In commemoration of Babylonia’s 30 years of valuable contributions, the following materials are intented to be used with pre-service teachers as prompts for discussions and ideas for creative ...teaching. The first stems from Piepho’s 1993 work that encourages the use of learning styles in the classroom which nowadays we might look upon slightly more cricitally. The second, based on Putzer’s 1991 article on assessment, shows how we teachers are still struggling to assess holistically and functionally in today’s classrooms, so there nothing much has changed.

Language games are fantastic for introducing not-so-beloved language topics like grammar and spelling to students. The Body Grammar game, as the name implies, gets learners moving by having them ...stand in place and then moving as the game progresses. It is suitable for all school ages and can be used in all language subjects as the level and the degree of differentiation can be adapted to any level or language.
Avec cet hommage à Ruth Bader Ginsburg, la rédaction de Babylonia vous accueille dans sa nouvelle rubrique : les Amuse-bouche didactiques - Praxis-Gluschterli - Unterrichtshäppchen - spuntini ...didattici - buccadinas didacticas ! Nous débutons l’année par un numéro sur la justice sociale et les droits des femmes où nous partageons des leçons testées à Zurich en anglais et faciles à transposer pour d’autres langues.
Elementary school English language teachers in Swiss public schools often question the role of writing in early years language instruction because there is a significant disparity in messages they ...receive from Board of Education members, from fellow teachers and from teacher trainers. This study describes the issues concerning writing in the first years of English language instruction in Switzerland and presents data that suggest that teaching reading, writing, listening and speaking in every lesson is associated with better learner performance in writing (and the other skills) than teaching with a different balance of skills. A general writing rubric and some recommendations for writing with young learners in the Swiss setting are provided and the argument is made that teachers should indeed start with writing in the first year of English language instruction.
With this issue, we hope to provide you with some new glasses with which to see materials you are working with and provide you with research to support the idea that we need to consider the messages ...we are promoting.
We hope you enjoy our first Open Access issue!
