Evidence for a large-scale supergalactic cosmic-ray multiplet (arrival directions correlated with energy) structure is reported for ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) energies above 1019 eV using 7 ...years of data from the Telescope Array (TA) surface detector and updated to 10 years. Previous energy-position correlation studies have made assumptions regarding magnetic field shapes and strength, and UHECR composition. Here the assumption tested is that, because the supergalactic plane is a fit to the average matter density of the local large-scale structure, UHECR sources and intervening extragalactic magnetic fields are correlated with this plane. This supergalactic deflection hypothesis is tested by the entire field-of-view (FOV) behavior of the strength of intermediate-scale energy-angle correlations. These multiplets are measured in spherical cap section bins (wedges) of the FOV to account for coherent and random magnetic fields. The structure found is consistent with supergalactic deflection, the previously published energy spectrum anisotropy results of the TA (the Hotspot and Coldspot), and toy-model simulations of a supergalactic magnetic sheet. The seven year data posttrial significance of this supergalactic structure of multiplets appearing by chance, on an isotropic sky, is found by Monte Carlo simulation to be 4.2 . The 10 years of data posttrial significance is 4.1 . Furthermore, the starburst galaxy M82 is shown to be a possible source of the TA Hotspot, and an estimate of the supergalactic magnetic field using UHECR measurements is presented.
During NMDA receptor-mediated long-term potentiation (LTP), synapses are strengthened by trafficking AMPA receptors to the synapse through a calcium-dependent kinase cascade following activation of ...NMDA receptors. This process results in a long-lasting increase in synaptic strength that is thought to be a cellular mechanism for learning and memory. Over the past 20 years, many signaling pathways have been shown to be involved in the induction and maintenance of LTP including the MAPK cascade. However, the crucial link between NMDA receptors and the signaling cascades involved in AMPA receptor trafficking during LTP remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to identify and characterize NMDA receptor signaling proteins that link NMDA receptor activation to downstream signaling pathways that lead to trafficking of AMPA receptors. We have identified a novel NMDA receptor interacting signaling protein, AGAP3. AGAP3 contains multiple signaling domains, a GTPase-like domain, a pleckstrin homology domain, and an ArfGAP domain, and exists as a component of the NMDA receptor complex. In addition, we found that AGAP3 regulates NMDA receptor-mediated Ras/ERK and Arf6 signaling pathways during chemically induced LTP in rat primary neuronal cultures. Finally, knocking down AGAP3 expression leads to occlusion of AMPA receptor trafficking during chemically induced LTP. Together, AGAP3 is an essential signaling component of the NMDA receptor complex that links NMDA receptor activation to AMPA receptor trafficking.
Background
Defaecatory function is often poor after anterior resection. Denervation of the neorectum following high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) is a possible cause of impaired ...defaecatory function. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to clarify whether the level of ligation of the IMA in patients with rectal cancer affects defaecatory function.
Methods
Between 2008 and 2011, patients who underwent anterior resection for rectal cancer were randomized to receive either high or low ligation of the IMA. The primary endpoint was to demonstrate the superiority of low ligation in terms of defaecatory function.
Results
One hundred patients were enrolled in the study; 51 were randomized to high ligation of the IMA and 49 to low ligation. There were no differences between the groups in terms of clinical data, except tumour stage, which was more advanced in the high‐ligation group (P = 0·046). Nor were there any differences in defaecatory function, self‐assessment of defaecation, Faecal Incontinence Quality of Life scale or continence score between groups at 3 months and 1 year. The number of harvested lymph nodes was similar. The rate of symptomatic anastomotic leakage was 16 per cent in the high‐ligation group and 10 per cent in the low‐ligation group (P = 0·415).
Conclusion
The level of ligation of the IMA in patients with rectal cancer did not affect defaecatory function or the incidence of postoperative complications. Registration number: NCT00701012 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov).

