for metformin use was 0.73 (95% confidential interval CI, 0.53–1.01) with borderline statistical significance (P = 0.059). Duration of metformin use was associated with the reduction in gastric cancer risk (AHR, 0.88; 95% CI 0.81–0.96, P = 0.003), especially in patients who used metformin for more than 3 years (AHR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.37–0.87; P = 0.009).
Conclusion
Metformin use >3 years in type 2 diabetics who do not use insulin is associated with a significantly reduced gastric cancer risk.

Background Although several previous studies have investigated the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the study results have been inconsistent.
...Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the presence of MetS and AGA according to gender in a middle‐aged Korean population.
Methods A population‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted on a sample from the Korean Genome Epidemiology Study. In total, 3408 subjects (1707 men and 1701 women) were enrolled between January 2008 and February 2010. The Norwood classification for men and Ludwig classification for women were used for assessment of the degree of hair loss. Information on components of MetS together with other possible risk factors was collected.
Results In men, the risk of having Norwood type IV or greater was not increased for subjects with MetS compared with those without MetS. In women, the risk of having Ludwig type I or greater was significantly increased for subjects with MetS compared with those without MetS after controlling for age and smoking status (OR 1·68, 95% CI 1·14–2·48; P = 0·01). Similar results were also observed for the number of fulfilled components of MetS odds ratio (OR) 1·38, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·00–1·91; P < 0·05. When each component of MetS was considered individually, associations between AGA and all five components of MetS (waist circumference, triglycerides, high‐density lipoprotein‐C, blood glucose, and blood pressure) were not statistically significant. When multiple regression was used to adjust for age, family history and smoking, there was no significant association between the prevalence of MetS and moderate to severe AGA in the male group. On the contrary, a statistically significant positive association was noted between the prevalence of MetS and AGA in the female group.
Conclusions Our analysis of AGA and the prevalence of MetS in a large population‐based cohort demonstrated quite different findings compared with previous reports. The different results according to gender suggest that there may be different mechanisms that are yet to be defined between male and female AGA.
