Women face an earnings penalty associated with motherhood but researchers have paid scant attention to how fatherhood might influence men's long‐term earnings. Using multiple waves of the National ...Longitudinal Survey of Youth and employing ordinary least squares regression and fixed effects models we investigate what happens to men who modify their employment for family reasons. Previous research shows that men work longer hours and earn more after becoming fathers, but if men are unemployed or reduce work hours for family reasons, they could experience a “flexibility stigma” depressing earnings and limiting future career opportunities. We find strong support for the flexibility stigma hypothesis. Controlling for the effects of age, race, education, intelligence, occupation, job tenure, work hours, health limitations, marital status, and number of children, we find that men who ever quit work or are unemployed for family reasons earn significantly less than others in the future. Theoretical reasons for observed findings are discussed.
Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) remains a challenging problem. We sought to examine our experience with thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic repairs over a 24-year period.
Patient information ...was collected in a prospective database and analyzed retrospectively. Univariate and multivariable analysis was performed.
Between January 1991 and December 2014, we repaired 1896 descending thoracic (DTAA) or TAAA in 1795 patients. Mean age was 64.2 ± 13.8, and 702 (37%) were women. Of 1896 operations, 646 (34.1%) were DTAA, 316 (16.7%) TAAA extent I, 310 (16.4%) TAAA extent II, 187 (9.9%) TAAA extent III, 348 (18.4%) TAAA extent IV, and 112 (5.9%) TAAA extent V. Adjunct cerebrospinal fluid drainage (CSFD) + distal aortic perfusion (DAP) was used in 78.4%. Mean preoperative glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was 75.1 ± 14.9 mL/min/1.73 m. Renal dysfunction occurred in 461 (24.3%). Immediate neurodeficit (IND) occurred in 79 (4.2%) and delayed in 104 (5.5%). Of these, 47/104 (45%) recovered by discharge. Postoperative stroke was 95/1896 (5%). Early mortality was 302/1896 (15.9%). Mortality with GFR >95.3 was 28/457 (6.1%), and 131/432 (30.3%) was with GFR < 48.3 (P < 0.0001). Predictors of early mortality were age (P < 0.02), GFR (P < 0.0001), TAAA2 or 3 (P = 0.001), coronary artery disease (P = 0.001), and emergency (P < 0.0001).
Open DTAA and TAAA repair can be performed with acceptable early and late outcomes. This study provides important early- and long-term data on open repair, allowing for better risk stratification of patients with DTAA and TAAA. It is the high-risk subgroup that can now be targeted for endovascular techniques.
Many major human neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), display axonal pathologies including abnormal accumulations ...of proteins and organelles. Such pathologies highlight damage to the axon as part of the pathogenic process and, in particular, damage to transport of cargoes through axons. Indeed, we now know that disruption of axonal transport is an early and perhaps causative event in many of these diseases. Here, we review the role of axonal transport in neurodegenerative disease.
Inadequate funding levels are a major impediment to effective global biodiversity conservation and are likely associated with recent failures to meet United Nations biodiversity targets. Some ...countries are more severely underfunded than others and therefore represent urgent financial priorities. However, attempts to identify these highly underfunded countries have been hampered for decades by poor and incomplete data on actual spending, coupled with uncertainty and lack of consensus over the relative size of spending gaps. Here, we assemble a global database of annual conservation spending. We then develop a statistical model that explains 86% of variation in conservation expenditures, and use this to identify countries where funding is robustly below expected levels. The 40 most severely underfunded countries contain 32% of all threatened mammalian diversity and include neighbors in some of the world’s most biodiversity-rich areas (Sundaland, Wallacea, and Near Oceania). However, very modest increases in international assistance would achieve a large improvement in the relative adequacy of global conservation finance. Our results could therefore be quickly applied to limit immediate biodiversity losses at relatively little cost.
Abstract
The National Cancer Institute-led multidisciplinary Comparative Brain Tumor Consortium (CBTC) convened a glioma pathology board, comprising both veterinarian and physician neuropathologists, ...and conducted a comprehensive review of 193 cases of canine glioma. The immediate goal was to improve existing glioma classification methods through creation of a histologic atlas of features, thus yielding greater harmonization of phenotypic characterization. The long-term goal was to support future incorporation of clinical outcomes and genomic data into proposed simplified diagnostic schema, so as to further bridge the worlds of veterinary and physician neuropathology and strengthen validity of the dog as a naturally occurring, translationally relevant animal model of human glioma. All cases were morphologically reclassified according to a new schema devised by the entire board, yielding a majority opinion diagnosis of astrocytoma (43, 22.3%), 19 of which were low-grade and 24 high-grade, and oligodendroglioma (134, 69.4%), 35 of which were low-grade and 99 were high-grade. Sixteen cases (8.3%) could not be classified as oligodendroglioma or astrocytoma based on morphology alone and were designated as undefined gliomas. The simplified classification scheme proposed herein provides a tractable means for future addition of molecular data, and also serves to highlight histologic similarities and differences between human and canine glioma.
In recent years, much effort has been devoted to unravelling the connection between the accretion flow and the jets in accreting compact objects. In the present work, we report new constraints on ...these issues, through the long-term study of the radio and X-ray behaviour of the black hole candidate H1743−322. This source is known to be one of the 'outliers' of the universal radio/X-ray correlation, i.e. a group of accreting stellar-mass black holes displaying fainter radio emission for a given X-ray luminosity than expected from the correlation. Our study shows that the radio and X-ray emission of H1743−322 are strongly correlated at high luminosity in the hard spectral state. However, this correlation is unusually steep for a black hole X-ray binary: b∼ 1.4 (with L
radio∝Lb
X). Below a critical luminosity, the correlation becomes shallower until it rejoins the standard correlation with b∼ 0.6. Based on these results, we first show that the steep correlation can be explained if the inner accretion flow is radiatively efficient during the hard state, in contrast to what is usually assumed for black hole X-ray binaries in this spectral state. The transition between the steep and the standard correlation would therefore reflect a change from a radiatively efficient to a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. Finally, we investigate the possibility that the discrepancy between 'outliers' and 'standard' black holes arises from the outflow properties rather than from the accretion flow.
