Neutron stars are not only of astrophysical interest, but are also of great interest to nuclear physicists because their attributes can be used to determine the properties of the dense matter in ...their cores. One of the most informative approaches for determining the equation of state (EoS) of this dense matter is to measure both a star's equatorial circumferential radius Re and its gravitational mass M. Here we report estimates of the mass and radius of the isolated 205.53 Hz millisecond pulsar PSR J0030+0451 obtained using a Bayesian inference approach to analyze its energy-dependent thermal X-ray waveform, which was observed using the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). This approach is thought to be less subject to systematic errors than other approaches for estimating neutron star radii. We explored a variety of emission patterns on the stellar surface. Our best-fit model has three oval, uniform-temperature emitting spots and provides an excellent description of the pulse waveform observed using NICER. The radius and mass estimates given by this model are km and (68%). The independent analysis reported in the companion paper by Riley et al. explores different emitting spot models, but finds spot shapes and locations and estimates of Re and M that are consistent with those found in this work. We show that our measurements of Re and M for PSR J0030+0451 improve the astrophysical constraints on the EoS of cold, catalyzed matter above nuclear saturation density.
Perioperative fluid management impacts outcomes and plays a pivotal role in enhanced recovery pathways (ERPs). There have been major advances in understanding the effects of fluid therapy and ...administration during the perioperative period. Improving fluid management during this period leads to a decrease in complications, decrease in length of stay (LOS), and enhanced patient outcomes. It is important to consider preoperative and postoperative fluid management to be just as critical as intraoperative management given multiple associated benefits to the patients. Preoperative hydration with (complex) carbohydrate drinks up until 2 h before surgery is safe and should be encouraged, as this helps improve metabolism, decrease insulin resistance, reduce anxiety, and reduce nausea and vomiting. During the intraoperative period, the goals of fluid management are to maintain euvolemia using an individualized plan for fluid and haemodynamic management, matching the needs for monitoring with patient and surgical risk through goal-directed therapy (GDT). By combining the use of fluids and inotropes, GDT uses measurements and indicators of cardiac output and stroke volume to improve blood flow intraoperatively, and ultimately reduce LOS and complications. In the postoperative period, an early transition to oral hydration helps to enhance the conditions for healing and recovery from surgery. I.V. fluid therapy should be kept at a minimum, and urine output should not be the driving force for fluid administration. The optimization of perioperative fluid management is critical to ERPs as it helps improve pulmonary function, tissue oxygenation, gastrointestinal motility, and wound healing.
The hypothesis of phylogenetic niche conservatism proposes that most extant members of a clade remain in ancestral environments because expansion into new ecological space imposes a selectional load ...on a population. A prediction that follows is that local assemblages contain increasingly phylogenetically clustered subsets of species with increasing difference from the ancestral environment of a clade. We test this in Australian Meliphagidae, a continental radiation of birds that originated in wet, subtropical environments, but subsequently spread to drier environments as Australia became more arid during the late Cenozoic. We find local assemblages are increasingly phylogenetically clustered along a gradient of decreasing precipitation. The pattern is less clear along a temperature gradient. We develop a novel phyloclimatespace to visualise the expansion of some lineages into drier habitats. Although few species extend into arid regions, those that do occupy larger ranges and thus local species richness does not decline predictably with precipitation.
Supermassive black holes (SMBHs; mass is greater than or approximately 10 5 times that of the Sun) are known to exist at the center of most galaxies with sufficient stellar mass. In the local ...universe, it is possible to infer their properties from the surrounding stars or gas. However, at high redshifts we require active, continuous accretion to infer the presence of the SMBHs, which often comes in the form of long-term accretion in active galactic nuclei. SMBHs can also capture and tidally disrupt stars orbiting nearby, resulting in bright flares from otherwise quiescent black holes. Here, we report on a ∼200-second x-ray quasi-periodicity around a previously dormant SMBH located in the center of a galaxy at redshift z = 0.3534. This result may open the possibility of probing general relativity beyond our local universe.
We report on the first simultaneous Neutron Star Interior Composition Explore (NICER) and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations of the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary 4U ...1735−44, obtained in 2018 August. The source was at a luminosity of ∼1.8 (D/5.6 kpc)2 × 1037 erg s−1 in the 0.4-30 keV band. We account for the continuum emission with two different continuum descriptions that have been used to model the source previously. Despite the choice in continuum model, the combined passband reveals a broad Fe K line indicative of reflection in the spectrum. In order to account for the reflection spectrum we utilize a modified version of the reflection model relxill that is tailored for thermal emission from accreting NSs. Alternatively, we also use the reflection convolution model of rfxconv to model the reflected emission that would arise from a Comptonized thermal component for comparison. We determine that the innermost region of the accretion disk extends close to the innermost stable circular orbit (RISCO) at the 90% confidence level regardless of reflection model. Moreover, the current flux calibration of NICER is within 5% of the NuSTAR/FPMA(B).