Aims.
We present an improved analytical model to predict the Ly
α
forest at the field level in redshift space from the dark matter field, expanding upon the widely used Fluctuating Gunn-Peterson Approximation (FGPA). Instead of assuming a unique universal relation over the whole considered cosmic volume, we introduce a dependence on the cosmic web environment (knots, filaments, sheets, and voids) in the model, thereby effectively accounting for nonlocal bias. Furthermore, we include a detailed treatment of velocity bias in the redshift space distortion modeling, allowing the velocity bias to be cosmic-web-dependent.
Methods.
We first mapped the dark matter field from real to redshift space through a particle-based relation including velocity bias, depending on the cosmic web classification of the dark matter field in real space. We then formalized an appropriate functional form for our model, building upon the traditional FGPA and including a cutoff and a boosting factor mimicking a threshold and inverse-threshold bias effect, respectively, with model parameters depending on the cosmic web classification in redshift space. Eventually, we fit the coefficients of the model via an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme.
Results.
We find evidence for a significant difference between the same model parameters in different environments, suggesting that for the investigated setup the simple standard FGPA is not able to adequately predict the Ly
α
forest in the different cosmic web regimes. We reproduce the summary statistics of the reference cosmological hydrodynamic simulation that we use for comparison, yielding an accurate mean transmitted flux, probability distribution function, 3D power spectrum, and bispectrum. In this paper, we present the first high‐speed video observation of a cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash and its associated downward‐directed Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission of ...the event was observed by a high‐speed video camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with the Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric‐field fast antenna, and the National Lightning Detection Network. The cloud‐to‐ground flash associated with the observed TGF was formed by a fast downward leader followed by a very intense return stroke peak current of −154 kA. The TGF occurred while the downward leader was below cloud base, and even when it was halfway in its propagation to ground. The suite of gamma‐ray and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offer us detailed information and therefore a unique look at the TGF phenomena.

This study provides the very first simultaneous observations of a downward‐directed terrestrial gamma‐ray flash (TGF) together with its associated cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash using a high‐speed camera in addition to gamma‐ray and radio measurements. In this paper we report the first close, high‐resolution observations of downward‐directed terrestrial gamma‐ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large‐area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, ...obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud‐to‐ground and low‐altitude intracloud flashes and that the IBPs are produced by a newly identified streamer‐based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated by embedded spark‐like transient conducting events (TCEs) within the fast streamer system and potentially also by individual fast streamers themselves. The TCEs are inferred to be the cause of impulsive sub‐pulses that are characteristic features of classic IBP sferics. Additional development of the avalanches would be facilitated by the enhanced electric field ahead of the advancing front of the fast negative breakdown. In addition to showing the nature of IBPs and their enigmatic sub‐pulses, the observations also provide a possible explanation for the unsolved question of how the streamer to leader transition occurs during the initial negative breakdown, namely, as a result of strong currents flowing in the final stage of successive IBPs, extending backward through both the IBP itself and the negative streamer breakdown preceding the IBP.

Pharyngeal swallowing is controlled by synaptic interactions within a swallowing central pattern generator (sw-CPG) that is composed of a dorsal and a ventral swallowing group (VSG). Here, we used electrical stimulation (10 s) of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN; 20 Hz; pulse width: 100 μs) to explore the role of the VSG in an arterially-perfused brainstem preparation of rats. To investigate the effects of pharmacological lesion (local microinjection of an GABA(A)-R agonist) of the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA), a designated component of the VSG, we recorded phrenic (PNA) and vagal nerve (VNA) activities. Control SLN stimulation with stepwise increasing stimulus intensities (from 20 μA to 160 μA) elicited robust suppression of PNA and evoked sequential swallowing activity in the VNA. Lesioning of the NRA had no effect on the pattern of pharyngeal swallowing, but significantly increased the sensory gating of SLN inputs. We conclude that the NRA is not part of the VSG, but appears to have important roles for the central gating of swallowing.
Introduction: Dysphagia is a newly acknowledged multifactorial risk factor for the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Effective screening methods are awaited. We performed ...a prospective study to evaluate the impact of musculature and breathing-swallowing discoordination on the exacerbation of COPD with a novel swallowing monitor using a piezoelectric sensor. Patients and Methods: This was the second part of a prospective study of patients with COPD from the Iizuka COPD cohort. Seventy patients with stable COPD underwent dysphagia screening, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and tongue pressure measurements, and swallowed 3 mL and 30 mL of water while wearing a swallowing monitor. Patients were followed for one year. Results: During the follow-up period, 28 patients experienced exacerbations (E group), and 42 had none (non-E group). There was no significant difference in tongue pressure measurements between the two groups. The SMI in the E group was significantly lower than that in the non-E group. Among the swallowing monitor measurements, the 3 mL I-SW% (the percentage of swallows in which inspiration preceded the swallow out of ten 3 mL swallows) was significantly lower in the E group than in the non-E group. Conclusion: Breathing-swallowing coordination is an independent factor related to the exacerbation of COPD. Not only the presence of discoordination but also the inability to produce an airway protection mechanism may contribute to more frequent aspiration and exacerbations.
