A liquid argon time projection chamber, constructed for the Argon Response to Ionization and Scintillation (ARIS) experiment, is exposed to the highly collimated and quasimonoenergetic LICORNE ...neutron beam at the Institut de Physique Nucléaire d’Orsay (IPNO) in order to study the scintillation response to nuclear and electronic recoils. An array of liquid scintillator detectors, arranged around the apparatus, tag scattered neutrons and select nuclear recoil energies in the 7, 120 keV energy range. The relative scintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils is measured to high precision at null field, and the ion-electron recombination probability is extracted for a range of applied electric fields. Single-scattered Compton electrons, produced by gammas emitted from the deexcitation of Li*7 in coincidence with the beam pulse, along with calibration gamma sources, are used to extract the recombination probability as a function of energy and electron drift field. The ARIS results are compared with three recombination probability parametrizations (Thomas-Imel, Doke-Birks, and PARIS), allowing for the definition of a fully comprehensive model of the liquid argon response to nuclear and electronic recoils down to the few-keV range. The constraints provided by ARIS to the liquid argon response at low energy allow the reduction of systematics affecting the sensitivity of dark matter search experiments based on liquid argon.

Physical mechanisms of production and methods of estimation for the dominant sources are ...considered, and comparisons of the calculations with underground measurements are discussed. Principal background sources discussed include primary interactions of cosmic rays, mechanisms of neutron production by cosmic rays and low energy backgrounds from neutrons, primordial and anthropogenic radionuclides, and secondary radioactivity from spallation.

We have measured the scintillation and ionization yield of recoiling nuclei in liquid argon as a function of applied electric field by exposing a dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber ...(LAr-TPC) to a low energy pulsed narrow band neutron beam produced at the Notre Dame Institute for Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics. Liquid scintillation counters were arranged to detect and identify neutrons scattered in the TPC and to select the energy of the recoiling nuclei. We report measurements of the scintillation yields for nuclear recoils with energies from 10.3 to 57.3 keV and for median applied electric fields from 0 to 970 V/ cm. For the ionization yields, we report measurements from 16.9 to 57.3 keV and for electric fields from 96.4 to 486 V/ cm. We also report the observation of an anticorrelation between scintillation and ionization from nuclear recoils, which is similar to the anticorrelation between scintillation and ionization from electron recoils. Assuming that the energy loss partitions into excitons and ion pairs from super(83)mKr internal conversion electrons is comparable to that from super(207)Bi conversion electrons, we obtained the numbers of excitons (N sub(ex)) and ion pairs (N sub(i)) and their ratio (N sub(ex)/N sub(i)) produced by nuclear recoils from 16.9 to 57.3 keV. Motivated by arguments suggesting direction sensitivity in LAr-TPC signals due to columnar recombination, a comparison of the light and charge yield of recoils parallel and perpendicular to the applied electric field is presented for the first time.

Prior to the irradiation with a neutron beam, the ReD TPC underwent a long campaign of characterization and optimization: some selected results are presented in this contribution.

The Recoil Directionality project (ReD) within the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration aims to characterize the light and charge re- sponse of a liquid Argon dual-phase TPC to neutron-induced nuclear recoils to probe for the hint by SCENE. In this work, the directional sensitivity of the de- tector in the energy range of interest for WIMPs (20-100 keV) is investigated with a data-driven analysis involving a Machine Learning algorithm.

Optimum fill pressures for direction-sensitive dark matter detectors based on tracking in gases are considered. Given the minimum resolvable track length and the gas fill, the Lindhard–Scharf stopping model leads to the existence of an optimum pressure which maximizes the specific event rate
R
(event rate per unit detector volume). In addition, maximizing the detectibility of the recoil nucleus diurnal asymmetry is considered. Optimum fill pressures are calculated for Ar, CF
4, CS
2 and Xe gas fills, as a function of the WIMP mass and the minimum resolvable track length. The associated minimum target volumes required to achieve currently competitive WIMP-nucleon cross-section sensitivity are also calculated. The standard isothermal sphere model of the galactic WIMP halo is used throughout, but the method could be extended to use any desired WIMP distribution function.
In this study, we present a preliminary investigation focused on determining cumulative fission yields for short-lived fission products. Our analysis involves examining gamma spectra from the ...irradiated samples of 235U and 239Pu using the High Flux Isotope Reactor. The motivation stems from the observed discrepancy in the antineutrino energy spectrum within the range of 5 to 7 MeV. While several hypotheses have been proposed, a thorough analysis of fission yields provides an additional way of gaining insight into this unexplained phenomenon. Our study suggests that the measured gamma rays from 100 Nb, 140 Cs and 95 Sr are consistent with the expected values. However, 93 Rb, 96Y, 97Y and 142 Cs cannot be quantified due to insufficient statistics, interference from other gamma rays and the Compton scattering background. Additionally, the calculated cumulative fission yields based on the measured 140 Cs and 95 Sr are found to be consistent with the JEFF3.3 fission yield library. In conclusion, the present work shows that the potential of improving gamma-ray spectroscopy in the fission yields as a means to improve our understanding of the antineutrino spectrum.
