Cognitive impairment in schizophrenia involves a broad array of nonsocial and social cognitive domains. It is a core feature of the illness, and one with substantial implications for treatment and ...prognosis. Our understanding of the causes, consequences and interventions for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia has grown substantially in recent years. Here we review a range of topics, including: a) the types of nonsocial cognitive, social cognitive, and perceptual deficits in schizophrenia; b) how deficits in schizophrenia are similar or different from those in other disorders; c) cognitive impairments in the prodromal period and over the lifespan in schizophrenia; d) neuroimaging of the neural substrates of nonsocial and social cognition, and e) relationships of nonsocial and social cognition to functional outcome. The paper also reviews the considerable efforts that have been directed to improve cognitive impairments in schizophrenia through novel psychopharmacology, cognitive remediation, social cognitive training, and alternative approaches. In the final section, we consider areas that are emerging and have the potential to provide future insights, including the interface of motivation and cognition, the influence of childhood adversity, metacognition, the role of neuroinflammation, computational modelling, the application of remote digital technology, and novel methods to evaluate brain network organization. The study of cognitive impairment has provided a way to approach, examine and comprehend a wide range of features of schizophrenia, and it may ultimately affect how we define and diagnose this complex disorder.
Internet of Things (IoT) devices are increasingly being found in civilian and military contexts, ranging from smart cities and smart grids to Internet-of-Medical-Things, Internet-of-Vehicles, ...Internet-of-Military-Things, Internet-of-Battlefield-Things, etc. In this paper, we survey articles presenting IoT security solutions published in English since January 2016. We make a number of observations, including the lack of publicly available IoT datasets that can be used by the research and practitioner communities. Given the potentially sensitive nature of IoT datasets, there is a need to develop a standard for sharing IoT datasets among the research and practitioner communities and other relevant stakeholders. Thus, we posit the potential for blockchain technology in facilitating secure sharing of IoT datasets (e.g., using blockchain to ensure the integrity of shared datasets) and securing IoT systems, before presenting two conceptual blockchain-based approaches. We then conclude this paper with nine potential research questions. Keywords: Blockchain, Blockchain security, Collaborative security, Internet-of-military things, IoT dataset, IoT self-healing, IoT security, Intrusion-prevention system, Predictive IoT security, Predictive security
ABSTRACTWith the increasing frequency of extreme events, daily gross primary productivity (GPP) is necessary to be accurately assessed to determine when and how much it is affected. Fluctuating ...environmental conditions contribute to diverse diurnal photosynthetic patterns influenced by changing atmospheric factors, including solar radiation, CO2 concentrations, and leaf temperature. This complexity underscores the challenge of accurately estimating daily GPP. We quantitatively assessed three temporal upscaling approaches – cosine of the solar zenith angle, extraterrestrial solar irradiance, and photosynthetic active radiation(PAR) – under varying sky conditions. Additionally, we introduced a novel correction method for universal temporal upscaling ratios. Instantaneous GPP values from the FLUXNET2015 dataset, acquired around the MODIS overpassing time, were utilized. The upscaled daily GPP exhibited minimal deviation from the half-hourly GPPs collected between 11 am and 1 pm, with increased discrepancies for GPPs later in the afternoon. The PAR-based approach demonstrated superior accuracy in the afternoon, effectively capturing incoming radiation changes due to clouds. Instant environmental variables-GPP relationships were weak under clear skies but exhibited moderate-to-high positive correlations under cloudy conditions. Analyzing the impact of the diffuse ratio of incoming photosynthetic active radiation on instantaneous GPP revealed limited enhancement at short time scales. On a daily scale, all three temporal upscaling approaches, under different ranges of clearness index, consistently underestimated daily GPP. We proposed a novel correction method, normalizing the difference between maximum and minimum air temperature in a day, notably reduced errors by approximately 10.69 and 21.07 gC m−2 d−1 for cosine of the solar zenith angle and extraterrestrial solar irradiance-based temporal upscaling approaches. We recommend adopting the corrected temporal upscaling factor globally due to its simplicity and improved accuracy.
As satellite launching increases worldwide, uncertainty quantification for satellite data becomes essential. Misunderstanding satellite data uncertainties can lead to misinterpretations of natural ...phenomena, emphasizing the importance of validation. In this study, we established a tower-based network equipped with multispectral sensors, SD-500 and SD-600, to validate the satellite-derived NDVI product. Multispectral sensors were installed at eight long-term ecological monitoring sites managed by NIFoS. High correlations were observed between both multispectral sensors and a hyperspectral sensor, with correlations of 0.76 and 0.92, respectively, indicating that the calibration between SD-500 and SD-600 was unnecessary. High correlations, 0.8 to 0.96, between the tower-based NDVI with Sentinel-2 NDVI, were observed at most sites, while lower correlations at Anmyeon-do, Jeju, and Wando highlighting challenges in evergreen forests, likely due to shadows in complex canopy structures. In future research, we aim to analyze the uncertainties of surface reflectance in evergreen forests and develop a biome-specific validation protocol starting from site selection. Especially, the integration of tower, drone, and satellite data is expected to provide insights into the effect of complex forest structures on different spatial scales. This study could offer insights for CAS500-4 and other satellite validations, thereby enhancing our understanding of diverse ecological conditions.