At low temperatures, sufficiently small metallic and semiconductor devices exhibit the 'Coulomb blockade' effect, in which charge transport through the device occurs on an electron-by-electron basis. ...For example, a single electron on a metallic island can block the flow of another electron if the charging energy of the island greatly exceeds the thermal energy. The analogous effect of 'photon blockade' has been proposed for the transport of light through an optical system; this involves photon-photon interactions in a nonlinear optical cavity. Here we report observations of photon blockade for the light transmitted by an optical cavity containing one trapped atom, in the regime of strong atom-cavity coupling. Excitation of the atom-cavity system by a first photon blocks the transmission of a second photon, thereby converting an incident poissonian stream of photons into a sub-poissonian, anti-bunched stream. This is confirmed by measurements of the photon statistics of the transmitted field. Our observations of photon blockade represent an advance over traditional nonlinear optics and laser physics, into a regime with dynamical processes involving atoms and photons taken one-by-one.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent an attractive avenue for cellular therapies targeting degenerative diseases. MSC in vitro expansion is required in order to obtain therapeutic numbers during ...the manufacturing process. It is known that culture conditions impact cellular properties and behavior after in vivo transplantation. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the benefit of hypoxic culturing of human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells on cell fitness and whole genome expression and discussed its implication on cellular therapies targeting orthopedic diseases such as chronic lower back pain.
Human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMMSCs) were isolated from fresh human anticoagulated whole bone marrow and were cultured side by side in atmospheric (20% O
) and hypoxic (5% O
) oxygen partial pressure for up to 3 passages. Stem cell fitness was assessed by clonogenic assay, cell surface marker expression and differentiation potential. Whole genome expression was performed by mRNA sequencing. Data from clonogenic assays, cell surface marker by flow cytometry and gene expression by quantitative PCR were analyzed by two-tailed paired Student's t-test. Data from mRNA sequencing were aligned to hg19 using Tophat-2.0.13 and analyzed using Cufflinks-2.1.1.
Hypoxic culturing of hBMMSCs had positive effects on cell fitness, as evidenced by an increased clonogenicity and improved differentiation potential towards adipocyte and chondrocyte lineages. No difference in osteoblast differentiation or in cell surface markers were observed. Only a small subset of genes (34) were identified by mRNA sequencing to be significantly dysregulated by hypoxia. When clustered by biological function, these genes were associated with chondrogenesis and cartilage metabolism, inflammation and immunomodulation, cellular survival, migration and proliferation, vasculogenesis and angiogenesis.
Hypoxic culturing positively impacted hBMMSCs fitness and transcriptome, potentially improving inherent properties of these cells that are critical for the development of successful cellular therapies. Hypoxic culturing should be considered for the in vitro expansion of hBMMSCs during manufacturing of cellular therapies targeting orthopedic disorders such as lower back pain.
This paper describes the science motivation, measurement objectives, performance requirements, detailed design, approach and implementation, and calibration of the four Hot Plasma Composition ...Analyzers (HPCA) for the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. The HPCA is based entirely on electrostatic optics combining an electrostatic energy analyzer with a carbon-foil based time-of-flight analyzer. In order to fulfill mission requirements, the HPCA incorporates three unique technologies that give it very wide dynamic range capabilities essential to measuring minor ion species in the presence of extremely high proton fluxes found in the region of magnetopause reconnection. Dynamic range is controlled primarily by a novel radio frequency system analogous to an RF mass spectrometer. The RF, in combination with capabilities for high TOF event processing rates and high current micro-channel plates, ensures the dynamic range and sensitivity needed for accurate measurements of ion fluxes between ∼1 eV and 40 keV that are expected in the region of reconnection events. A third technology enhances mass resolution in the presence of high proton flux.
In order to calibrate the four HPCA instruments we have developed a unique ion calibration system. The system delivers a multi-species beam resolved to
M
/Δ
M
∼100 and current densities between 0.05 and 200 pA/cm
2
with a stability of ±5 %. The entire system is controlled by a dedicated computer synchronized with the HPCA ground support equipment. This approach results not only in accurate calibration but also in a comprehensive set of coordinated instrument and auxiliary data that makes analysis straightforward and ensures archival of all relevant data.
Understanding the natural dynamics of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and their response to global environmental change is essential for the prediction of future plant growth and ecosystem ...functions. We investigated the long‐term temporal dynamics and effect of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) and ozone (O₃) concentrations on AM fungal communities. Molecular methods were used to characterize the AM fungal communities of soybean (Glycine max) grown under elevated and ambient atmospheric concentrations of both CO₂and O₃within a free air concentration enrichment experiment in three growing seasons over 5 yr. Elevated CO₂altered the community composition of AM fungi, increasing the ratio of Glomeraceae to Gigasporaceae. By contrast, no effect of elevated O₃on AM fungal communities was detected. However, the greatest compositional differences detected were between years, suggesting that, at least in the short term, large‐scale interannual temporal dynamics are stronger mediators than atmospheric CO₂concentrations of AM fungal communities. We conclude that, although atmospheric change may significantly alter AM fungal communities, this effect may be masked by the influences of natural changes and successional patterns through time. We suggest that changes in carbon availability are important determinants of the community dynamics of AM fungi.
