Infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which has been characterized by fever, respiratory, and gastrointestinal ...symptoms as well as shedding of virus RNA into feces. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published gastrointestinal symptoms and detection of virus in stool and also summarized data from a cohort of patients with COVID-19 in Hong Kong.
We collected data from the cohort of patients with COVID-19 in Hong Kong (N = 59; diagnosis from February 2 through February 29, 2020),and searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and 3 Chinese databases through March 11, 2020, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. We analyzed pooled data on the prevalence of overall and individual gastrointestinal symptoms (loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain or discomfort) using a random effects model.
Among the 59 patients with COVID-19 in Hong Kong, 15 patients (25.4%) had gastrointestinal symptoms, and 9 patients (15.3%) had stool that tested positive for virus RNA. Stool viral RNA was detected in 38.5% and 8.7% among those with and without diarrhea, respectively (P = .02). The median fecal viral load was 5.1 log10 copies per milliliter in patients with diarrhea vs 3.9 log10 copies per milliliter in patients without diarrhea (P = .06). In a meta-analysis of 60 studies comprising 4243 patients, the pooled prevalence of all gastrointestinal symptoms was 17.6% (95% confidence interval CI, 12.3–24.5); 11.8% of patients with nonsevere COVID-19 had gastrointestinal symptoms (95% CI, 4.1–29.1), and 17.1% of patients with severe COVID-19 had gastrointestinal symptoms (95% CI, 6.9–36.7). In the meta-analysis, the pooled prevalence of stool samples that were positive for virus RNA was 48.1% (95% CI, 38.3–57.9); of these samples, 70.3% of those collected after loss of virus from respiratory specimens tested positive for the virus (95% CI, 49.6–85.1).
In an analysis of data from the Hong Kong cohort of patients with COVID-19 and a meta-analysis of findings from publications, we found that 17.6% of patients with COVID-19 had gastrointestinal symptoms. Virus RNA was detected in stool samples from 48.1% patients, even in stool collected after respiratory samples had negative test results. Health care workers should therefore exercise caution in collecting fecal samples or performing endoscopic procedures in patients with COVID-19, even during patient recovery.

The development of biomaterials that exhibit profound bioactivity and stimulate stem cell differentiation is imperative for the success and prognosis of vital pulp therapies. The objectives were to ...(1) synthesize calcium strontium silicate (CSR) ceramic through the sol−gel process (2) investigate its physicochemical properties, bioactivity, cytocompatibility, and its stimulatory effect on the differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells (HDPSC). Calcium silicate (CS) and calcium strontium silicate (CSR) were synthesized by the sol−gel method and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). Setting time, compressive strength, and pH were measured. The in vitro apatite formation was evaluated by SEM-EDX and FTIR. The NIH/3T3 cell viability was assessed using an MTT assay. The differentiation of HDPSC was evaluated using alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), and Alizarin red staining (ARS). Ion release of Ca, Sr, and Si was measured using inductive coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). XRD showed the synthesis of (CaSrSiO4). The initial and final setting times were significantly shorter in CSR (5 ± 0.75 min, 29 ± 1.9 min) than in CS (8 ± 0.77 min, 31 ± 1.39 min), respectively (p < 0.05). No significant difference in compressive strength was found between CS and CSR (p > 0.05). CSR demonstrated higher apatite formation and cell viability than CS. The ALP activity was significantly higher in CSR 1.16 ± 0.12 than CS 0.92 ± 0.15 after 14 d of culture (p < 0.05). ARS showed higher mineralization in CSR than CS after 14 and 21 d culture times. CSR revealed enhanced differentiation of HDPSC, physicochemical properties, and bioactivity compared to CS.
Abstract Objectives C haracterization of a number of pulp capping materials and assessment of the leachate for elemental composition, antimicrobial activity and cell proliferation and expression. ...Methodology Three experimental light curable pulp-capping materials, Theracal and Biodentine were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The elemental composition of the leachate formed after 24 hours was assessed by inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The antimicrobial activity of the leachate was determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against multispecies suspensions of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, Streptococcus gordonii ATCC 33478 and Streptococcus sobrinus ATCC 33399. Cell proliferation and cell metabolic function over the material leachate was assessed by an indirect contact test using Methyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Results The hydration behaviour of the test materials varied with Biodentine being the most reactive and releasing the highest amount of calcium ions in solution. All materials tested except the unfilled resin exhibited depletion of phosphate ions from the solution indicating interaction of the materials with the media. Regardless the different material characteristics, there was a similar antimicrobial activity and cellular activity. All the materials exhibited no antimicrobial activity and were initially cytotoxic with cell metabolic function improving after 3 days. Conclusions The development of light curable tricalcium silicate-based pulp capping materials is important to improve the bonding to the final resin restoration. Testing of both antimicrobial activity and biological behavior is critical for material development. The experimental light curable materials exhibited promising biological properties but require further development to enhance the antimicrobial characteristics.
The XENON100 experiment, situated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, aims at the direct detection of dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), based on their ...interactions with xenon nuclei in an ultra low background dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the general methods developed for the analysis of the XENON100 data. These methods have been used in the 100.9 and 224.6 live days science runs from which results on spin-independent elastic, spin-dependent elastic and inelastic WIMP-nucleon cross-sections have already been reported.

