The abundances of trace elements including Sr, Ga and rare earth elements (REE) and halogens in apatite crystals from four intermediate-felsic plutons in the Zhongdian terrane in the Sanjiang region ...have been determined using electron microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to evaluate the potential of apatite as a petrogenic-metallogenic indicator. The selected plutons include one that is not mineralized (the Triassic Xiuwacu pluton, or the TXWC pluton), one that hosts a porphyry-type Cu deposit (the Pulang pluton, or the PL pluton), one that hosts a porphyry-type Mo deposit (the Tongchanggou pluton, or the TCG pluton), and one that hosts a vein-type Mo deposit (the Cretaceous Xiuwacu pluton, or the CXWC pluton). Except for the CXWC pluton, the other three plutons have adakite-like trace element signatures in whole rocks. The results from this study show that REE, Sr and halogens in apatite can be used to track magma compositions, oxidation states and crystallization history. Apatite crystals from the adakite-like plutons are characterized by much higher Sr/Y and δEu than the non-adakite-type pluton. This means that apatite, which is not susceptible to alteration, is a useful tool for identifying the adakite-like plutons that no longer preserve the initial Sr/Y ratios in whole rocks due to weathering and hydrothermal alteration. Based on apatite Ga contents and δEu values, it is inferred that the parental magmas for the two adakite-like plutons containing porphyry-type Cu and Mo mineralization are more oxidized than that for the non-adakite-type pluton containing vein-type Mo mineralization. Apatite crystals from the vein-type Mo deposit have much lower Cl/F ratios than those from the porphyry-type Cu and Mo deposits. Apatite crystals from the adakite-like pluton without Cu or Mo mineralization is characterized by much lower Cl/F ratios than those from the adakite-like plutons that host the porphyry-type Cu and Mo deposits. The results from this study confirm the apatite is a useful petrogenetic indicator as well as mineral exploration tool.

Twelve organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) were identified in the sediments and the sediment core collected from the rivers and the estuary in the Pearl River Delta, with the aim of ...investigating their spatial and vertical distributions. The concentrations of PFRs ranged from 8.3 to 470ng/g dry weight with high levels of PFRs in the urban area and the e-waste recycling region. Generally, TPhP, TCPP, TEHP, TCEP, and TBEP were the dominant compounds of the PFRs, the composition of which varied across the different regions, reflecting the different sources of PFRs. In the estuary, the PFRs mainly derived from the Xijiang River and the Shunde sections. Increased concentrations of halogen-containing PFRs have been observed in the upper layers of the sediment core. Conversely, relatively high concentrations of halogen-free PFRs were observed in the lower layers of the sediment core, indicating different usage patterns or environmental behaviors between the halogen and the non-halogen PFRs in the study area.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in plant growth and stress responses. As a dominant abiotic stress factor in soil, boron (B) deficiency stress has impacted the growth and ...development of citrus in the red soil region of southern China. In the present work, we performed a genome-wide identification and characterization of lncRNAs in response to B deficiency stress in the leaves of trifoliate orange (
), an important rootstock of citrus. A total of 2101 unique lncRNAs and 24,534 mRNAs were predicted. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) experiments were performed for a total of 16 random mRNAs and lncRNAs to validate their existence and expression patterns. Expression profiling of the leaves of trifoliate orange under B deficiency stress identified 729 up-regulated and 721 down-regulated lncRNAs, and 8419 up-regulated and 8395 down-regulated mRNAs. Further analysis showed that a total of 84 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) were up-regulated and 31 were down-regulated, where the number of up-regulated DELs was 2.71-fold that of down-regulated. A similar trend was also observed in differentially expressed mRNAs (DEMs, 4.21-fold). Functional annotation of these DEMs was performed using Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses, and the results demonstrated an enrichment of the categories of the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites (including phenylpropanoid biosynthesis/lignin biosynthesis), plant hormone signal transduction and the calcium signaling pathway. LncRNA target gene enrichment identified several target genes that were involved in plant hormones, and the expression of lncRNAs and their target genes was significantly influenced. Therefore, our results suggest that lncRNAs can regulate the metabolism and signal transduction of plant hormones, which play an important role in the responses of citrus plants to B deficiency stress. Co-expression network analysis indicated that 468 significantly differentially expressed genes may be potential targets of 90 lncRNAs, and a total of 838 matched lncRNA-mRNA pairs were identified. In summary, our data provides a rich resource of candidate lncRNAs and mRNAs, as well as their related pathways, thereby improving our understanding of the role of lncRNAs in response to B deficiency stress, and in symptom formation caused by B deficiency in the leaves of trifoliate orange.
Surface particulates collected from the workshop floors of three major e-waste recycling sites (Taizhou, Qingyuan, and Guiyu) in China were analyzed for tetrabromobisphenol A/S (TBBPA/S) and their ...derivatives to investigate the environmental pollution caused by e-waste recycling activities. Mean concentrations of total TBBPA/S analogs in surface particulates were 31,471–116,059 ng/g dry weight (dw). TBBPA, TBBPA-BGE, and TBBPA-BDBPE were the most frequently detected in particulates with average concentration ranges of 17,929–78,406, 5601–15,842, and 5929–21,383 ng/g dw, respectively. Meanwhile, TBBPA, TBBPA-BGE, and TBBPA-BDBPE were the most abundant TBBPA/S analogs, accounting for around 96% of the total. The composition profiles of TBBPA/S analogs differed significantly among three e-waste sites. Similarly, principal component analysis uncovered different pollution patterns among different sites. The discrepancy in the profiles of TBBPA/S analogs largely relied on the e-waste types recycled in different areas. E-waste recycling led to the release of TBBPA/S analogs, and TBBPA/S analogs produced differentiation during migration from source (surface particulates) to nearby soil. More researches are necessary to find a definite relationship between pollution status and e-waste types and study differentiation behavior of TBBPA/S analogs in migration and diffusion from source to environmental medium.

