The far infrared spectra of (100), (010), and (001)-oriented RDX single crystals were measured as the crystal was rotated about the axis perpendicular to the polarization plane of the incident ...radiation. Absorption measurements were taken at temperatures of both 20 K and 295 K for all rotations using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. A number of discrete absorptions were found ranging from 10-100 cm(-1) (0.3-3 THz). The absorptions are highly dependent on the orientation of the terahertz polarization with respect to crystallographic axes.

The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron–positron collider will result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgrounds in the interaction region. Understanding and mitigating these ...backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle II experiment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKEKB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also report on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions from synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds originating from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV electron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds forward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector.
The increasing number of genetic association studies conducted in multiple populations provides an unprecedented opportunity to study how the genetic architecture of complex phenotypes varies between ...populations, a problem important for both medical and population genetics. Here, we have developed a method for estimating the transethnic genetic correlation: the correlation of causal-variant effect sizes at SNPs common in populations. This methods takes advantage of the entire spectrum of SNP associations and uses only summary-level data from genome-wide association studies. This avoids the computational costs and privacy concerns associated with genotype-level information while remaining scalable to hundreds of thousands of individuals and millions of SNPs. We applied our method to data on gene expression, rheumatoid arthritis, and type 2 diabetes and overwhelmingly found that the genetic correlation was significantly less than 1. Our method is implemented in a Python package called Popcorn.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication after surgical fixation of acetabular fractures. Numerous strategies have been employed to prevent HO formation, but results are mixed and optimal treatment strategy remains controversial. The purpose of the study was to describe current national heterotopic ossification (HO) prophylaxis patterns among academic trauma centers, determine the association between prophylaxis type and radiographic HO, and identify if heterogeneity in treatment effects exist based on outcome risk strata.
We used data from a subset of participants enrolled in the Pragmatic Randomized Trial Evaluating Pre-Operative Alcohol Skin Solutions in Fractured Extremities (PREPARE) trial. We included only patients with closed AO-type 62 acetabular fractures that were surgically treated via a posterior (Kocher-Langenbeck), combined anterior and posterior, or extensile exposure. PREPARE Clinical Trial Registration Number: NCT03523962 Patient population This cohort study was nested within the Pragmatic Randomized Trial Evaluating Pre-Operative Alcohol Skin Solutions in Fractured Extremities (PREPARE) trial. The PREPARE trial is a multicenter cluster-randomized crossover trial evaluating the effectiveness of two alcohol-based pre-operative antiseptic skin solutions. All PREPARE trial clinical centers that enrolled at least one patient with a closed AO-type 62 acetabular fracture were invited to participate in the nested study.
277 patients from 20 level 1 and level 2 trauma centers in the U.S. and Canada were included in this study. 32 patients (12%) received indomethacin prophylaxis, 100 patients (36%) received XRT prophylaxis, and 145 patients (52%) received no prophylaxis. Administration of XRT was associated with a 68% reduction in the adjusted odds of overall HO (OR 0.32, 95% CI, 0.14 – 0.69, p = 0.005). The overall severe HO (Brooker classes III or IV) rate was 8% for the entire cohort; XRT reduced the rate of severe HO in high-risk patients only (p=0.03).
HO prophylaxis patterns after surgical fixation of acetabular fractures have changed dramatically over the last two decades. Most centers included in this study did not administer HO prophylaxis. XRT was associated with a marked reduction in the rate of overall HO and the rate of severe HO in high-risk patients. Randomized trials are needed to fully elucidate the potential benefit of XRT. Structured education programmes for individuals with Type 1 diabetes have become a recognised means of delivering the knowledge and skills necessary for optimal self-management of the condition. The ...Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) programme has been shown to improve biomedical (HbA(1c) and rates of severe hypoglycaemia) and psychosocial outcomes for up to 12 months following course delivery. The optimal way to support DAFNE graduates and maintain the benefits of the programme has not been established. We aimed to compare 2 different methods of follow-up of DAFNE graduates in a pragmatic clinical trial delivered in busy diabetes clinics on the island of Ireland.
Six participating centres were cluster randomised to deliver either group follow-up or a return to traditional one-to-one clinic visits. In the intervention arm group follow-up was delivered at 6 and 12 months post DAFNE training according to a curriculum developed for the study. In the control arm patients were seen individually in diabetes clinics as part of routine care. Study outcomes included HbA(1c) levels, self-reported rates of severe hypoglycaemia, body weight and measures of diabetes wellbeing and quality of life. These were measured at 6, 12 and 18 months after recruitment. Generalisability (external validity) was maximised by recruiting study participants from existing DAFNE waiting lists in each centre, by using broad inclusion criteria (including HbA(1c) values less than 13 percent with no lower limit) and by using existing clinic staff to deliver the training and follow-up. Internal validity and treatment fidelity were maximised by quality assuring the training of all DAFNE educators, by external peer review of the group follow-up sessions and by striving for full attendance at follow-up visits. Assays of HbA(1c) were undertaken in a central laboratory.
This pragmatic clinical trial evaluating group follow-up after a structured education programme has been designed to have broad generalisability. The results should inform how best to manage the well educated patient with Type 1 diabetes in the real world of clinical practice

Wolbachia are cytoplasmically inherited bacteria that cause a number of reproductive alterations in insects, including cytoplasmic incompatibility, an incompatibility between sperm and egg that ...results in loss of sperm chromosomes following fertilization. Wolbachia are estimated to infect 15-20% of all insect species, and also are common in arachnids, isopods and nematodes. Therefore, Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility could be an important factor promoting rapid speciation in invertebrates, although this contention is controversial. Here we show that high levels of bidirectional cytoplasmic incompatibility between two closely related species of insects (the parasitic wasps Nasonia giraulti and Nasonia longicornis) preceded the evolution of other postmating reproductive barriers. The presence of Wolbachia severely reduces the frequency of hybrid offspring in interspecies crosses. However, antibiotic curing of the insects results in production of hybrids. Furthermore, F1 and F2 hybrids are completely viable and fertile, indicating the absence of F1 and F2 hybrid breakdown. Partial interspecific sexual isolation occurs, yet it is asymmetric and incomplete. Our results indicate that Wolbachia-induced reproductive isolation occurred in the early stages of speciation in this system, before the evolution of other postmating isolating mechanisms (for example, hybrid inviability and hybrid sterility).
The neurological manifestations of sleeping sickness in man are attributed to the penetration of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and invasion of the central nervous system by Trypanosoma brucei ...gambiense and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. However, how African trypanosomes cross the BBB remains an unresolved issue. We have examined the traversal of African trypanosomes across the human BBB using an in vitro BBB model system constructed of human brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) grown on Costar Transwell™ inserts. Human-infective T. b. gambiense strain IL 1852 was found to cross human BMECs far more readily than the animal-infective Trypanosoma brucei brucei strains 427 and TREU 927. Tsetse fly–infective procyclic trypomastigotes did not cross the human BMECs either alone or when coincubated with bloodstream-form T. b. gambiense. After overnight incubation, the integrity of the human BMEC monolayer measured by transendothelial electrical resistance was maintained on the inserts relative to the controls when the endothelial cells were incubated with T. b. brucei. However, decreases in electrical resistance were observed when the BMEC-coated inserts were incubated with T. b. gambiense. Light and electron microscopy studies revealed that T. b. gambiense initially bind at or near intercellular junctions before crossing the BBB paracellularly. This is the first demonstration of paracellular traversal of African trypanosomes across the BBB. Further studies are required to determine the mechanism of BBB traversal by these parasites at the cellular and molecular level.
