In this article, the author discusses the attitude of Jewish law towards the painful problem of captivity. Unfortunately, kidnappings of Jews have been a recurring issue throughout history. As a result, many questions have been addressed to the Sages regarding the ransoming of captives, especially when excessive ransoms were requested by the kidnappers. Therefore, extensive rabbinical literature on this subject has been created. Excessive demands for Jewish hostages remain a harsh weapon to this day. While in the past, excessive financial payments were requested from family members and communities, today the State of Israel is faced with excessive payments in the form of the release of a large number of terrorists. The article is divided into two main parts. The first part analyzes the mitzvah of redeeming captives and its importance in Judaism. In this discussion, the author examines different Talmudic regulations amended by the sages when an excessive ransom is requested by the kidnappers, as well as the rulings of Jewish law. The second part of the article explores the Jewish law rulings on practical questions regarding the kidnapping of soldiers and civilians by terrorist organizations, such as the question of embarking on a dangerous operation for the purpose of rescuing hostages, the status of different deals with terrorist organizations on the release of terrorists in exchange for the release of hostages, the redemption of a person who was captured as a result of his negligent behavior, and the question of freeing live terrorists in exchange for bodies. The author uses many sources from rabbinic literature since Talmudic times through the Middle Ages up to modern times. Much of this literature has been translated into Croatian from Hebrew and Aramaic for the first time by the author.
The issue of abortion is a sensitive and controversial one. It raises questions and dilemmas from many different areas. The issue also often comes up on the public agenda all over the world. This article discusses the status of abortion according to Judaism. In it, the author analyzes various sources of Judaism on the subject of abortion, from the written Torah to the Oral Torah, which includes the literature of the Talmud, the Mishna, the Midrash and late rabbinic literature. In addition to the theoretical and analytical discussion of the abstract principles underlying the issue of abortion, the author deals with the practical aspect, the attitude of Jewish law to abortion in various cases, from cases in which the reasons for the abortion are related to the mother, such as physical or mental danger to the mother’s life, that derive directly or indirectly from the pregnancy to cases where the reason for abortion is related to the fetus, such as a defect in the fetus that could result from the mother’s medical condition or an inherited disease of the fetus or cases where the abortion is caused by an external factor resulting from a socioeconomic situation, rape, prostitution or incest. In the final part of the article, the author explores the issue of abortion during the Holocaust.

Much of this literature has been translated into Croatian from Hebrew and Aramaic for the first time by the author.
In this article the author analyses one of the most interesting stories in the Bible, the affair of King David and Bat-Sheba according to sources from rabbinic literature. King David was a king, a spiritual lider, composer of Psalms, a great Torah scholar, the progenitor of the Jewish kingly dynasty and, according to the Jewish tradition, even the Messiah is supposed to be his descendant. However, according to the biblical story, David sinned severely. He committed sins of adultery and murder of an innocent, sins that don’t fit his image. The main task of this work is to explain, based on rabbinic literature, what exactly happened. Did king David fall from heavenly hights into a deep pit? The first part of the article consists of a general introduction, followed by a review of the biblical episode. The central part of this article is the Sages’ interpretation of king David and Bat Sheba affair, discussing the relationship between Uriah and Bat Sheba and the question of the adultery, followed by an analysis of the sin and punishment and various questions it raises. The author uses many sources from the rabbinical literature since Talmudic times through the middle Ages until modern times. Much of this literature is translated into Croatian from Hebrew and Aramaic for the first time by the author.
In this article the author analyses the special bond between the Jewish people and the Holy Land. The Jewish people emigrated numerous times during their permanent pilgrimage towards the “Promised Land”. These pilgrimages helped to build, form and maintain the Jewish national identity during the most difficult moments of the long Exile.
The first part of the article consists of a general introduction, followed by the main descriptions of immigration and emigration in the history of the Jewish people. The central part of this article deals with two main issues: the first one is the Jewish theological importance of immigration and emigration of the Jews as a sign of Divine providence and the implementation of the idea of reward and punishment that expresses the fulfilment of the prophecies written in the Torah and the books of the Jewish Prophets about the harsh Exile, the destruction of the Promised Land and its barrenness during the time of the Exile, as well as the return of the people of Israel to the Promised Land. The second issue is the love and longing for Zion in the Jewish national collective, where the author shows how the Bible and the spiritual leaders, the Rabbis, helped the nation relieve the pain of the Exile by establishing different holidays, customs and prayers to strengthen the collective national memory and keep going the hope for the ingathering of the Exiles, the building of Jerusalem and the Temple and the coming of the Messiah. The last part of this article explores some of the crises, which the Jewish people faced on their long and hard way to Zion. In this paper, the author uses many sources from the rabbinical literature since Talmudic times through the middle Ages until modern times. Much of this literature is translated into Croatian from Hebrew and Aramaic for the first time by the author.
In this article the authors analyse the importance of the study of the Old Testament in its original language, Biblical Hebrew. The first part of the article consists of a general introduction ...followed by the explanation of the main linguistic differences between Biblical and Modern Hebrew, as one of the factors contributing to the difficulty of understanding the Bible even for native Israelis. This part ends with a brief description of the first Modern Hebrew translation of the Bible and the intentions behind this translation, as presented by the translator and the publisher.
The central part of this article discusses the following issues: the need of a translation of the Bible from Biblical Hebrew into modern spoken Hebrew, the importance of the Bible and the Biblical text, continues with a general introduction to translation, provides arguments in favour and against the translation of the text from Biblical Hebrew into Modern spoken Hebrew or other languages. The end of this part exposes the difficulties involved in Bible translation, providing examples of major problems in the translation of the Bible. In this context, the background of Torah translations into Aramaic is explained.
Finally, in the conclusion, the authors give their recommendations for the school curriculum in Croatia, based on their experiences as teachers and parents. In their work, the authors use many sources from the rabbinical literature since the Talmudic time through the Middle Ages until modern times. Much of this literature is translated into Croatian from Hebrew and Aramaic for the first time by the authors.
U ovom članku autor iz perspektive tradicionalnog židovskog tumačenja istražuje pozadinu i unutarnje značenje Psalma 69 i poglavlja 16 u Prvoj knjizi o Samuelu.