The multi-element-doped porous 58S bioactive glass-coated titanium implant was synthesized. SEM showed that calcium phosphate was formed on the novel coating but not on the 58S bioactive glass coating. The mean surface nanohardness of the novel coating and the 58S coating were 124 ± 24 and 50 ± 17 MPa, respectively (
< 0.001). ICP-AES showed that the releases of Si, Ca and P ions of the novel coating were significantly higher than that of a 58S bioactive glass-coated implant. No significant difference in cell cytotoxicity was found between the novel coating and the 58S coating (

Background
Deficiencies in non‐technical skills (NTS) have been increasingly implicated in avoidable operating theatre errors. Accordingly, this study sought to characterize the impact of surgeon and ...anaesthetist non‐technical skills on time to crisis resolution in a simulated operating theatre.
Methods
Non‐technical skills were assessed during 26 simulated crises (haemorrhage and airway emergency) performed by surgical teams. Teams consisted of surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses. Behaviour was assessed by four trained raters using the Non‐Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) and Anaesthetists' Non‐Technical Skills (ANTS) rating scales before and during the crisis phase of each scenario. The primary endpoint was time to crisis resolution; secondary endpoints included NTS scores before and during the crisis. A cross‐classified linear mixed‐effects model was used for the final analysis.
Results
Thirteen different surgical teams were assessed. Higher NTS ratings resulted in significantly faster crisis resolution. For anaesthetists, every 1‐point increase in ANTS score was associated with a decrease of 53·50 (95 per cent c.i. 31·13 to 75·87) s in time to crisis resolution (P < 0·001). Similarly, for surgeons, every 1‐point increase in NOTSS score was associated with a decrease of 64·81 (26·01 to 103·60) s in time to crisis resolution in the haemorrhage scenario (P = 0·001); however, this did not apply to the difficult airway scenario. Non‐technical skills scores were lower during the crisis phase of the scenarios than those measured before the crisis for both surgeons and anaesthetists.
Conclusion
A higher level of NTS of surgeons and anaesthetists led to quicker crisis resolution in a simulated operating theatre environment.

Miniplate osteosynthesis has revolutionised the treatment of open reduction and internal fixation in craniomaxillofacial procedures. However, when complications arise necessitating the removal of ...previously placed miniplates, bony overgrowth may be present and must be eliminated before removal of the hardware is possible. Osteogenesis over the screws prevents proper engagement of the screwdriver with the screw drives. If bone remains embedded in the screw drive during attempted removal of the screw, the contact interference increases the risk of the screwdriver slipping and the screw drive being stripped. There remains a lack of adequate techniques to clear bony overgrowth from miniplates and screws to allow for easy removal, as conventional methods are ineffective, time-consuming, and may damage the screw drives. Herein, we describe a new laser-assisted miniplate removal technique to eliminate bone that has grown over miniplates and screws before the miniplate is removed. This technique is efficient, safe, and simple and, compared with conventional methods, may decrease the complications associated with the removal of miniplates and screws.
We present systematic case studies to investigate the sensitivity of axion searches by liquid xenon detectors, using the axio-electric effect (analogue of the photoelectric effect) on xenon atoms. ...Liquid xenon is widely considered to be one of the best target media for detection of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles which may form the galactic dark matter) using nuclear recoils. Since these detectors also provide an extremely low radioactivity environment for electron recoils, very weakly-interacting low-mass particles (< 100keV/c2), such as the hypothetical axion, could be detected as well – in this case using the axio-electric effect. Future ton-scale liquid Xe detectors will be limited in sensitivity only by irreducible neutrino background (pp-chain solar neutrino and the double beta decay of 136Xe) in the mass range between 1 and 100keV/c2. Assuming one ton-year of exposure, galactic axions (as non-relativistic dark matter) could be detected if the axio-electric coupling gAe is greater than 10−14 at 1keV/c2 axion mass (or 10−13 at 100keV/c2). Below a few keV/c2, and independent of the mass, a solar axion search would be sensitive to a coupling gAe∼10-12. This limit will set a stringent upper bound on axion mass for the DFSZ and KSVZ models for the mass ranges mA<0.1 eV/c2 and <10eV/c2, respectively. Vector-boson dark matter could also be detected for a coupling constant α′/α>10-33 (for mass 1keV/c2) or >10-27 (for mass 100keV/c2).
