We report on multifrequency observations performed during 2012 December-2013 August of the first narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy detected in gamma rays, PMN J0948+0022 (z equal to 0.5846). A gamma-ray ...flare was observed by the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi during 2012 December-2013 January, reaching a daily peak flux in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range of (155 plus or minus 31)×10(exp −8) ph cm (exp −2) s (exp −1) on 2013 January 1, corresponding to an apparent isotropic luminosity of approximately 1.5×10)exp 48) erg s(exp −1). The gamma-ray flaring period triggered Swift and VERITAS observations in addition to radio and optical monitoring by OVRO, MOJAVE, and CRTS. A strong flare was observed in optical, UV, and X- rays on 2012 December 30, quasi-simultaneously to the gamma-ray flare, reaching a record flux for this source from optical to gamma rays. VERITAS observations at very high energy (E greater than 100 GeV) during 2013 January 6-17 resulted in an upper limit of F(sub greater than 0.2 TeV) less than 4.0 × 10(exp −12) ph cm(exp −2) s(exp −1). We compared the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the flaring state in 2013 January with that of an intermediate state observed in 2011. The two SEDs, modelled as synchrotron emission and an external Compton scattering of seed photons from a dust torus, can be modelled by changing both the electron distribution parameters and the magnetic field.
The future surface mass balance (SMB) will influence the ice dynamics and the contribution of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) to the sea level rise. Most of recent Antarctic SMB projections were based ...on the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). However, new CMIP6 results have revealed a +1.3 ∘C higher mean Antarctic near-surface temperature than in CMIP5 at the end of the 21st century, enabling estimations of future SMB in warmer climates. Here, we investigate the AIS sensitivity to different warmings with an ensemble of four simulations performed with the polar regional climate model Modèle Atmosphérique Régional (MAR) forced by two CMIP5 and two CMIP6 models over 1981–2100. Statistical extrapolation enables us to expand our results to the whole CMIP5 and CMIP6 ensembles. Our results highlight a contrasting effect on the future grounded ice sheet and the ice shelves. The SMB over grounded ice is projected to increase as a response to stronger snowfall, only partly offset by enhanced meltwater run-off. This leads to a cumulated sea-level-rise mitigation (i.e. an increase in surface mass) of the grounded Antarctic surface by 5.1 ± 1.9 cm sea level equivalent (SLE) in CMIP5-RCP8.5 (Relative Concentration Pathway 8.5) and 6.3 ± 2.0 cm SLE in CMIP6-ssp585 (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways 585). Additionally, the CMIP6 low-emission ssp126 and intermediate-emission ssp245 scenarios project a stabilized surface mass gain, resulting in a lower mitigation to sea level rise than in ssp585. Over the ice shelves, the strong run-off increase associated with higher temperature is projected to decrease the SMB (more strongly in CMIP6-ssp585 compared to CMIP5-RCP8.5). Ice shelves are however predicted to have a close-to-present-equilibrium stable SMB under CMIP6 ssp126 and ssp245 scenarios. Future uncertainties are mainly due to the sensitivity to anthropogenic forcing and the timing of the projected warming. While ice shelves should remain at a close-to-equilibrium stable SMB under the Paris Agreement, MAR projects strong SMB decrease for an Antarctic near-surface warming above +2.5 ∘C compared to 1981–2010 mean temperature, limiting the warming range before potential irreversible damages on the ice shelves. Finally, our results reveal the existence of a potential threshold (+7.5 ∘C) that leads to a lower grounded-SMB increase. This however has to be confirmed in following studies using more extreme or longer future scenarios.

Principal component analysis (PCA) has proved to be a powerful technique for processing NMR data. It is particularly useful in signal quantitation where it often provides better results compared to a direct integration of individual signals. In the present work, we recapitulate the principles and theoretical framework underlying PCA-based quantitation with a special focus on T1 relaxometry. We show that under commonly encountered conditions, this approach can provide up to ~4-fold improvement in scatter of points in magnetization build-up curves compared to direct integration. Best practices to optimize the PCA performance in measuring the total magnetization are discussed, including minimization of the number of signal-related principal components and a proper selection of FT parameters and data quantitation intervals. For signals consisting of distinct relaxation components, formulas are provided for resolving the components relaxation and illustrated on a real-data example. In addition to the problem of quantitation, the use of PCA in denoising of partially relaxed spectra is discussed in connection with such applications as line shape analysis and monitoring relaxation of individual spectral components.
Density estimation is a versatile technique underlying many data mining tasks and techniques, ranging from exploration and presentation of static data, to probabilistic classification, or identifying ...changes or irregularities in streaming data. With the pervasiveness of embedded systems and digitisation, this latter type of streaming and evolving data becomes more important. Nevertheless, research in density estimation has so far focused on stationary data, leaving the task of of extrapolating and predicting density at time points outside a training window an open problem. For this task, temporal density extrapolation (TDX) is proposed. This novel method models and predicts gradual monotonous changes in a distribution. It is based on the expansion of basis functions, whose weights are modelled as functions of compositional data over time by using an isometric log-ratio transformation. Extrapolated density estimates are then obtained by extrapolating the weights to the requested time point, and querying the density from the basis functions with back-transformed weights. Our approach aims for broad applicability by neither being restricted to a specific parametric distribution, nor relying on cluster structure in the data. It requires only two additional extrapolation-specific parameters, for which reasonable defaults exist. Experimental evaluation on various data streams, synthetic as well as from the real-world domains of credit scoring and environmental health, shows that the model manages to capture monotonous drift patterns accurately and better than existing methods. Thereby, it requires not more than 1.5 times the run time of a corresponding static density estimation approach.
