TiO 2 nanowires have proven their importance as a versatile material in numerous fields of technology due to their unique properties attributable to their high aspect ratio and large surface area. ...However, synthesis is an enormous challenge since state-of-the-art techniques rely on complex, multi-stage procedures with expensive, specialized equipment, employing high-temperature steps and potentially toxic precursor materials and surfactants. Hence, we elucidate a simple and facile top-down methodology for the synthesis of nanowires with non-stoichiometric Magnéli phase Ti 9 O 17 . This methodology relies on the electrochemical erosion of bulk Ti wires immersed in an aqueous electrolyte, circumventing the use of environmentally harmful precursors or surfactants, eliminating the need for high temperatures, and reducing synthesis complexity and time. Using multiple techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, we provide evidence of the successful synthesis of ultrathin nanowires with the crystal structure of non-stoichiometric Ti 9 O 17 Magnéli phase. The nanowire width of ∼5 nm and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of ∼215 m 2 g −1 make the nanowires presented in this work comparable to those synthesized by state-of-the-art bottom-up techniques.

Identifying, analyzing, and explaining trends in the development of material culture is one of the major concerns in prehistoric archaeology. The traditional recording of data in typologies, however, ...is not optimal for answering the question of diachronic change because typological data capture variability poorly and are often incompatible with multivariate statistics. To overcome these problems, we present PyREnArA (Python-R-Environment for Artifact Analysis), a trait-based tool that allows for a systematic recording of diversity and variability in a way that is applicable to quantitative analysis and multivariate statistics. Using Gravettian assemblages from Lower Austria and Moravia as a case study, we analyze changes in the morphology as well as the design of lithic projectiles and statistically determine the amount of variation that correlates with the progression of time. We identify a slow trend towards slenderer and more pointed projectiles and a shift from laterally to latero-frontally hafted implements. Most of the analyzed traits, however, appear not to experience selective pressure and seem to be unrelated to the passage of time. We discuss these results with regard to different scales of selection, in particular individual choice vs. macroevolutionary group selection over longer periods of time and thus beyond the realm of individual intend, and we raise questions for future research.
Background: To investigate whether vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is associated with the onset of retinal vascular occlusive disease (RVOD). Methods: In this multicentre study, data from patients ...with central and branch retinal vein occlusion (CRVO and BRVO), central and branch retinal artery occlusion (CRAO and BRAO), and anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (AION) were retrospectively collected during a 2-month index period (1 June–31 July 2021) according to a defined protocol. The relation to any previous vaccination was documented for the consecutive case series. Numbers of RVOD and COVID-19 vaccination were investigated in a case-by-case analysis. A case–control study using age- and sex-matched controls from the general population (study participants from the Gutenberg Health Study) and an adjusted conditional logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: Four hundred and twenty-one subjects presenting during the index period (61 days) were enrolled: one hundred and twenty-one patients with CRVO, seventy-five with BRVO, fifty-six with CRAO, sixty-five with BRAO, and one hundred and four with AION. Three hundred and thirty-two (78.9%) patients had been vaccinated before the onset of RVOD. The vaccines given were BNT162b2/BioNTech/Pfizer (n = 221), followed by ChadOx1/AstraZeneca (n = 57), mRNA-1273/Moderna (n = 21), and Ad26.COV2.S/Johnson & Johnson (n = 11; unknown n = 22). Our case–control analysis integrating population-based data from the GHS yielded no evidence of an increased risk after COVID-19 vaccination (OR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.60–1.45, p = 0.75) in connection with a vaccination within a 4-week window. Conclusions: To date, there has been no evidence of any association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and a higher RVOD risk.

The role of Beethoven's music in Beckett's second television play is very complex. In this paper, I first analyze the formal structure of the second movement of the Geistertrio — the Largo assai ed ...espressivo — that Beckett used in the play. I then describe at what points in the play Beckett introduced the musical passages from this movement. Thirdly, I outline the six stages of development in Beckett's conception of the role music was to play in his Ghost Trio. This article is a shortened, revised, and translated version of a much longer article (Maier 2000). The second part will appear in the next volume of SBT/A.
Long-term variability (LTV) of heart rate was calculated continuously by a microprocessor in 25 preterm infants undergoing indomethacin treatment for closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), in 24 ...preterm infants without signs of PDA, and in 10 neonates treated with prostaglandin E1 for cyanotic heart malformation. In infants with patent ductus arteriosus, LTV was lower than in controls. Following indomethacin, LTV increased most markedly (from 1.5 to 3.2; p less than 0.01) in infants with improved ventilation. The increase was less marked (from 1.8 to 2.5; p less than 0.05) in infants whose degree of respiratory failure did not change. LTV remained largely unchanged in infants who deteriorated. In 9 out of the 10 neonates treated with prostaglandin E1, LTV increased. We conclude that LTV corresponds to brain stem oxygenation and may be a useful tool to monitor treatment of PDA.
