Extract: To determine if vitamin D deficiency would retard the ability of muscle to hypertrophy in response to mechanical stress, the gastrocnemius tendon was severed on one leg of rats in each of ...three groups, the treatment of which differed only in the amount of vitamin D in the diet. After 1 week the increased size of the soleus and plantaris in the leg in which the gastrocnemius was severed, relative to that of the sham operated leg, was determined for each rat. Despite differences in body weight and serum calcium among the groups, no difference in the percent of muscle hypertrophy was found. Muscle hypertrophy can occur in response to local mechanical forces despite a deficient hormonal environment that otherwise retards growth.
The production of colony-stimulating factor (CSF) by murine transformed cells was investigated in 10 cell lines derived from spontaneous or chemically induced tumours and from cells transformed by ...SV40 or Moloney-MSV; histologic types included carcinomas, sarcomas and melanoma. Nine of 10 supernatants contained CSF activity as judged by in vitro proliferation and differentiation of normal murine monocytic and granulocytic progenitors in agar cultures. Tumours induced with CSF-producing cells caused alterations of haemopoiesis which can include leukocytosis, granulocytosis and splenomegaly. Haemopoietic alterations were also evident in the absence of a local tumour in mice bearing large experimental lung metastases. Production of CSF seems to be a frequent finding among murine cell lines, and its biological and immunological consequences on host-tumour relationships should be taken into account.

The Authors analyze the "meat purification" process in the bovine. This process involves a cardiovascular infusion into the animal at the moment the animal is bled. The isotonic infusion solution ...removes virtually all of the remaining blood and induces tenderness and maximizes juiciness. The Authors investigate 12 slaughtered Polish cattle from 460 to 595 kg live weight. Bacteriological examinations are carried out, before and after the use, on the solution used to infuse the cardiovascular system of the animals. The bleeding, pH, temperature values and water holding capacity are pointed out on the carcasses. Histopathological examinations are made on the main organs and apparatus. Weight losses of boiled or grilled meat are determined and the tenderness with juiciness are evaluated. Meat inspection considerations are pointed out
Splenectomized subjects show a higher incidence of myocardial ischemia and of Overwhelming Post-Splenectomy Infection (OPSI). It is doubtful that implanted splenic tissue guarantees an adequate ...protection from OPSI. The histological characteristics and the capacity of protection from OPSI of two models of omental autoimplantation of splenic tissue in rats were examined. The implanted splenic tissue offers a significant protection from pneumococcal sepsis, even though there is no relation between implant architecture and survival rate.
