Removal of toxic arsenite As(III) from the contaminated surface and groundwater is essential for human health. However, direct arsenite removal is difficult compared to arsenate As(V). Therefore, the ...peroxidation of arsenite to arsenate is vital for its effective removal from water. Herein, we investigated the removal efficiency of arsenic from groundwater by oxidizing it with UV activated potassium persulfate (KPS) and subsequently adsorbing it on iron oxide impregnated granular activated carbon (FeO/GAC). A batch experiment was carried out to determine the adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics. Further, the effects of the adsorbent mass (FeO/GAC), C/Fe molar ratio, pH, arsenic concentration, competing anions, and humic acid in arsenic adsorption was studied. The characterization of FeO/GAC adsorbent was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and zeta potential measurements. Using the UV activated KPS and FeO/GAC, a ∼100% removal amount was achieved for 10 ppm of the arsenic solution in 1 h. Also, the effect of pH showed the highest removal efficiency in the pH range of 6.0–7.0 and it decreased dramatically at higher and lower pH values. The groundwater collected from Cheongyang in South Korea was spiked with 10 ppm of the arsenic (III) and more than 82% removal of arsenic was achieved in 90 min even in the presence of natural contaminants. Therefore, the results suggest that the UV activated KPS with FeO/GAC provides an effective method for treating highly-arsenic-contaminated water sources and this may be a viable alternative method over the existing methods.
•Efficient oxidation of Arsenic in water using UV activated KPS followed by adsorption on an impregnated FeO/GAC adsorbent.•The arsenic removal efficiency was 100% in artificial water and 82% in groundwater collected from Cheongyang, South Korea.•Adsorption mechanism is associated with electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, surface complexation and coprecipitation.•The thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic, spontaneous and feasible.
This study investigated the effects of job characteristics on turnover intention and the mediating effects of job satisfaction. A survey of 317 Korean care workers currently providing in-home elderly ...care service in the city of Seoul and its suburbs was conducted. The results of multiple regressions and an analysis of mediating effects indicated that role ambiguity and workload had significant effects on turnover intention. In addition, job satisfaction had a mediating effect on the influence of role ambiguity and workload on turnover intention. Finally, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
In this work, visible light responsive (VLR) ZrTiO(4)/Bi(2)O(3) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The prepared ZrTiO(4)/Bi(2)O(3) photocatalysts were ...characterized by X-ray diffraction studies (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. DRS results revealed that the extent of light absorption towards the visible region of the spectrum increased with an increase in the calcination temperature of the catalysts up to 450 degrees C and then started to decrease. The decrease in absorption at high temperatures was mainly due to the formation of polycrystalline ZrTiO(4)/Bi(2)O(3) from the tetragonal Bi(2)O(3) pure oxide particles. All the metals present in the ZrTiO(4)/Bi(2)O(3) composite nano-particles also exhibited corresponding oxide states. Particle sizes of about 7 nm were obtained during this combined method of preparation, especially with the catalysts calcined at 450 degrees C. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was measured using 4-chlorophenol as a model pollutant for these environmental remediation studies. Among the catalysts calcined at different temperatures, the samples calcined at 450 degrees C showed the most remarkable degradation of 4-chlorophenol, higher than not only the other calcined catalysts but also the commercially available Degussa P-25. This is due to the formation of smaller particle sizes, a higher surface area and stronger absorption in the visible light irradiation for these catalysts calcined at 450 degrees C. Thus, such new VLR photocatalysts can be expected to work effectively under visible light regions as an applicable alternative photocatalyst for commercial scale use.