Proton-coupled electron transfers (PCETs) are unconventional redox processes in which both protons and electrons are exchanged, often in a concerted elementary step. While PCET is now recognized to ...play a central a role in biological redox catalysis and inorganic energy conversion technologies, its applications in organic synthesis are only beginning to be explored. In this chapter, we aim to highlight the origins, development, and evolution of the PCET processes most relevant to applications in organic synthesis. Particular emphasis is given to the ability of PCET to serve as a non-classical mechanism for homolytic bond activation that is complimentary to more traditional hydrogen atom transfer processes, enabling the direct generation of valuable organic radical intermediates directly from their native functional group precursors under comparatively mild catalytic conditions. The synthetically advantageous features of PCET reactivity are described in detail, along with examples from the literature describing the PCET activation of common organic functional groups.
TEMPO was selected in 2012 by NASA as the first Earth Venture Instrument, for launch between 2018 and 2021. It will measure atmospheric pollution for greater North America from space using ...ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy. TEMPO observes from Mexico City, Cuba, and the Bahamas to the Canadian oil sands, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific, hourly and at high spatial resolution (~2.1km N/S×4.4km E/W at 36.5°N, 100°W). TEMPO provides a tropospheric measurement suite that includes the key elements of tropospheric air pollution chemistry, as well as contributing to carbon cycle knowledge. Measurements are made hourly from geostationary (GEO) orbit, to capture the high variability present in the diurnal cycle of emissions and chemistry that are unobservable from current low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that measure once per day. The small product spatial footprint resolves pollution sources at sub-urban scale. Together, this temporal and spatial resolution improves emission inventories, monitors population exposure, and enables effective emission-control strategies.
TEMPO takes advantage of a commercial GEO host spacecraft to provide a modest cost mission that measures the spectra required to retrieve ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), formaldehyde (H2CO), glyoxal (C2H2O2), bromine monoxide (BrO), IO (iodine monoxide), water vapor, aerosols, cloud parameters, ultraviolet radiation, and foliage properties. TEMPO thus measures the major elements, directly or by proxy, in the tropospheric O3 chemistry cycle. Multi-spectral observations provide sensitivity to O3 in the lowermost troposphere, substantially reducing uncertainty in air quality predictions. TEMPO quantifies and tracks the evolution of aerosol loading. It provides these near-real-time air quality products that will be made publicly available. TEMPO will launch at a prime time to be the North American component of the global geostationary constellation of pollution monitoring together with the European Sentinel-4 (S4) and Korean Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) instruments.

Features of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) overlap. We aimed to determine whether staining for tissue biomarkers would differentiate EoE from GERD, ...suggesting utility for diagnosis of EoE.
In this case-control study, EoE patients defined by consensus guidelines were compared to GERD patients with eosinophils on esophageal biopsy. Immunohistochemistry was performed for major basic protein (MBP), eotaxin-3, leukotriene A4 hydrolase (LTA4H), and leukotriene C4 synthase (LTC4S). After masking, the maximum staining density (cells per mm(2)) was quantified for each marker and compared between groups. Receiver operator characteristic curves were constructed, and the area under the curve (AUC) calculated to assess the diagnostic utility of each of the biomarkers alone and in combination with eosinophil counts.
There were 51 EoE cases (mean age 24; mean 143 eosinophils per high-power field (eos per h.p.f.)) and 54 GERD controls (mean age 34; mean 20 eos per h.p.f.). The MBP density was higher in EoE than in GERD (1479 vs. 59 cells per mm(2); P<0.001), as was the eotaxin-3 density (2219 vs. 479; P<0.001). There were no differences for LTA4H and LTC4S. MBP density and eosinophil count correlated (R=0.81; P<0.001); correlation with eotaxin-3 was weaker (R=0.25; P=0.01). The AUC for diagnosis of EoE was 0.96 for MBP, 0.87 for eotaxin-3, 0.58 for LTA4H, 0.66 for LTC4S, and 0.99 for the combination of MBP, eotaxin-3, and eosinophil count.
Patients with EoE had substantially higher levels of MBP and eotaxin-3 staining than GERD patients. These markers may have utility as a diagnostic assay for EoE.
Osteoclasts resorb bone via the ruffled border, whose complex folds are generated by secretory lysosome fusion with bone-apposed plasma membrane. Lysosomal fusion with the plasmalemma results in ...acidification of the resorptive microenvironment and release of CatK to digest the organic matrix of bone. The means by which secretory lysosomes are directed to fuse with the ruffled border are enigmatic. We show that proteins essential for autophagy, including Atg5, Atg7, Atg4B, and LC3, are important for generating the osteoclast ruffled border, the secretory function of osteoclasts, and bone resorption in vitro and in vivo. Further, Rab7, which is required for osteoclast function, localizes to the ruffled border in an Atg5-dependent manner. Thus, autophagy proteins participate in polarized secretion of lysosomal contents into the extracellular space by directing lysosomes to fuse with the plasma membrane. These findings are in keeping with a putative link between autophagy genes and human skeletal homeostasis.