Violations of Lorentz invariance can lead to an energy-dependent vacuum dispersion of light, which results in arrival-time differences of photons with different energies arising from a given ...transient source. In this work, direction-dependent dispersion constraints are obtained on nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating effects using the observed spectral lags of the gamma-ray burst GRB 160625B. This burst has unusually large high-energy photon statistics, so we can obtain constraints from the true spectral time lags of bunches of high-energy photons rather than from the rough time lag of a single highest-energy photon. Also, GRB 160625B is the only burst to date having a well-defined transition from positive lags to negative lags, providing a unique opportunity to distinguish Lorentz-violating effects from any source-intrinsic time lag in the emission of photons of different energy bands. Our results place comparatively robust two-sided constraints on a variety of isotropic and anisotropic coefficients for Lorentz violation, including the first bounds on Lorentz-violating effects from operators of mass dimension 10 in the photon sector.
The trajectories of a mission to an asteroid with the presence of a spacecraft (SC) near the asteroid for some time and including a return to the Earth have been studied. A two-stage method of ...constructing optimum (with respect to the maximum of the useful SC mass) interplanetary trajectories for an Earth–asteroid–Earth mission with high thrust engines has been developed: in the central Newtonian field of the Sun’s attraction at the first stage and with allowance for perturbations at the second stage. An algorithm of constructing conjugate functions for the case of maximizing the useful mass has been designed. The optimum trajectories for the Earth–Apophis–Earth mission have been constructed and analyzed. The possibility in principle of organizing the Earth–Apophis–Earth space mission based on the Soyuz and Zenit launch vehicles and Fregat upper stage for a flight in 2019–2022 has been demonstrated.
Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A small proportion of HF cases are attributable to monogenic cardiomyopathies and existing genome-wide association studies ...(GWAS) have yielded only limited insights, leaving the observed heritability of HF largely unexplained. We report results from a GWAS meta-analysis of HF comprising 47,309 cases and 930,014 controls. Twelve independent variants at 11 genomic loci are associated with HF, all of which demonstrate one or more associations with coronary artery disease (CAD), atrial fibrillation, or reduced left ventricular function, suggesting shared genetic aetiology. Functional analysis of non-CAD-associated loci implicate genes involved in cardiac development (MYOZ1, SYNPO2L), protein homoeostasis (BAG3), and cellular senescence (CDKN1A). Mendelian randomisation analysis supports causal roles for several HF risk factors, and demonstrates CAD-independent effects for atrial fibrillation, body mass index, and hypertension. These findings extend our knowledge of the pathways underlying HF and may inform new therapeutic strategies.
Local recurrence (LR) in osteosarcoma is associated with very poor prognosis. We sought to evaluate which factors correlate with LR in patients who achieved complete surgical remission with adequate ...margins.
We analyzed 1355 patients with previously untreated high-grade central osteosarcoma of the extremities, the shoulder and the pelvis registered in neoadjuvant Cooperative Osteosarcoma Study Group trials between 1986 and 2005. Seventy-six patients developed LR.
Median follow-up was 5.56 years. No participation in a study, pelvic tumor site, limb-sparing surgery, soft tissue infiltration beyond the periosteum, poor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, failure to complete the planned chemotherapy protocol and biopsy at a center other than the one performing the tumor resection were significantly associated with a higher LR rate. No differences were found for varying surgical margin widths. Surgical treatment at centers with small patient volume and additional surgery in the primary tumor area, other than biopsy and tumor resection, were significantly associated with a higher rate of ablative surgery.
Patient enrollment in clinical trials and performing the biopsy at experienced institutions capable of undertaking the tumor resection without compromising the oncological and functional outcome should be pursued in the future.
We report on a search for particle dark matter with the XENON100 experiment, operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso for 13 months during 2011 and 2012. XENON100 features an ultralow ...electromagnetic background of (5.3 ± 0.6) × 10(-3) events/(keV(ee) × kg × day) in the energy region of interest. A blind analysis of 224.6 live days × 34 kg exposure has yielded no evidence for dark matter interactions. The two candidate events observed in the predefined nuclear recoil energy range of 6.6-30.5 keV(nr) are consistent with the background expectation of (1.0 ± 0.2) events. A profile likelihood analysis using a 6.6-43.3 keV(nr) energy range sets the most stringent limit on the spin-independent elastic weakly interacting massive particle-nucleon scattering cross section for weakly interacting massive particle masses above 8 GeV/c(2), with a minimum of 2 × 10(-45) cm(2) at 55 GeV/c(2) and 90% confidence level.
