An experiment to search for light sterile neutrinos is conducted at a reactor with a thermal power of 2.8 GW located at the Hanbit nuclear power complex. The search is done with a detector consisting ...of a ton of Gd-loaded liquid scintillator in a tendon gallery approximately 24 m from the reactor core. The measured antineutrino event rate is 1976 per day with a signal to background ratio of about 22. The shape of the antineutrino energy spectrum obtained from the eight-month data-taking period is compared with a hypothesis of oscillations due to active-sterile antineutrino mixing. No strong evidence of 3+1 neutrino oscillation is found. An excess around the 5 MeV prompt energy range is observed as seen in existing longer-baseline experiments. The mixing parameter sin^{2}2θ_{14} is limited up to less than 0.1 for Δm_{41}^{2} ranging from 0.2 to 2.3 eV^{2} with a 90% confidence level.
In this paper we present results of a numerical study using the NASA finite-volume GCM to elucidate a plausible mechanism for aerosol impact on the Asian summer monsoon involving interaction with ...physical processes over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). During the pre-monsoon season of March-April, dusts from the deserts of western China, Afghanistan/Pakistan, and the Middle East are transported into and stacked up against the northern and southern slopes of the TP. The absorption of solar radiation by dust heats up the elevated surface air over the slopes. On the southern slopes, the atmospheric heating is reinforced by black carbon from local emission. The heated air rises via dry convection, creating a positive temperature anomaly in the mid-to-upper troposphere over the TP relative to the region to the south. In May through early June in a manner akin to an "elevated heat pump", the rising hot air forced by the increasing heating in the upper troposphere, draws in warm and moist air over the Indian subcontinent, setting the stage for the onset of the South Asia summer monsoon. Our results suggest that increased dust loading coupled with black carbon emission from local sources in northern India during late spring may lead to an advance of the rainy periods and subsequently an intensification of the Indian summer monsoon. The enhanced rainfall over India is associated with the development of an aerosol-induced large-scale sea level pressure anomaly pattern, which causes the East Asia (Mei-yu) rain belt to shift northwestward, suppressing rainfall over East Asia and the adjacent oceanic regions.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT

Results
Production of UPR machinery was reduced in autophagy-deficient beta cells, which was associated with diminished production of p85α and p85β regulatory subunits of phosphoinositide 3-kinase. Because of compromised UPR machinery, autophagy-deficient beta cells were susceptible to ER stressors in vitro. When mice with beta cell-specific autophagy deficiency, which have mild hyperglycaemia, were bred with
ob/ob
mice to induce ER stress in vivo, severe diabetes developed, which was accompanied by an increase in beta cell death and accumulation of reactive oxygen species. The increased demand for UPR present in obesity was unmet in autophagy-deficient beta cells. Autophagy level and autophagic activity were enhanced by lipid, while proteolysis was reduced.
Conclusions/interpretation
These results suggest that autophagy is important for intact UPR machinery and appropriate UPR in response to lipid injury that increases demand for UPR. Autophagy deficiency in pancreatic beta cells may contribute to the progression from obesity to diabetes.
Preliminary observational evidences are presented showing that the Indian subcontinent and surrounding regions are subject to heavy loading of absorbing aerosols, i.e., dust and black carbon, which ...possess spatial and temporal variability that are closely linked to those of the Asian monsoon water cycle. Consistent with the Elevated Heat Pump hypothesis, we find that increased loading of absorbing aerosols over the Indo‐Gangetic Plain in the pre‐monsoon season is associated with a) increased heating of the upper troposphere, with the formation of a warm‐core upper level anticyclone over the Tibetan Plateau in April–May, b) an advance of the monsoon rainy season in northern India in May, and c) subsequent increased rainfall over the Indian subcontinent, and decreased rainfall over East Asia in June–July.
In this study, the authors apply the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis and other observations to depict the association of the Asian–Pacific–American climate with the East Asian jet stream (EAJS). With an ...emphasis on boreal winter seasons and on interannual timescales, they analyze the variations of the EAJS and their relationships with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and extratropical North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST), and assess the relative connections of the EAJS and ENSO to the anomalies of atmospheric circulation, surface temperature, and precipitation in the Asian–Pacific–American region.
It is found that the EAJS is coupled to a teleconnection pattern spanning the entire Asian–Pacific–American region with the strongest signals over east Asia and the western Pacific. This pattern differs significantly from that associated with ENSO, which influences the earth’s climate extensively with a strongest impact on the climate over the central Pacific and east. A strong EAJS is associated with an intensification of the weather and climate systems in Asia and over the Pacific such as deepening of the east Asian trough and the Aleutian low and strengthening of the east Asian winter monsoon. It is linked to colder and drier conditions in east Asia and stronger convection over the tropical Asia–Australia sector. Compared with ENSO, the EAJS seems to link to the climate signals of Asia and the Pacific more strongly. An intensified EAJS is also associated with anomalies of temperature and precipitation in North America due to the related changes in stationary wave patterns.
While the EAJS does not strongly link to the tropical central-eastern Pacific SST, it is significantly associated with the extratropical North Pacific SST, more specifically the second most dominant mode of the empirical orthogonal function analysis of the SST. In addition, a strong (weak) EAJS seems to follow a large (small) meridional gradient of the western Pacific SST associated with warming (cooling) in the Tropics–subtropics and cooling (warming) in the extratropics.

