Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are a kind of emerging contaminants, but the information about their pollution profile and ecological risk are still scarce in China. In this study, 31 surface water ...samples of Haihe River (China) were collected in November 2017, and 11 OPEs were measured, and the ecological risk of OPEs was assessed by means of species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method and assessment factor method. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis and an international comparison with other rivers in the world were conducted. The results showed that total OPEs ranged from 23.98 to 824.72 ng L
−1
, and the mean value was 228.70 ng L
−1
. The concentration of OPEs decreased as follows: Tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) > Tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) > Triethyl phosphate (TEP) > Tributoxyethyl phosphate (TBEP) > Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) > Tripropyl phosphate (TPrP) > Tri(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) > 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) > Tri(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TDCPP) > Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) > Tri-m-cresyl phosphate (TMPP). TCPP (19.54–160.82 ng L
−1
) and TCEP (N.D.-151.99 ng L
−1
) with the mean value of 76.67 and 53.13 ng L
−1
respectively were identified as the richest OPEs in Haihe River. The concentration of OPEs slowly increased in the upper reaches of Haihe River, and it tended to be stable in the middle reaches of Haihe River and decreased rapidly from the downstream to the outer sea. Significantly positive correlations occurred among three chlorinated alkyl OPEs (TCEP, TCPP, and TDCPP), suggesting that they might come from the same source. Based on the comparison, the pollution condition of OPEs in Haihe River was low, and TCEP was found to be the most abundant OPEs in China but it was not that in Europe. The ecological risk assessment on the basis of assessment factor method suggested that the risk of OPEs in Haihe River for algae, crustacean, and fish was limited. In addition, the results of SSD method suggested that the combined ecological risk of four OPEs in Haihe River was also low. This study provides information about the pollution status of OPEs in the surface water of China to some extents and a project for the risk estimation based on SSD for prior and emerging flame retardants.
Pyroptosis is a highly specific type of inflammatory programmed cell death that is mediated by Gasdermine (GSDM). It is characterized by inflammasome activation, caspase activation, and cell membrane ...pore formation. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the leading diabetic complications and is a critical cause of fatalities in chronic diabetic patients, it is defined as a clinical condition of abnormal myocardial structure and performance in diabetic patients without other cardiac risk factors, such as hypertension, significant valvular disease, etc. There are no specific drugs in treating DCM despite decades of basic and clinical investigations. Although the relationship between DCM and pyroptosis is not well established yet, current studies provided the impetus for us to clarify the significance of pyroptosis in DCM. In this review, we summarize the recent literature addressing the role of pyroptosis and the inflammasome in the development of DCM and summary the potential use of approaches targeting this pathway which may be future anti-DCM strategies.
Naringenin (NG), a flavanone extracted from various plants, has potent vasoprotective effects likely related to the induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). In the current study, we investigated ...mechanisms underlying the effect of NG on HO-1 expression and high glucose (HG)- or free fatty acids (FFA)-induced apoptosis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). First, we found that HUVECs exposed to NG exhibited enhanced HO-1 expression in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Moreover, HUVECs treated with NG exhibited activation of phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3K)/Akt, extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK), and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). LY294002 (a PI3K inhibitor) and SP600125 (a JNK inhibitor) reduced NG-induced HO-1 expression, whereas BIRB796 (a p38 inhibitor) and PD98059 (an ERK inhibitor) had no effect. The cytoprotective effects of NG were correlated with activation of the transcription factor NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a critical regulator of HO-1 expression. Indeed, the results of our experiments using LY294002 and SP600125 indicated that NG may stimulate Nrf2 through PI3K/Akt and JNK pathway activation. Moreover, treatment of HUVECs with Nrf2 siRNA decreased NG-induced HO-1 expression. Finally, pretreatment of HUVECs with NG remarkably reduced HG- or FFA-induced cell apoptosis, and this effect was greatly abrogated in the presence of SnPP (an HO-1 inhibitor). Above all, our data show that NG increased HO-1 expression and reduced HG- or FFA-induced cell apoptosis in HUVECs by upregulating PI3K, JNK, and Nrf2 pathways, which may confer an adaptive survival response in diabetes-induced vascular injury.
