Volvulus of the small bowel without predisposing anatomical defects is a rare cause of acute intestinal obstruction in the Western world, and its incidence is decreasing in Europe and America, ...although it is common in others parts of the world. The causes of primary volvulus of the small bowel and the mechanism of rotation of the entire root of the mesentery remain unexplained. Several anatomical and dietary factors have been implicated. This theory requires strong peristalsis, tense, firm abdominal muscles and feeding pattern of very bulky meals taken at long intervals. In the present case, a large quantity of bulky poorly digested food consumed previously, and strong abdominal muscles are in keeping with the above theory.

We describe the initiation of a robotics based engineering outreach program geared toward elementary school and middle school students. Students playfully learn engineering concepts such as ...brainstorming, designing, building, testing, trouble shouting, repeatability, and improving their design using the programmable LEGOreg Mindstormsreg NXT kits. They test their design in competitions between different teams from a school and teams from different schools. We offer paid mentor positions to Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering freshman students to help the school teams. We also provide opportunities for teacher training to elementary and middle school teachers and provide them with the necessary kits and hardware. We also offer similar courses through Texas Tech University in form of Super Saturdays (students spend 4 Saturday mornings on Campus) or residential summer camps as well as through a local community center. In this way, students who were exposed to LEGOreg robotics at school can continue this activity during their spare time.
Social stress due to food availability has been studied in captive baboons, as a common behavioral pattern exhibited by several primate species. The aim of the study is to draw information about food ...transport and availability, and the effects of these factors on social behavior and residue accumulations. This information can be applied to early African archaeological sites if hominids still behaved as the rest of primates. The conclusion is that redundant carcass transport to sites is better understood if food extracted from them was high yielding rather than the low yielding resources from carcasses scavenged from other carnivores' kills.
Brain topography mapping is a useful technique for the representation of electrical activity recorded on the scalp. It clarifies spatial and temporal relationships between different cortical areas. ...In this work we propose a system which includes several enhancements over those previously proposed, such as an optimised interpolation method and a three dimensional reconstruction of maps. This system is available in a personal computer environment. Results clearly show a superiority of the 3D representation over 2D maps obtained with different projections. The performance of this system in terms of speed and precision is comparable to that of dedicated image processing and image synthesis workstations proposed for brain mapping.

This paper presents the development and test of the standard IEC-60870-5 application layer protocol over TCP/IP for a remote terminal unit (RTU) based on open hardware and software. The RTU hardware ...is an embedded system, a SoC-type design using FPGA that has been programmed with the open core LEO/ with Linux operating system running over it, so both the and IOS are open source. For prototyping the GR-XC3S-hardware 1500 board has been used. There is no open source code available for the IEC standard protocols, so application layer protocol over TCP/IP has to be implemented. All the software design has been made in a PC platform using standard development tools. The source code generated for the protocol has been compiled with the standard Linux gcc compiler in LEON. Several tests have been made to prove that the RTU works correctly.
The sequence of the pckA gene coding for phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase in Escherichia coli K-12 and previous molecular weight determinations indicate that this allosteric enzyme is a monomer of ...Mr 51,316. The protein is homologous to ATP-dependent phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinases from Trypanosoma brucei and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A potential ATP binding site was conserved in all three sequences. A potential binding site for the allosteric activator, calcium, identified in the E. coli enzyme, was only partially conserved in T. brucei and S. cerevisiae, consistent with the observation that the enzymes from the latter organisms were not activated by calcium. The published sequence of the ompR and envZ genes from Salmonella typhimurium is followed by a partial sequence that is highly homologous to pckA from E. coli. The order of these genes and the direction of transcription of the presumptive S. typhimurium pckA gene are the same as those in E. coli. The potential calcium binding site of the E. coli enzyme is conserved in the partial predicted sequence of the S. typhimurium phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, consistent with the observation that calcium activation of the S. typhimurium phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase is very similar to that observed for the E. coli enzyme. A pckA mRNA transcript was observed in stationary-phase cells but not in logarithmically growing cells. The mRNA start site was mapped relative to the sequence of the pckA structural gene.
