We use optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of nearby supernova (SN) host galaxies (0.005 <z< 0.03) provided by the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) Survey with the goal of finding ...correlations in the environmental parameters at the location of different SN types. In this first study of a series we focus on the properties related with star formation (SF). We recover the sequence in association of different SN types to the star-forming regions by using several indicators of the ongoing and recent SF related to both the ionized gas and the stellar populations. While the total ongoing SF is on average the same for the three SN types, SNe Ibc/IIb tend to occur closer to star-forming regions and in higher SF density locations than SNe II and SNe Ia; the latter shows the weakest correlation. SNe Ia host galaxies have masses that are on average ~0.3−0.8 dex higher than those of the core collapse (CC) SNe hosts because the SNe Ia hosts contain alarger fraction of old stellar populations. Using the recent SN Ia delay-time distribution and the SFHs of the galaxies, we show that the SN Ia hosts in our sample are expected to produce twice as many SNe Ia as the CC SN hosts. Since both types occur in hosts with a similar SF rate and hence similar CC SN rate, this can explain the mass difference between the SN Ia and CC SN hosts, and reinforces the finding that at least part of the SNe Ia originate from very old progenitors. By comparing the mean SFH of the eight least massive galaxies with that of the massive SF SN Ia hosts, we find that the low-mass galaxies formed their stars during a longer time (0.65%, 24.46%, and 74.89% in the intervals 0–0.42 Gyr, 0.42–2.4 Gyr, and >2.4 Gyr, respectively) than the massive SN Ia hosts (0.04%, 2.01%, and 97.95% in these intervals). We estimate that the low-mass galaxies produce ten times fewer SNe Ia and three times fewer CC SNe than the high-mass group. Therefore the ratio between the number of CC SNe and SNe Ia is expected to increase with decreasing galaxy mass. CC SNe tend to explode at positions with younger stellar populations than the galaxy average, but the galaxy properties at SNe Ia locations are one average the same as the global galaxy properties.
During the last decade, some changes in the epidemiology of invasive infections have been reported; however, specific studies with patient-level data are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe ...and evaluate the epidemiologic changes in bloodstream infections (BSI) during the last decade in Andalucía, Spain.
Data from two prospective cohorts of BSI in adults with the same methodology performed 10 years apart in 11 hospitals (eight tertiary and three community) in Andalucía, Spain, were compared; the 2006–7 cohort study was performed between October 2006 and March 2007, and the 2016–17 cohort study was performed between October 2016 and March 2017. Population-based incidence rates were calculated and extrapolated for 1 year. Relative risk ratios were calculated between the 2 periods. Multivariate analyses were performed by logistic regression.
Overall, 1262 episodes of BSI were included, 563 (44.6%) in 2006–7 and 699 (55.3%) in 2016–17. Multivariate models selected the following changes in patients' features in 2016–17, after controlling for type of acquisition: higher age (odds ratio (OR) = 1.02; 95% confidence interval CI 1.01–1.03), lower urinary catheter (OR = 0.37; 95% CI, 0.26–0.48) and lower Pitt score (OR = 0.76; 95% CI, 0.71–0.82). Adjusted estimations considering patients' features and exposure to procedures showed a reduction in coagulase-negative staphylococci (OR = 0.47; 95% CI, 0.32–0.69), and an increase in Proteus spp. (OR = 3.12; 95% CI, 1.18–8.23) and Candida spp. (OR = 3.01; 95% CI, 1.03–8.86).
We found relevant epidemiologic changes in BSI in our area, including rates, frequency of acquisition types, changes in patient's profiles and aetiologic agents.

Behavioral and anatomical sex-related differences have been traditionally found in decision-making processes assessed by Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). So far, the administration of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over orbitofrontal regions has shown an enhancing effect over decision-making. However, it is unknown whether there is a sex-dependent effect of stimulation in decision-making, a key question considering previous differences between men and women in IGT and the influence of individual differences in tDCS. The present study examines, at first time, the interaction between sex and tDCS in decision-making. For that aim, in a first experimental phase, ninety-two healthy participants performed the IGT. In a second phase, sixty-one participants received 20 min of anodal or sham tDCS over the right orbitofrontal cortex (rOFC) in a single-session pre-post sham-controlled study. To support the focality of the montage, a Stop Signal Task (SST) was used as a control task and also a numerical simulation of current flow distribution was performed. According to literature, in the first phase, results showed that men outperformed women in the IGT. In the second phase, the stimulation varied the IGT performance according to a sex specific manner: anodal tDCS increased the IGT performance in women, while in men; the stimulation did not produce any effect. Results were mediated by sex-specific morphological differences. These results highlight the necessity to consider the interaction of sex with the effect of the stimulation in future tDCS protocols, specifically in future clinical studies.