•The present study provides the first experimental evidence that Naringenin attenuated high glucose or free fatty acids-mediated apoptosis dependent on HO-1 activation in human umbilical vascular endothelial cells.•Naringenin activated HO-1 through the PI3K and JNK/Nrf2 pathway in vascular endothelial cells.•Naringenin may be considered a potential endothelium protection agent when blood vessel exposure to high glucose environment.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) eventually leads to chronic vascular complications, resulting in cardiovascular diseases. DM-associated endothelial dysfunction (ED) plays an important role in the development ...of chronic vascular complications. Low endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity, inflammation, and oxidative stress all contribute to ED. The G protein-coupled receptor Takeda G protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) is a membrane receptor for bile acids that plays an important role in the regulation of glucose metabolism. Recent studies have shown that TGR5 is involved in the regulation of various mediators of ED, which suggests that TGR5 may represent a target for the treatment of DM-associated ED. In this review, we summarize the principal mechanisms of DM-associated ED, then propose TGR5 as a novel therapeutic target on the basis of its mechanistic involvement, and suggest potential directions for future research.
Fibrosis is the final common pathology of most chronic diseases as seen in the heart, liver, lung, kidney, and skin and contributes to nearly half of death in the developed countries. Fibrosis, or ...scarring, is mainly characterized by the transdifferentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts and the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) secreted by myofibroblasts. Despite immense efforts made in the field of organ fibrosis over the past decades and considerable understanding of the occurrence and development of fibrosis gained, there is still lack of an effective treatment for fibrotic diseases. Therefore, identifying a new therapeutic strategy against organ fibrosis is an unmet clinical need. Naringenin, a flavonoid that occurs naturally in citrus fruits, has been found to confer a wide range of pharmacological effects including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer benefits and thus potentially exerting preventive and curative effects on numerous diseases. In addition, emerging evidence has revealed that naringenin can prevent the pathogenesis of fibrosis in vivo and in vitro via the regulation of various pathways that involved signaling molecules such as transforming growth factor-β1/small mother against decapentaplegic protein 3 (TGF-β1/Smad3), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt), sirtuin1 (SIRT1), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), or reactive oxygen species (ROS). Targeting these profibrotic pathways by naringenin could potentially become a novel therapeutic approach for the management of fibrotic disorders. In this review, we present a comprehensive summary of the antifibrotic roles of naringenin in vivo and in vitro and their underlying mechanisms of action. As a food derived compound, naringenin may serve as a promising drug candidate for the treatment of fibrotic disorders.
The properties of chaos time delay signature (TDS) in a ring network consisting of three mutually coupled semiconductor lasers (MCSLs) are investigated numerically, where heterogeneous coupling ...delays are proposed to obtain the TDS concealment from the intensity chaos in wide parameter regions. The evolution of the TDS patterns, which are quantified via the autocorrelation function, for a ring network with identical coupling delays as well as that with heterogeneous coupling delays is compared. By analyzing the effects of the coupling strength, frequency detuning, and injection current on the TDS, the parameter regions for successful TDS concealment are identified. It is found that the intensity chaos with a desirable TDS concealment can be generated in the proposed ring network in which the TDS is mainly affected by the injection current and coupling strength, but is not so sensitive to the frequency detuning. In particular, a larger injection current and smaller coupling strength are preferable to obtain chaos with a low TDS. Besides, the ring network with heterogeneous coupling delays allows for better TDS concealment in much wider parameter regions, compared to that with identical coupling delays, and, thus, is highly desirable for the chaos-based random bit generators.