Background and purpose
We analyzed the incidence and causes of oral anticoagulant (OAC) cessation and subsequent stroke after OAC withdrawal in a cohort of Korean stroke patients with atrial ...fibrillation.
Methods
The Korean Atrial Fibrillation Evaluation Registry in Ischemic Stroke patients (K‐ATTENTION) is a multicenter cohort study, merging stroke registries from 11 tertiary centers in Korea. The number of OAC interruption episodes and the reasons were reviewed from hospital records. Stroke after OAC withdrawal was defined when a patient experienced ischaemic stroke within 31 days after OAC withdrawal. Clinical variables were compared between patients who experienced stroke recurrence during OAC interruption and those who did not experience recurrence.
Results
Among 3213 stroke patients with atrial fibrillation, a total of 329 episodes of OAC interruption were detected in 229 patients after index stroke (mean age 72.9 ± 8.3 years, 113 female patients). The most frequent reason for OAC withdrawal was poor compliance 103 episodes (31.3%) followed by extracranial bleeding 96 episodes (29.2%). Stroke after OAC withdrawal was noted in 13 patients. Mean age, vascular risk factor profile and mean CHA2DS2‐VASc score were not significantly different between patients with and without recurrent stroke.
Conclusions
A considerable number of stroke patients with atrial fibrillation experienced temporary interruption of OAC after index stroke, which was associated with stroke recurrence of 4.0 cases per 100 interruption episodes.
This phase II study investigated the efficacy and safety of everolimus, an inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), in locally advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer.
Patients with thyroid ...cancer of any histology that was resistant or not appropriate for 131I received everolimus 10 mg daily orally until unacceptable toxicity or disease progression. The primary end point was disease control rate partial response (PR) + stable response ≥12 weeks. Secondary end points included response rates, clinical benefit (PD + durable stable disease (SD), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival, duration of response, and safety.
Thirty-eight of 40 enrolled patients were evaluable for efficacy. The disease control rate was 81% and two (5%) patients achieved objective response; their duration of response was 21+ and 24+ weeks. Stable disease (SD) and progressive disease was reported in 76% and 17% of patients, respectively. Seventeen (45%) patients showed durable SD (≥24 weeks) and clinical benefit was reported in 19 (50%) patients. Median PFS was 47 weeks 95% confidence interval (CI) 14.9–78.5. Calcitonin, CEA, and thyroglobulin concentrations were ≥50% lower than baseline in three (30%) and four (44%) patients with medullary thyroid cancer and five (33%) patients with PTC, respectively. The most common treatment-related adverse events were mucositis (84%), anorexia (44%), and aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase elevation (26%).
Everolimus had a limited activity with low response rate in locally advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer. Reasonable clinical benefit rate and safety profile may warrant further investigation.

Novel BODIPY photosensitizers were developed for imaging‐guided photodynamic therapy. The introduction of a strong electron donor to the BODIPY core through a phenyl linker combined with the twisted ...arrangement between the donor and the BODIPY acceptor is essential for reducing the energy gap between the lowest singlet excited state and the lowest triplet state (ΔEST), leading to a significant enhancement in the intersystem crossing (ISC) of the BODIPYs. Remarkably, the BDP‐5 with the smallest ΔEST (ca. 0.44 eV) exhibited excellent singlet oxygen generation capabilities in both organic and aqueous solutions. BDP‐5 also displayed bright emission in the far‐red/near‐infrared region in the condensed states. More importantly, both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that BDP‐5 NPs displayed a high potential for photodynamic cancer therapy and bioimaging.

ions. We demonstrate average single-qubit gate fidelities of 99.5Formula: see text, average two-qubit-gate fidelities of 97.5Formula: see text, and SPAM errors of 0.7Formula: see text. To illustrate the capabilities of this universal platform and provide a basis for comparison with similarly-sized devices, we compile the Bernstein-Vazirani and Hidden Shift algorithms into our native gates and execute them on the hardware with average success rates of 78Formula: see text and 35Formula: see text, respectively. These algorithms serve as excellent benchmarks for any type of quantum hardware, and show that our system outperforms all other currently available hardware.
