Algal-bacterial interactions include mutualism, commensalism, and predation. However, how multiple environmental conditions that regulate the strength and prevalence of a given interaction remains ...unclear. Here, we test the hypothesis that the prevailing algal-bacterial interaction shifted in two years (2005 versus 2015), due to increased temperature (T) and Saharan dust depositions in high-mountain lakes of Sierra Nevada (S Spain). Our results support the starting hypothesis that the nature of the prevailing algal-bacterial interaction shifted from a bacterivory control exerted by algae to commensalism, coinciding with a higher air and water T as well as the lower ratio sestonic nitrogen (N): phosphorous (P), related to greater aerosol inputs. Projected global change conditions in Mediterranean region could decline the functional diversity and alter the role of mixotrophy as a carbon (C) by-pass in the microbial food web, reducing the biomass-transfer efficiency up the web by increasing the number of trophic links.
The copper sequestering ability of melatonin and its metabolites cyclic 3‐hydroxymelatonin (3OHM), N1‐acetyl‐N2‐formyl‐5‐methoxykynuramine (AFMK), and N1‐acetyl‐5‐methoxykynuramine (AMK) was ...investigated within the frame of the Density Functional Theory. It was demonstrated that these compounds are capable of chelating copper ions, yielding stable complexes. The most likely chelation sites were identified. Two different mechanisms were modeled, the direct‐chelation mechanism (DCM) and the coupled‐deprotonation‐chelation mechanism (CDCM). It is proposed that, under physiological conditions, CDCM would be the main chelation route for Cu(II). It was found that melatonin and its metabolites fully inhibited the oxidative stress induced by Cu(II)‐ascorbate mixtures, via Cu(II) chelation. In the same way, melatonin, AFMK, and 3OHM also prevented the first step of the Haber–Weiss reaction, consequently turning off the ˙OH production via the Fenton reaction. Therefore, it is proposed that, in addition to the previously reported free radical scavenging cascade, melatonin is also involved in a concurrent ‘chelating cascade’, thereby contributing to a reduction in oxidative stress. 3OHM was identified as the most efficient of the studied compounds for that purpose, supporting the important role of this metabolite in the beneficial effects of melatonin against oxidative stress.
This research aims to broaden the understanding of thermal comfort in educational buildings, by considering social and cultural variables during the analysis phase. For this purpose, thermal comfort ...assessments in two free-running schools, with 7-16-year-old children, in Bogotá, Colombia were used as case studies. The Classroom-Comfort-Data method was applied to gather information from the buildings and occupants, through environmental measurements, questionnaires, focus groups and observation logbooks. The study addressed physical and environmental factors, as well as physiological and psychological variables that affect thermal comfort in school buildings. A minimal correlation was found between the classrooms’ mean indoor operative temperatures and the thermal sensation and thermal comfort votes. Instead, factors related to behavioural codes, school operation, and building design appeared to greatly influence thermal comfort, as well as the actions children take to adapt to their environment. Other variables such as social context and common beliefs were observed to impact on how students perceive thermal environments. It was also observed that the thermal environment awareness and its effects on cognition increased with age. It is argued here that the adaptive model is an unsuitable metric to study thermal comfort in educational buildings in the local context.

•Stainless steel (SS) reinforcements offer high ductility performance to fracture.•SS reinforced concrete provides long-lasting constructions and buildings.•SS reinforcements show ...higher ductility than carbon steel (CS) when hot rolled.•SS reinforcements reach a slightly lower modulus of elasticity than CS.
The mechanical and structural behavior of three stainless steel (SS) reinforcing bars (austenitic AISI 304, duplex AISI 2304 and new lean duplex AISI 2001) have been studied and compared with the conventional carbon steel (CS) B500SD. The study was conducted at rebar level, cross-section level and structural member level. The results demonstrate higher ductility performance for hot-rolled SS rebars than for CS, but lower ductility for cold-rolled SS rebars compared to CS. The experimental elastic modulus of SS rebars is lower than that of CS.
Mixotrophic protists combine phagotrophy and phototrophy within a single cell. Greater phagotrophic activity could reinforce the bypass of carbon (C) flux through the bacteria‐mixotroph link and thus ...lead to a more efficient transfer of C and other nutrients to the top of the trophic web. Determining how foreseeable changes in temperature and UVR affect mixotrophic trade‐offs in favor of one or the other nutritional strategy, along the mixotrophic gradient, is key to understanding the fate of carbon and mineral nutrients in the aquatic ecosystem. Our two main hypotheses were: (i) that increased warming and UVR will divert metabolism toward phagotrophy, and (ii) that the magnitude of this shift will vary according to the organism's position along the mixotrophic gradient. To test these hypotheses, we used two protists (Isochrysis galbana and Chromulina sp.) located in different positions on the mixotrophic gradient, subjecting them to the action of temperature and of UVR and their interaction. Our results showed that the joint action of these two factors increased the primary production:bacterivory ratio and stoichiometric values (N:P ratio) close to Redfield's ratio. Therefore, temperature and UVR shifted the metabolism of both organisms toward greater phototrophy regardless of the original position of the organism on the mixotrophic gradient. Weaker phagotrophic activity could cause a less efficient transfer of C to the top of trophic webs.
This paper presents the design of an observer-based quadratic boundedness protocol for leader-following consensus in multi-agent systems. The problem under consideration is to force all the agents to ...follow the trajectories of a virtual leader in spite of bounded disturbances which implies that the leader-following consensus is reached in a positively invariant and attractive ellipsoid. Under the framework of control synthesis in multi-agent systems subject to bounded disturbances, linear matrix inequality-based sufficient conditions are obtained for the computation of the controller and observer gains. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulations in a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles subject to wind turbulence which are shown to achieve formation control.
