If all coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have flux ropes, then the CMEs should keep their helicity signs from the Sun to the Earth according to the helicity conservation principle. This study presents an ...attempt to answer the question from the Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW), “Do all CMEs have flux ropes?”, by using a qualitative helicity sign comparison between interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs) and their CME source regions. For this, we select 34 CME–ICME pairs whose source active regions (ARs) have continuous SOHO/MDI magnetogram data covering more than 24 hr without data gap during the passage of the ARs near the solar disk center. The helicity signs in the ARs are determined by estimation of cumulative magnetic helicity injected through the photosphere in the entire source ARs. ) to 16 second resolution magnetic field data from the MAG instrument onboard the ACE spacecraft. It is found that 30 out of 34 events (88 %) are helicity sign-consistent events, while four events (12 %) are sign-inconsistent. Through a detailed investigation of the source ARs of the four sign-inconsistent events, we find that those events can be explained by the local helicity sign opposite to that of the entire AR helicity (28 July 2000 ICME), incorrectly reported solar source region in the CDAW list (20 May 2005 ICME), or the helicity sign of the pre-existing coronal magnetic field (13 October 2000 and 20 November 2003 ICMEs). We conclude that the helicity signs of the ICMEs are quite consistent with those of the injected helicities in the AR regions from where the CMEs erupted.

Abstract Objectives Metabolic syndrome (MS), as a precursor of diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular disease, is increasing steadily worldwide. We examined the preventive effects of lifestyle ...intervention on the occurrence of DM and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in MS. Study design Observational study on disease occurrence after lifestyle intervention. Methods The lifestyle intervention was administered to subjects with MS participating in a metropolitan lifestyle intervention program for 1 year. The same numbers of non-participating age- and sex-matched subjects with MS were randomly extracted from national health examination data. After intervention or examination, new occurrences of hypertension, DM, and AMI were identified through the national health insurance claims data during 1 year. For DM and AMI, multivariate logistic regression analysis for the factors affecting each disease was performed. Results In the intervention group and the control group (14,918 in each group), the occurrence of hypertension was 555 (6.07%) and 751 (8.33%), the occurrence of DM was 324 (2.55%) and 488 (3.89%), the occurrence of dyslipidemia was 321 (2.59%) and 373 (2.72%), and the occurrence of AMI was 13 (0.09%) and 26 (0.17%), respectively. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, adjusted odds ratios for intervention were 0.752 (95% confidence interval CI: 0.644–0.879) and 0.499 (95% CI: 0.251–0.992) for DM and AMI, respectively, indicating that lifestyle intervention has a preventive effect. Conclusions Lifestyle intervention in MS has preventive effects on the occurrence of DM and AMI, and long-term follow-up is needed to evaluate these preventive effects in more detail.

1 metallic glass, fabricated by injection casting, has been characterized in the supercooled liquid region. The alloy deforms ...homogeneously and exhibits large elongation above the glass transition temperature at constant true strain rate below 1×10
−2s
−1, but it shows a variation of the flow stress during deformation. The flow stress reaches a peak just after yielding and then decreases significantly with increasing strain. After the plateau level of remarkably low flow stress, it rises again and then the alloy finally fails in a brittle manner. DSC data and TEM observations for the tested alloy reveal that the alloy evolves to being crystallized during deformation. Nano-crystals are aggregated and the aggregates are aligned along the load direction. When the volume fraction of the crystalline phase is in the range up to 0.5, the nano-crystal aggregates effectively slide over each other, lowering the apparent stress level. However, as the amount of the crystalline phase further increases, the flow stress continuously increases. This behavior can be explained based on the volume-fraction rule between the crystalline phase and the amorphous phase.
Mycobacterial heparin-binding haemagglutinin antigen (HBHA) is a virulence factor that induces apoptosis of macrophages. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis is an important ...regulatory response that can be utilised to study the pathogenesis of tuberculosis. In the present study, HBHA stimulation induced ER stress sensor molecules in a caspase-dependent manner. Pre-treatment of RAW 264.7 cells with an IκB kinase 2 inhibitor reduced not only C/EBP homology protein expression but also IL-6 and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) production. BAPTA-AM reduced both ER stress responses and caspase activation and strongly suppressed HBHA-induced IL-6 and MCP-1 production in RAW 264.7 cells. Enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and elevated cytosolic Ca(2+)i levels were essential for HBHA-induced ER stress responses. Collectively, our data suggest that HBHA induces cytosolic Ca(2+)i, which influences the generation of ROS associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines. These concerted and complex cellular responses induce ER stress-associated apoptosis during HBHA stimulation in macrophages. These results indicate that the ER stress pathway has an important role in the HBHA-induced apoptosis during mycobacterial infection.

We report the first search for the KL → π0γ decay, which is forbidden by Lorentz invariance, using the data from 2016 to 2018 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With a single event sensitivity of (7.1 ± ...0. 3stat ± 1. 6syst) × 10−8, no candidate event was observed in the signal region. The upper limit on the branching fraction was set to be 1.7 × 10−7 at the 90% confidence level.
Objective: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms and mental health literacy (MHL) in outpatients with or without cancer in Singapore.
Methods: Oncology outpatients ...and outpatients without cancer (controls) were assessed for severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms (using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and MHL regarding major depressive disorder and generalised anxiety disorder in terms of diagnosis, aetiology, treatment, and attitudes toward mental health services.
Results: A total of 89 oncology outpatients and 61 controls were recruited. Those with primary and secondary education had significantly lower MHL scores than those with university education (p = 0.001). Oncology outpatients and controls were comparable in terms of anxiety (13.5% vs 9.8%, p = 0.5), depression (2.2% vs 1.6%, p > 0.99), and total MHL score (7.94 vs 9.13, p = 0.102).
Conclusions: MHL is comparable between oncology outpatients and controls and is positively associated with education level.
In an effort to improve survival and reduce late adverse effects of radiation therapy (RT), 25 children <3 years of age with malignant brain tumors received tandem high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) and ...auto-SCT following six cycles of induction chemotherapy. RT was either not given or deferred until 3 years of age if the patient was in CR after tandem HDCT/auto-SCT. Tumors relapsed or progressed in nine patients (five during induction treatment), and two of these patients survived after receiving salvage treatment, including RT. Two patients died due to toxicities during tandem HDCT/auto-SCT. A total of 16 patients survived to a median follow-up period of 52 months (range 18-96) from the time of diagnosis. Four of these patients did not receive RT, two received local RT (L-RT), three received craniospinal RT (CSRT), and seven received both L-RT and CSRT. The 5-year OS and EFS rates were 67.8±9.4% and 55.5±10.0%, respectively. Neuroendocrine and neurocognitive functions evaluated 3 years after tandem HDCT/auto-SCT were acceptable. Our results indicate that tandem HDCT/auto-SCT may improve survival in young children with malignant brain tumors with an acceptable level of risk of long-term toxicity.