Oral administration of royal jelly (RJ) promotes wound healing in diabetic mice. Concerns have arisen regarding the efficacy of RJ on the wound healing process of normal skin cells. In this study, a ...wound was created by scratching normal human dermal fibroblasts, one of the major cells involved in the wound healing process. The area was promptly treated with RJ at varying concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, or 5 mg/ml for up to 48 hrs and migration was analyzed by evaluating closure of the wound margins. Furthermore, altered levels of lipids, which were recently reported to participate in the wound healing process, were analyzed by HPTLC and HPLC. Migration of fibroblasts peaked at 24 hrs after wounding. RJ treatment significantly accelerated the migration of fibroblasts in a dose-dependent manner at 8 hrs. Although RJ also accelerated the migration of fibroblasts at both 20 hrs and 24 hrs after wounding, the efficacy was less potent than at 8 hrs. Among various lipid classes within fibroblasts, the level of cholesterol was significantly decreased at 8 hrs following administration of both 0.1 ug/ml and 5 mg/ml RJ. Despite a dose-dependent increase in sphinganines, the levels of sphingosines, ceramides, and glucosylceramides were not altered with any concentration of RI. We demonstrated that RJ enhances the migration of fibroblasts and alters the levels of various lipids involved in the wound healing process.
To determine whether an Internet-based tailored education program is effective for disease-free cancer survivors with cancer-related fatigue (CRF).
We randomly assigned patients who had completed ...primary cancer treatment within the past 24 months in any of four Korean hospitals and had reported moderate to severe fatigue for at least 1 week to participate in a 12-week, Internet-based, individually tailored CRF education program or to receive routine care. We based the program on the CRF guidelines of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and incorporated the transtheoretic model (TTM). At baseline and 12 weeks, we used the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) as primary outcomes and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) for secondary outcomes.
We recruited 273 participants and randomly assigned 136 to the intervention group. Compared with the control group, the intervention group had an improvement in fatigue as shown by a significantly greater decrease in BFI global score (-0.66 points; 95% CI -1.04 to -0.27) and FSS total score (-0.49; 95% CI, -0.78 to -0.21). In secondary outcomes, the intervention group experienced a significantly greater decrease in HADS anxiety score (-0.90; 95% CI, -1.51 to -0.29) as well as global quality of life (5.22; 95% CI, 0.93 to 9.50) and several functioning scores of the EORTC QLQ-C30.
An Internet-based education program based on NCCN guidelines and TTM may help patients manage CRF.
It is important to understand the differences between men and women when it comes to attitudes and risk perception toward disease. This study aimed to explore the fear of cancer from the standpoint ...of themselves and the opposite sex by cancer type.
A cross-sectional survey with a representative sample was conducted.
The least and the most feared cancers in men were thyroid cancer and lung cancer, respectively. When men assumed the perspective of women, the least and the most feared cancer were thyroid cancer and stomach cancer, respectively. The least and the most feared cancers in women were thyroid cancer and stomach cancer, respectively. When women assumed the perspective of men, the least and the most feared cancer were prostate cancer and lung cancer, respectively. When both men and women assume the perspective of the opposite sex, the fear of sex-specific cancer was relatively low compared to the actual responses of both men and women. The top six of the most feared side effects of cancer treatment were pain, psychological problems, general weakness, digestive dysfunction, fatigue, and appearance change. These were the same between men and women.
Health care providers and caregivers in the family should provide care with more attention to the differences in thoughts about cancer between men and women. Health care providers should provide care with more attention to the differences in these problems between men and women.

The fisheries industry is rapidly shifting from a traditional fishery to aquaculture paradigm and it faces various problems such as depletion of fishery resources and aging of fishing villages. We need the establishment of a fisheries big data platform that includes both the data of the central and surrounding industries of the fisheries industry for enhancement of establishment of a fisheries, 6th industrialization of fishing villages, establishment of related technical standards, and discovery of the new industries to overcome this. Data center agencies should collect, link, and pre-processing, and the platform organizer should create a water industry data virtuous circle through the establishment, operation, and data market of big data platforms to help overcome the current crisis, secure smart fisheries hegemony, and use it as a key to value transfer. Through this study, I would like to propose a policy and technical big data platform construction plan to successfully promote it.