Tin and tungsten are important metals for the industrializing society. Deciphering the origin and evolution of hydrothermal fluids responsible for their formation is critical to underpin genetic ...models of ore formation. Traditional approaches obtain isotopic information mainly from bulk analysis of both ore and gangue minerals, or less frequently from in situ analysis of gangue minerals, which either bear inherited complexities and uncertainties or are indirect constraints. Hence, directly obtaining isotopic information from ore minerals such as cassiterite by in situ techniques is warranted. However, this has been hampered by challenges from both analytical and applicational aspects. O values both within a single deposit and among studied deposits. Combining the δ
18
O of cassiterite samples and the equilibrium oxygen isotope fractionation, we find that the δ
18
O values of ore-forming fluids show a strong magmatic affinity with variable but mostly no to low degree involvements (~0-10%) of meteoric water, hence our results invite a reassessment on the extent and role of meteoric water in Sn-W mineralization. This study demonstrates that in situ oxygen isotope analysis of cassiterite is a promising tool to refine sources of ore-forming fluids, and to decode hydrothermal dynamics controlling tin and tungsten mineralization.
A significant challenge that warrants attention is the influence of eutrophication on the biogeochemical cycle of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments. Antibiotics pollution in the ...eutrophic Pearl River in South China was examined to offer new insights into the effects of eutrophication on the occurrence, air–water exchange fluxes (Fair–water), and vertical sinking fluxes (Fsinking) of antibiotics. Antibiotics transferred to the atmosphere primarily through aerosolization controlled by phytoplankton biomass and significant spatiotemporal variations were observed in the Fair–water of individual antibiotics throughout all sites and seasons. The Fsinking of ∑AB14 (defined as a summary of 14 antibiotics) was 750.46 ± 283.19, 242.71 ± 122.87, and 346.74 ± 249.52 ng of m–2 d–1 in spring, summer, and winter seasons. Eutrophication indirectly led to an elevated pH, which reduced seasonal Fair–water of antibiotics, sediment aromaticity, and phytoplankton hydrophobicity, thereby decreasing antibiotic accumulation in sediments and phytoplankton. Negative correlations were further found between Fsinking and the water column daily loss of antibiotics with phytoplankton biomass. The novelty of this study is to provide new complementary knowledge for the regulation mechanisms of antibiotics by phytoplankton biological pump, offering novel perspectives and approaches to understanding the coupling between eutrophication and migration and fate of antibiotics in a subtropical eutrophic river.
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) were measured in aquatic, amphibious, and terrestrial wildlife collected from an ...e-waste contaminated pond and its surrounding region. The species-specific bioaccumulation and maternal transfer of chemicals in the watersnake were investigated. Total concentrations of target chemicals ranged from 1.3 × 103 to 4.8 × 105 ng g−1 lipid weight. PCBs were the predominant (72–95%) contaminants, followed by polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs, 4–27%). The concentrations of PCBs and HFRs except decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were higher in aquatic organisms and terrestrial birds than in amphibians and lizards. Relatively high DDT levels were observed in the terrestrial birds and toads, but high DBDPE was found in the aquatic species except for waterbird eggs. Species-specific congeners profiles for PCB and PBDE and isomeric composition for dechlorane plus were observed. These results indicated a habitat-dependent accumulation among different species. Maternal transfer examined by the ratio of egg to carcass for watersnakes indicated multi-linear correlations between maternal transfer potential and octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW) of chemicals. The same maternal transfer efficiencies were found for chemicals with log KOW between 6 and 8, then the maternal transfer potential rapidly decreased with increasing of log KOW.

An analytical method has been developed for measuring 12 organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) in fish tissue samples. After the Soxhlet extraction of PFRs with dichloromethane. The experimental parameters of the clean-up were systematically optimized. Methanol was found to be a more effective solvent than acetonitrile used in freezing-lipid precipitation. Methanol (5%) in ultrapure water, was finally selected to perform solid-phase extraction (SPE, Oasis HLB cartridge), with mean lipid removal efficiency of 94% after freezing-lipid precipitation. Further purification followed by 200mg of Z-Sep and C18 dispersant to eliminate the remaining interferences. Quantification was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in selective ion monitoring mode. The recovery, precision, and the method detection limits (MDLs) were verified by spiking experiments. All chemicals except triethyl phosphate (TEP) showed satisfactory recoveries in the range of 73–107% and 56–108% in the spiked blanks samples and spiked fish tissue samples, respectively. MDLs for PFRs in the biological samples ranged from 0.004 to 0.059ng/g. The proposed method successfully applied to the determination of PFRs in real fish samples with recoveries of four internal standards varying from 75 to 97%. The results demonstrated that the proposed method is highly effective for analyzing PFRs in fish samples.