Ransomware is a growing concern in business and government because it causes immediate financial damages or loss of important data. There is a way to detect and block ransomware in advance, but ...evolved ransomware can still attack while avoiding detection. Another alternative is to back up the original data. However, existing backup solutions can be under the control of ransomware and backup copies can be destroyed by ransomware. Moreover, backup methods incur storage and performance overhead. In this article, we propose AMOEBA, a device-level backup solution that does not require additional storage for backup. AMOEBA is armed with: 1) a hardware accelerator to run content-based detection algorithms for ransomware detection at high speed and 2) a fine-grained backup control mechanism to minimize space overhead for data backup. For evaluations, we not only implemented AMOEBA using the Microsoft solid-state drive (SSD) simulator but also prototyped it on the OpenSSD-platform. Our extensive evaluations with real ransomware workloads show that AMOEBA has high ransomware detection accuracy with negligible performance overhead.
This research investigates various factors of social capital, media use and demographics that may have an influence on online community use. Although some have argued that internet use may erode an ...individual’s social capital, this study found that people who access the internet for online community use tend to have more sociability and higher levels of generalized norm than do online community non-users.When important socio-psychological factors of social capital, such as trust and life contentment, were considered, however, social capital was not fully related to online community use. In this regard, it is suggested that online communities may enhance the communication ability of individuals due to technological advantages, but face-to-face communication in the form of the traditional community is still essential to ensure the quality of community as a whole.
This study aimed to determine the relative extent of impairment in social and nonsocial cognitive domains in patients with bipolar disorder compared with schizophrenia patients and healthy comparison ...subjects.
Sixty-eight clinically stable outpatients with bipolar disorder, 38 clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia, and 36 healthy comparison subjects completed a range of social (facial affect perception, emotional regulation, empathic accuracy, mental state attribution, and self-referential memory) and nonsocial (speed of processing, attention/vigilance, working memory, verbal memory, visual memory, and reasoning/problem solving) cognitive tasks.
For each social cognitive task, patients with bipolar disorder did not differ significantly from comparison subjects, and both groups performed better than schizophrenia patients. Within the bipolar group, clinical features and medication status were not related to social cognitive performance. Bipolar patients showed performance patterns across tasks (i.e., profiles) that were similar to those of comparison subjects on both social and nonsocial cognitive domains, whereas both groups differed from schizophrenia patients for both domains. Regarding relative impairment across the two cognitive domains, results revealed a significant group-by-domain interaction in which bipolar patients showed less impaired social than nonsocial cognition, while schizophrenia patients showed the opposite pattern.
Bipolar patients showed less impairment on social relative to nonsocial cognitive performance, whereas schizophrenia patients showed more impairment on social relative to nonsocial cognitive performance. These results suggest that these two cognitive domains play different roles in bipolar disorder compared with in schizophrenia.
Summary
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly. Despite decades of study, effective treatments for AD are lacking. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been closely linked ...to the pathogenesis of AD, but the relationship between mitochondrial pathology and neuronal damage is poorly understood. Sirtuins (SIRT, silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog in yeast) are NAD‐dependent histone deacetylases involved in aging and longevity. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between SIRT3 and mitochondrial function and neuronal activity in AD. SIRT3 mRNA and protein levels were significantly decreased in AD cerebral cortex, and Ac‐p53 K320 was significantly increased in AD mitochondria. SIRT3 prevented p53‐induced mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal damage in a deacetylase activity‐dependent manner. Notably, mitochondrially targeted p53 (mito‐p53) directly reduced mitochondria DNA‐encoded ND2 and ND4 gene expression resulting in increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced mitochondrial oxygen consumption. ND2 and ND4 gene expressions were significantly decreased in patients with AD. p53‐ChIP analysis verified the presence of p53‐binding elements in the human mitochondrial genome and increased p53 occupancy of mitochondrial DNA in AD. SIRT3 overexpression restored the expression of ND2 and ND4 and improved mitochondrial oxygen consumption by repressing mito‐p53 activity. Our results indicate that SIRT3 dysfunction leads to p53‐mediated mitochondrial and neuronal damage in AD. Therapeutic modulation of SIRT3 activity may ameliorate mitochondrial pathology and neurodegeneration in AD.
Impaired social functioning is pervasive in schizophrenia. Unfortunately, existing treatments have limited efficacy, and possible psychological or neurobiological mechanisms underlying social ...dysfunction in this disorder remain obscure. Here, we evaluate whether social preference, one key aspect of social processing that has been largely overlooked in schizophrenia research, and N -methyl- d -aspartate receptor (NMDAR) dysfunction can provide insights into the mechanism underlying social dysfunction in schizophrenia. Based on evidence from developmental psychology, and behavioral and clinical neuroscience, we propose a heuristic model in which reduced NMDAR function may induce disrupted social preference that can subsequently lead to social cognitive impairment and social disability. We discuss its implications in terms of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, other disorders with marked social disability, and potential treatments.
Impulsive risk taking contributes to deleterious outcomes among clinical populations. Indeed, pathological impulsivity and risk taking are common in patients with serious mental illness, and have ...severe clinical repercussions including novelty seeking, response disinhibition, aggression, and substance abuse. Thus, the current study seeks to examine self-reported impulsivity (Barratt Impulsivity Scale) and performance-based behavioral risk taking (Balloon Analogue Risk Task) in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Participants included 68 individuals with bipolar disorder, 38 with schizophrenia, and 36 healthy controls. Self-reported impulsivity was elevated in the bipolar group compared with schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, who did not differ from each other. On the risk-taking task, schizophrenia patients were significantly more risk averse than the bipolar patients and controls. Aside from the diagnostic group differences, there was a significant effect of antipsychotic (AP) medication within the bipolar group: bipolar patients taking AP medications were more risk averse than those not taking AP medications. This difference in risk taking because of AP medications was not explained by history of psychosis. Similarly, the differences in risk taking between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were not fully explained by AP effects. Implications for clinical practice and future research are discussed.