In the past decade, the observations of diffuse radio synchrotron emission toward galaxy clusters revealed cosmic-ray (CR) electrons and magnetic fields on megaparsec scales. However, their origin ...remains poorly understood to date, and several models have been discussed in the literature. CR protons are also expected to accumulate during the formation of clusters and probably contribute to the production of these high-energy electrons. In order to understand the physics of CRs in clusters, combining of observations at various wavelengths is particularly relevant. The exploitation of such data requires using a self-consistent approach including both the thermal and the nonthermal components, so that it is capable of predicting observables associated with the multiwavelength probes at play, in particular in the radio, millimeter, X-ray, and
γ
-ray bands. We develop and describe such a self-consistent modeling framework, called
MINOT
(modeling the intracluster medium (non-)thermal content and observable prediction tools) and make this tool available to the community.
MINOT
models the intracluster diffuse components of a cluster (thermal and nonthermal) as spherically symmetric. It therefore focuses on CRs associated with radio halos. The spectral properties of the cluster CRs are also modeled using various possible approaches. All the thermodynamic properties of a cluster can be computed self-consistently, and the particle physics interactions at play are processed using a framework based on the
Naima
software. The multiwavelength observables (spectra, profiles, flux, and images) are computed based on the relevant physical process, according to the cluster location (sky and redshift), and based on the sampling defined by the user. With a standard personal computer, the computing time for most cases is far shorter than one second and it can reach about one second for the most complex models. This makes
MINOT
suitable for instance for Monte Carlo analyses. We describe the implementation of
MINOT
and how to use it. We also discuss the different assumptions and approximations that are involved and provide various examples regarding the production of output products at different wavelengths. As an illustration, we model the clusters Abell 1795, Abell 2142, and Abell 2255 and compare the
MINOT
predictions to literature data. While
MINOT
was originally build to simulate and model data in the
γ
-ray band, it can be used to model the cluster thermal and nonthermal physical processes for a wide variety of datasets in the radio, millimeter, X-ray, and
γ
-ray bands, as well as the neutrino emission.
Aims. Polarisation observations of circumstellar dust and molecular (thermal and maser) lines provide unique information about dust properties and magnetic fields in circumstellar envelopes of ...evolved stars. Methods. We use Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 5 science verification observations of the red supergiant VY CMa to study the polarisation of SiO thermal/maser lines and dust continuum at ~1.7 mm wavelength. We analyse both linear and circular polarisation and derive the magnetic field strength and structure, assuming the polarisation of the lines originates from the Zeeman effect, and that of the dust originates from aligned dust grains. We also discuss other effects that could give rise to the observed polarisation. Results. We detect, for the first time, significant polarisation (~3%) of the circumstellar dust emission at millimeter wavelengths. The polarisation is uniform with an electric vector position angle of ~8°. Varying levels of linear polarisation are detected for the J = 4 − 328SiO v = 0, 1, 2, and 29SiO v = 0, 1 lines, with the strongest polarisation fraction of ~30% found for the 29SiO v = 1 maser. The linear polarisation vectors rotate with velocity, consistent with earlier observations. We also find significant (up to ~1%) circular polarisation in several lines, consistent with previous measurements. We conclude that the detection is robust against calibration and regular instrumental errors, although we cannot yet fully rule out non-standard instrumental effects. Conclusions. Emission from magnetically aligned grains is the most likely origin of the observed continuum polarisation. This implies that the dust is embedded in a magnetic field >13 mG. The maser line polarisation traces the magnetic field structure. The magnetic field in the gas and dust is consistent with an approximately toroidal field configuration, but only higher angular resolution observations will be able to reveal more detailed field structure. If the circular polarisation is due to Zeeman splitting, it indicates a magnetic field strength of ~1–3 Gauss, consistent with previous maser observations.

Social interaction involves neural activity in prefrontal cortex, septum, hippocampus, amygdala and hypothalamus. Notably, these areas all receive projections from the nucleus incertus (NI) in the pontine tegmentum. Therefore, we investigated the effect of excitotoxic lesions of NI neurons in adult male, Wistar rats on performance in a social discrimination test, and associated changes in immediate-early gene protein levels. NI was lesioned with quinolinic acid, and after recovery, rats underwent two trials in the 3-chamber test. In the first trial, NI-lesioned and sham-lesioned rats spent longer exploring a conspecific than an inanimate object. By contrast, in the second trial, NI-lesioned rats visited the familiar and novel conspecific chambers equally, whereas sham-lesioned rats spent longer engaging with the novel rat. Quantification of Fos- and Egr-1-immunoreactivity (IR) levels in brain areas implicated in social behaviour, revealed that social encounter and NI lesion produced complex, differential changes. For example, Egr-1-IR was broadly decreased in several amygdala nuclei in NI-lesioned rats relative to sham, but Fos-IR levels were unaltered. In hippocampus, NI-lesioned rats displayed decreased Fos-IR in CA2 and CA3, while Egr-1-IR was increased in the polymorphic dentate gyrus, CA1, CA2 and subiculum of NI-lesioned rats, relative to sham. Social encounter-related Egr-1-IR was also decreased in septum and anterior and lateral hypothalamus of NI-lesioned rats. Overall, these data suggest NI networks can modulate the activity of sensory, emotional and executive brain areas involved in social recognition, with a likely involvement of neuronal Egr-1 activation in amygdala, septum and hypothalamus, and Erg-1 inhibition in hippocampus.
