Endoscopic characteristic features of 16 lesions in 14 cases of elevated atypical epithelium and 16 lesions from 15 cases of IIa type early gastric cancer which were found during the past 6 years at ...Kitasato Univ. Hospital, were studied. The results are as follows: 1) Most of these lesions were located in the autrum and atypical epithelia were not found in the corpus. 2) Most of atypical epithelia were less than 2.0 cm in diameter, but IIa type early gastric cancer were over 2.0 cm in diameter on the contrary 3) Color of the atypical epithelium is usually pale or the same as the surrounding mucosa. But II a type early gastric canser appeared rather reddish. 4) The f ormers had no erosions on their surface, but the latter had erosions in most cases. 5) Shape as well as surface appearance of both lesions more clousely related to the size itself rather than their histologieal features. In addition, the differance of the mucosal discolorations of both lesions from the endoscopic point of view were investigated histologically. Many features such as the number of the vessels in a lesion, cystic dilatation of the gastric glands, hyperemia, congestion and erosions were compared between those lesions. Cystic dilatation of the gastric glands appeared pale or similar to the surrounding mucosa, having less or the same vessels in number as the surroundings. However, atypical epithelium appearing reddish had relation not only with the number of vessels but also with erosions, hyperemia and congesion.