Smoked meat and meat products represent a significant part of the daily diet in south-west China and many other parts of the world. In this study, we evaluated the health risks of long-term exposure ...to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a daily low dose exposures (from intake of PAH-containing smoked meats) in south-west China for eight groups of people based on a Monte Carlo simulation. Total concentrations of PAHs in smoked meats from south-west China ranged from 14.4 to 56.3μgkg−1. The 95th percentile carcinogenic risk (CR) values of eight groups in four cities and provinces were lower than the acceptable value (1.00E-5), indicating no significant risk. The 95th percentile Hazard Index (HI) values were below 1, suggesting no obvious non-carcinogenic effects developed. This study was the first attempt to provide information on the potential health risk for daily intake of PAH-containing smoked meat.
•Health risk from intake of PAH-containing smoked meat in China was studied.•Carcinogenic risk is below the acceptable level from smoked meat consumption.•Non-carcinogenic risk values were lower than 1, suggesting no risk.
Sedentary behavior has been demonstrated to be a modifiable factor for several chronic diseases, while coffee consumption is believed to be beneficial for health. However, the joint associations of ...daily sitting time and coffee consumption with mortality remains poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the independent and joint associations of daily sitting time and coffee intakes with mortality from all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among US adults.
An analysis of a prospective cohort from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of US adults (n = 10,639). Data on mortality were compiled from interview and physical examination data until December 31, 2019. Daily sitting time was self-reported. Coffee beverages were from the 24-hour diet recall interview. The main outcomes of the study were all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. The adjusted hazard ratios HRs and 95% confidence intervals CI were imputed by Cox proportional hazards regression.
Among 10,639 participants in the study cohort, there were 945 deaths, 284 of whom died of CVD during the follow-up period of up to 13 years. Multivariable models showed that sitting more than 8 h/d was associated with higher risks of all-cause (HR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.17-1.81) and CVD (HR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.21-2.66) mortality, compared with those sitting for less than 4 h/d. People with the highest quartile of coffee consumption were observed for the reduced risks of both all-cause (HR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.54-0.84) and CVD (HR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.30-0.69) mortality compared with non-coffee consumers. Notably, joint analyses firstly showed that non-coffee drinkers who sat six hours or more per day were 1.58 (95% CI, 1.25-1.99) times more likely to die of all causes than coffee drinkers sitting for less than six hours per day, indicating that the association of sedentary with increased mortality was only observed among adults with no coffee consumption but not among those who had coffee intake.
This study identified that sedentary behavior for more than 6 h/d accompanied with non-coffee consumption, were strongly associated with the increased risk of mortality from all-cause and CVD.
We present the constraints on the axial-vector and pseudo-scalar mediated WIMP-nucleus interactions from the PandaX-4T experiment, using the data set corresponding to a total exposure of 0.63 ...tonne⋅year. No significant signal excess is observed, and the most stringent constraints to date on the mediator mass are set for the axial-vector and pseudo-scalar simplified models. The maximum excluded mass of an axial-vector mediator is 825 GeV/c2 and that of a pseudo-scalar mediator is 106 GeV/c2. In addition, the upper limits on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section for conventional neutron-only and proton-only interactions are derived.
Due to the importance of accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment of this condition, the medical world is searching for a solution for its early detection and efficient treatment. Heart disease is one ...of the leading causes of death in modern society. With the development of computer science today, this issue can be resolved using computers. Data mining is one of the solutions for diagnosing this illness. One of the cutting-edge disciplines, data mining, can aid in better decision-making in many areas of medicine, including disease diagnosis and treatment. In order to improve diagnosis accuracy, a combination method using the evolutionary algorithms locust and support vector machine has been tested in this study. Use should be made of heart disease. Because of the hybrid nature of this approach, normalization is actually carried out in three steps: first, by using pre-processing operations to remove unknown and outlier data from the data set; second, by using the locust evolutionary algorithm to choose the best features from the available features; and third, by classifying the data set using a support vector machine. The accuracy criterion for the proposed method compared to Niobizin methods, neural networks, and J48 trees improved by 18 %, 30 %, and 24 %, respectively, after implementing it on the data set and comparing it with other algorithms used in the field of heart disease diagnosis.