We present the discovery of a companion near the deuterium-burning mass limit located at a very wide distance, at an angular separation of lambda 6 double prime + 0.1 double prime (projected distance ...of similar to 670 AU) from UScoCTIO 108, a brown dwarf of the very young Upper Scorpius association. Optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy confirm the cool nature of both objects, with spectral types of M7 and M9.5, respectively, and that they are bona fide members of the association, showing low gravity and features of youth. Their masses, estimated from the comparison of their bolometric luminosities and theoretical models for the age range of the association, are 60 plus or minus 20 and 14 super(+) sub(-) super(2) sub(8) super(M) sub(Jup), respectively. The existence of this object around a brown dwarf at this wide orbit suggests that the companion is unlikely to have formed in a disk based on current planet formation models. Because this system is rather weakly bound, they probably did not form through dynamical ejection of stellar embryos.
The epidemiological surveillance of contact dermatitis is one of the objectives of the Spanish Registry of Research in Contact Dermatitis and Cutaneous Allergy. Knowing whether the prevalence of ...positive tests to the different allergens changes over time is important for this monitoring process.
To describe the various temporary trends in allergen positivity in the GEIDAC standard series from 2018 through December 31, 2022.
This was a multicenter, observational trial of consecutive patients analyzed via patch tests as part of the study of possible allergic contact dermatitises collected prospectively within the Spanish Registry of Research in Contact Dermatitis and Cutaneous Allergy. The data was analyzed using 2 statistical tests: one homogeneity test (to describe the changes seen over time) and one trend test (to see whether the changes described followed a linear trend).
A total of 11327 patients were included in the study. Overall, the allergens associated with a highest sensitization were nickel sulfate, methylisothiazolinone, cobalt chloride, methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone, and fragrance mix i. A statistically significant decrease was found in the percentage of methylisothiazolinone positive tests across the study years with an orderly trend.
Although various changes were seen in the sensitizations trends to several allergens of the standard testing, it became obvious that a high sensitization to nickel, methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone and fragrances mix i remained. Only a significant downward trend was seen for methylisothiazolinone.
RESUMEN Objetivo: En la lumbalgia mecánica por síndrome facetario lumbar están indicadas como opciones terapéuticas los bloqueos periarticulares e intrarticulares de las articulaciones facetarias ...lumbares, así como el bloqueo nervioso del ramo medial de la raíz o ramo posterior del nervio raquídeo. El bloqueo nervioso del ramo medial puede llevarse a cabo mediante control ecográfico o radioscópico. El objetivo de este estudio es valorar si existen diferencias en la eficacia analgésica del bloqueo en función de la técnica de imagen con la que se lleva a cabo (ecografía frente a radioscopia-fluoroscopia). Pacientes y método: Se ha realizado un estudio clínico transversal durante el mes de noviembre de 2020, analizando los bloqueos facetarios realizados en la Unidad del Dolor del Hospital Universitario Clínico de Salamanca entre mayo de 2018 y septiembre de 2020. La muestra analizada cuenta con 315 pacientes, de los cuales 212 fueron sometidos a bloqueo facetario ecoguiado en consulta y 103 se realizaron bajo control radioscópico en el quirófano. Se ha evaluado la medida del dolor inicial, previo al bloqueo, mediante la escala analógica visual (EVA inicial), así como la EVA final y el porcentaje de mejoría subjetiva recogido en los 15 días posteriores a la realización de la intervención, valorando sus diferencias en función de la técnica de imagen empleada para su realización. Resultados: Los valores de EVA final de los pacientes que se realizaron el bloqueo mediante radioscopia y la de aquellos que lo realizaron ecoguiado fue similar, con un resultado final de 3,5 (mediana), así como el porcentaje de mejoría subjetiva que también fue similar en ambos grupos, alcanzando esta el 50 %. Conclusiones: No existen diferencias en la eficacia analgésica del bloqueo facetario lumbar en función de la técnica de imagen empleada para su realización: radioscopia-fluoroscopia o ecografía.
