An item is chiral if it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image. Most biological molecules are chiral. The homochirality of amino acids ensures that proteins are chiral, which is essential for ...their functions. Chirality also occurs at the whole-cell level, which was first studied mostly in ciliates, single-celled protozoans. Ciliates show chirality in their cortical structures, which is not determined by genetics, but by ‘cortical inheritance’. These studies suggested that molecular chirality directs whole-cell chirality. Intriguingly, chirality in cellular structures and functions is also found in metazoans. In Drosophila, intrinsic cell chirality is observed in various left–right (LR) asymmetric tissues, and appears to be responsible for their LR asymmetric morphogenesis. In other invertebrates, such as snails and Caenorhabditis elegans, blastomere chirality is responsible for subsequent LR asymmetric development. Various cultured cells of vertebrates also show intrinsic chirality in their cellular behaviours and intracellular structural dynamics. Thus, cell chirality may be a general property of eukaryotic cells. In Drosophila, cell chirality drives the LR asymmetric development of individual organs, without establishing the LR axis of the whole embryo. Considering that organ-intrinsic LR asymmetry is also reported in vertebrates, this mechanism may contribute to LR asymmetric development across phyla.

Point cloud registration plays a crucial role in 3D mapping and localization. Urban scene point clouds pose significant challenges for registration due to their large data volume, similar scenarios, ...and dynamic objects. Estimating the location by instances (bulidings, traffic lights, etc.) in urban scenes is a more humanized matter. In this paper, we propose PCRMLP (point cloud registration MLP), a novel model for urban scene point cloud registration that achieves comparable registration performance to prior learning-based methods. Compared to previous works that focused on extracting features and estimating correspondence, PCRMLP estimates transformation implicitly from concrete instances. The key innovation lies in the instance-level urban scene representation method, which leverages semantic segmentation and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) to generate instance descriptors, enabling robust feature extraction, dynamic object filtering, and logical transformation estimation. Then, a lightweight network consisting of Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs) is employed to obtain transformation in an encoder-decoder manner. Experimental validation on the KITTI dataset demonstrates that PCRMLP achieves satisfactory coarse transformation estimates from instance descriptors within a remarkable time of 0.0028 s. With the incorporation of an ICP refinement module, our proposed method outperforms prior learning-based approaches, yielding a rotation error of 2.01° and a translation error of 1.58 m. The experimental results highlight PCRMLP's potential for coarse registration of urban scene point clouds, thereby paving the way for its application in instance-level semantic mapping and localization.
Leaching copper from shredded particles of waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) was carried out in sulfuric acid solution using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant at room temperature. The influence of ...system variables on copper recovery by leaching was investigated, such as sulfuric concentration, amount of hydrogen peroxide addition, waste PBCs particle size, presence of cupric ion, temperature and time. The results shown that the optimum addition amount was 100mL 15 (wt%) sulfuric acid solution and 10mL of 30% hydrogen peroxide for leaching 10g waste PCBs powder with a solid/liquid ratio of 1/10 for 3h at room temperature (∼23°C). Moreover leaching temperature and initial copper ion concentration had insignificant effect on the leaching recovery of copper. The effect of different particle size of shredded waste PCBs on leaching of copper was investigated under the optimum leaching condition. The results revealed that shredding pieces of waste PCBs smaller than 1mm was efficient and suitable for copper leaching. Then the leaching solution was concentrated to crystallize CuSO4·5H2O, and crystal liquor was reused for the next cycles.
Visual-inertial odometry (VIO) algorithms, fusing various features such as points and lines, are able to improve their performance in challenging scenes while the running time severely increases. In ...this paper, we propose a novel lightweight point-line visual-inertial odometry algorithm to solve this problem, called LRPL-VIO. Firstly, a fast line matching method is proposed based on the assumption that the photometric values of endpoints and midpoints are invariant between consecutive frames, which greatly reduces the time consumption of the front end. Then, an efficient filter-based state estimation framework is designed to finish information fusion (point, line, and inertial). Fresh measurements of line features with good tracking quality are selected for state estimation using a unique feature selection scheme, which improves the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. Finally, validation experiments are conducted on public datasets and in real-world tests to evaluate the performance of LRPL-VIO and the results show that we outperform other state-of-the-art algorithms especially in terms of speed and robustness.
Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is the predominant form of phosphorus (P) readily accessible to plants, and Pi Transporter 1 (PHT1) genes are the major contributors to root Pi uptake. However, the ...mechanisms underlying the transport and recycling of Pi within plants, which are vital for optimizing P use efficiency, remain elusive. Here, we characterized a functionally unknown rice (Oryza sativa) PHT1 member barely expressed in roots, OsPHT1;7. Yeast complementation and Xenopus laevis oocyte assay demonstrated that OsPHT1;7 could mediate Pi transport. Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction and histochemical analyses showed that OsPHT1;7 was preferentially expressed in source leaves and nodes. A further fine-localization analysis by immunostaining showed that OsPHT1;7 expression was restricted in the vascular bundle (VB) sheath and phloem of source leaves as well as in the phloem of regular/diffuse- and enlarged-VBs of nodes. In accordance with this expression pattern, mutation of OsPHT1;7 led to increased and decreased P distribution in source (old leaves) and sink organs (new leaves/panicles), respectively, indicating that OsPHT1;7 is involved in P redistribution. Furthermore, OsPHT1;7 showed an overwhelmingly higher transcript abundance in anthers than other PHT1 members, and ospht1;7 mutants were impaired in P accumulation in anthers but not in pistils or husks. Moreover, the germination of pollen grains was significantly inhibited upon OsPHT1;7 mutation, leading to a >80% decrease in seed-setting rate and grain yield. Taken together, our results provide evidence that OsPHT1;7 is a crucial Pi transporter for Pi transport and recycling within rice plants, stimulating both vegetative and reproductive growth.

