Seven species of Lepidoptera—Tortricidae: Adoxophyes honmai Yasuda, Lobesia aeolopa Meyrick and Strepsicrates semicanella (Walker); Geometridae: Ectropis excellens (Butler) and Hyposidra talaca ...(Walker); and Lymantriidae: Orgyia postica (Walker) and Lymantria dispar albescens Hori et Umeno—were reared from larvae injurious to Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtaceae) cultivated in Japan. A. honmai, L. aeolopa, E. excellens, H. talaca and Ly. dispar albescens were newly recorded as pests of Eucalyptus spp. Strepsicrates rhothia (Meyrick), which had been considered a pest of Psidium guajava in Japan, was shown from the male genitalic characters to be really St. semicanella, distributed in Malaysia and Australia. The record of occurrence of St. rhothia in Japan was expunged. St. semicanella, hitherto recorded in Japan only from Okinawa, was recorded from a greenhouse of cultivated eucalyptus trees at Nagoya, Honshu. The immatures were inferred to have invaded the greenhouse from young eucalyptus leaves transferred from Nago, Okinawa-jima Is. Larvae of the three tortricid and two geometrid species were illustrated, and the distinguishing characters among the tortricids were given. The genitalia and immature stages of St. semicanella were described for the first time.

Dieulafoy’s ulcer is a cause of life‐threatening upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. With advanced endoscopic procedures, Dieulafoy’s ulcer is easily diagnosed and treated. However, a few patients ...still need surgery to stop bleeding or they will die of shock. Further improved procedures are therefore required to treat bleeding in Dieulafoy’s ulcer. A 77‐year‐old man was admitted to our hospital with hematemesis and general malaise. He had moderate anemia and azotemia but no past history of gastric ulcer. He was diagnosed with Dieulafoy’s ulcer endoscopically. Dieulafoy’s ulcer was ligated with an endoscopic variceal ligation kit without surgery. Although an ulcer was found at the ligation point after 1 week, the ulcer changed to the scar on administration of Histamine H2 receptor blockers. The patient has suffered no recurrent ulcer and no bleeding for 24 months. Endoscopic variceal ligation may be an alternative new method for hemostasis of Dieulafoy’s ulcer.
A new modeling technique for arriving at the three dimensional (3-D) structure of an RNA stem-loop has been developed based on a conformatlonal search by a genetic algorithm and the following ...refinement by energy minimization. The genetic algorithm simultaneously optimizes a population of conformations in the predefined conformational space and generates 3-D models of RNA. The fitness function to be optimized by the algorithm has been defined to reflect the satisfaction of known conformational constraints. In addition to a term for distance constraints, the fitness function contains a term to constrain each local conformation near to a prepared template conformation. The technique has been applied to the two loops of tRNA, the anticodon loop and the T-loop, and has found good models with small root mean square deviations from the crystal structure. Slightly different models have also been found for the anticodon loop. The analysis of a collection of alternative models obtained has revealed statistical features of local variations at each base position.