This study provides a new clue regarding rice yield and quality under HS and provides guidance to rice cultivation and heat tolerance breeding.
Setaria italica is an important crop in China that plays a vital role in the Chinese dietary structure. In the last several decades, high temperature has become the most severe climate issue in the ...world, which causes great harm to the yield and quality formation of millet. In this study, two main cultivated varieties (ZG2 and AI88) were used to explore the photosynthesis and yield index of the whole plant under heat stress. Results implied that photosynthesis was not inhibited during the heat stress, and that the imbalance in sugar transport between different tissues may be the main factor that affects yield formation. In addition, the expression levels of seven SiSUT and twenty-four SiSWEET members were explored. Sugar transporters were heavily affected during the heat stress. The expression of SiSWEET13a was inhibited by heat stress in the stems, which may play a vital role in sugar transport between different tissues. These results provide new insights into the yield formation of crops under heat stress, which will provide guidance to crop breeding and cultivation.
To address the issue of excessive mid-span deflection in rigid frame-continuous girder bridges during the later stages of normal use and to provide a basis for setting the pre-camber of this bridge ...type. This study focused on a specific rigid frame-continuous girder bridge. Based on the outcomes of finite element analysis, a GM(1,1) model developed using grey theory was utilized to forecast the vertical deflection of the primary girder in the construction phase of a rigid frame-continuous girder bridge, resulting in notable outcomes. The results suggest that the GM(1,1) model grounded in grey theory offers precise estimations of the vertical deflection of the primary girder during the prestressing tendon tensioning stage, displaying a minimal deviation of merely 1.73 mm compared to actual measurements. Consequently, applying the GM(1,1) model based on grey theory for projecting the vertical deflection of the primary girder in the construction process of rigid frame-continuous girder bridges can advance the accuracy of construction management. Through comparative analysis of measured values estimated values and theoretical values at the construction site, it is evident that the predictive model effectively controls the displacement, thus serving as a reference for construction control in similar projects.
In this paper, we design an optical chaotic secure communication system with multi-dimensional keys and a complex entropy source, which can allow secure communication working in different modes such ...as unicast, multicast, and broadcast. In the proposed scheme, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with sufficient randomness is used as an entropy source to improve the security of the system. And by using the electro-optic delay feedback loops, the key spaces are introduced and the phase distortion is generated, then the data are masked in both phase and intensity fields. As a frequency-dependent group delay (FDGD) module, Gires-Tournois interferometer (G-T I) in the feedback loop can effectively hide the time delay signature (TDS) and achieve additional 10 36 key spaces. The influence of different key mismatches on decryption function is numerically investigated, and the results indicate that the broadband nature of ASE noise makes the TDS a very sensitive encryption key, which increases the difficulty of illegal third parties stealing information. And with the help of the wavelength converter and wavelength division multiplexer, secure communication in various modes is successfully realized, which greatly improves the communication efficiency and is suitable for various security places.
To investigate protective effects of VVN001 on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response in human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and in a mouse model of endotoxin-induced uveitis ...(EIU), and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Human primary RPE (hRPE) and ARPE-19 cells were pretreated with or without VVN001 for 1 h followed by 10 μg/mL LPS stimulation for 24 h. mRNA, and protein levels of inflammatory cytokines were analyzed with real-time PCR, western blotting, and ELISA. EIU was induced by intravitreal injection of 125 ng LPS in female BALB/c mice. VVN001 eye drops (1%) were locally administrated every 4 h for 24 h after LPS injection. Clinical scores were assessed with a slit lamp. mRNA and protein levels of inflammatory cytokines were investigated simultaneously. Compared with the LPS group, VVN001 pretreatment significantly reduced mRNA expressions of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-18, caspase-1 in hRPE, and ARPE-19 cells. Protein overproduction of ICAM-1, TNF-α, IL-1β, NLRP3, caspase-1 P20, and p-IκBα/IκBα stimulated by LPS was suppressed by VVN001 pretreatment.
In vivo
, VVN001 significantly reduced the average clinical score from 5.0 to 1.3 in EIU mice. Furthermore, overproduction of ICAM-1, IL-1β, NLRP3, caspase-1 P20, and p-IκBα/IκBα at mRNA and protein levels were remarkably suppressed by VVN001. VVN001 alleviated the inflammatory response induced by LPS both
in vitro
and
in vivo.
