We report phase-programmable Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) which produces up to 113 photon detection events out of a 144-mode photonic circuit. A new high-brightness and scalable quantum light source ...is developed, exploring the idea of stimulated emission of squeezed photons, which has simultaneously near-unity purity and efficiency. This GBS is programmable by tuning the phase of the input squeezed states. The obtained samples are efficiently validated by inferring from computationally friendly subsystems, which rules out hypotheses including distinguishable photons and thermal states. We show that our GBS experiment passes a nonclassicality test based on inequality constraints, and we reveal nontrivial genuine high-order correlations in the GBS samples, which are evidence of robustness against possible classical simulation schemes. This photonic quantum computer, Jiuzhang 2.0, yields a Hilbert space dimension up to ∼ 1043, and a sampling rate ∼ 1024 faster than using brute-force simulation on classical supercomputers.
Background and Aim
Remimazolam tosilate (RT) is a new short‐acting GABA(A) receptor agonist, having potential to be an effective option for procedural sedation. Here, we aimed to compare the efficacy ...and safety of RT with propofol in patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Methods
This positive‐controlled, non‐inferiority, phase III trial recruited patients at 17 centers, between September 2017 and November 2017. A total of 384 patients scheduled to undergo upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were randomly assigned to receive RT or propofol. Primary endpoint was the success rate of sedation. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded to evaluate safety.
Results
The success rate of sedation in the RT group was non‐inferior to that in the propofol group (97.34% vs 100.00%; difference in rate −2.66%, 95% CI −4.96 to −0.36, meeting criteria for non‐inferiority). Patients in the RT group had longer time to adequate sedation (P < 0.0001) but shorter time to fully alert (P < 0.0001) than that in the propofol group. The incidences of hypotension (13.04% vs 42.86%, P < 0.0001), treatment‐related hypotension (0.54% vs 5.82%, P < 0.0001), and respiratory depression (1.09% vs 6.88%, P = 0.0064) were significantly lower in the RT group. AEs were reported in 74 (39.15%) patients in the RT group and 114 (60.32%) patients in the propofol group, with significant difference (P < 0.0001).
Conclusion
This trial established non‐inferior sedation success rate of RT compared with propofol. RT allows faster recovery from sedation compared with propofol. The safety profile is favorable and appears to be superior to propofol, indicating that it was feasible and well tolerated for patients.
We report an experiment to test quantum interference, entanglement, and nonlocality using two dissimilar photon sources, the Sun and a semiconductor quantum dot on the Earth, which are separated by ...∼150 million kilometers. By making the otherwise vastly distinct photons indistinguishable in all degrees of freedom, we observe time-resolved two-photon quantum interference with a raw visibility of 0.796(17), well above the 0.5 classical limit, providing unambiguous evidence of the quantum nature of thermal light. Further, using the photons with no common history, we demonstrate postselected two-photon entanglement with a state fidelity of 0.826(24) and a violation of Bell inequality by 2.20(6). The experiment can be further extended to a larger scale using photons from distant stars and open a new route to quantum optics experiments at an astronomical scale.
Two-dimensional materials provide extraordinary opportunities for exploring phenomena arising in atomically thin crystals. Beginning with the first isolation of graphene, mechanical exfoliation has ...been a key to provide high-quality two-dimensional materials, but despite improvements it is still limited in yield, lateral size and contamination. Here we introduce a contamination-free, one-step and universal Au-assisted mechanical exfoliation method and demonstrate its effectiveness by isolating 40 types of single-crystalline monolayers, including elemental two-dimensional crystals, metal-dichalcogenides, magnets and superconductors. Most of them are of millimeter-size and high-quality, as shown by transfer-free measurements of electron microscopy, photo spectroscopies and electrical transport. Large suspended two-dimensional crystals and heterojunctions were also prepared with high-yield. Enhanced adhesion between the crystals and the substrates enables such efficient exfoliation, for which we identify a gold-assisted exfoliation method that underpins a universal route for producing large-area monolayers and thus supports studies of fundamental properties and potential application of two-dimensional materials.
A series of ethylenediamine (EDA)-functionalized magnetic polymers (EDA-MPs) have been prepared via suspension polymerization with the usage amount of the functional monomer glycidylmethacrylate ...(GMA) varied during the suspension polymerization procedure. The EDA-MPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry analysis (TG-DTA), Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and elementary analyzer (EA). The adsorption properties of the EDA-MPs for the removal of Cr(VI) in wastewater were deeply studied. The results showed the adsorption efficiency was highly pH dependent and decreased with the increasing of initial concentration of Cr(VI). The adsorption data taken at the optimized condition, i.e., 35 degrees C and pH of 2.5 were well fitted with the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities (q(m)) of EDA-MPs to Cr(VI) were highly related to the contents of EDA-MPs, i.e., the q(m) of EDA-MPs to Cr(VI) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm increased from 32.15 to 61.35 mg g(-1) with the increasing of the usage amount of GMA. The adsorption kinetic data were modeled by the pseudo-second-order rate equation, and the adsorption of Cr(VI) by all the present EDA-MPs reached equilibrium in 60 min.
Electrochromic devices have attracted considerable interest for smart windows. However, current development suffers from the requirement of the external power sources and rigid ITO substrate, which ...not only causes additional energy consumption but also limits their applications in flexible devices. Inspired by galvanic cell, we demonstrate a self-powered flexible electrochromic device by integrating Ag/W18O49 nanowire film with the Al sheet. The Ag nanowire film first acted as the electrode to replace the ITO substrate, then coupled with the Al sheet to induce an open-circuit voltage of ∼0.83 V, which is high enough to drive the coloration of W18O49 nanowires. Remarkably, the flexible self-powered electrochromic device only expends ∼6.8 mg/cm2 of the Al sheet after 450 electrochromic switching cycles and the size can be easily expanded with an area of 20 × 20 cm2, offering significant potential applications for the next generation of flexible electrochromic smart window.
To circumvent the devastating pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) infection, a humanized decoy antibody (ACE2‐Fc fusion protein) was designed to target the ...interaction between viral spike protein and its cellular receptor, angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). First, we demonstrated that ACE2‐Fc could specifically abrogate virus replication by blocking the entry of SARS‐CoV‐2 spike‐expressing pseudotyped virus into both ACE2‐expressing lung cells and lung organoids. The impairment of viral entry was not affected by virus variants, since efficient inhibition was also observed in six SARS‐CoV‐2 clinical strains, including the D614G variants which have been shown to exhibit increased infectivity. The preservation of peptidase activity also enables ACE2‐Fc to reduce the angiotensin II‐mediated cytokine cascade. Furthermore, this Fc domain of ACE2‐Fc was shown to activate NK cell degranulation after co‐incubation with Spike‐expressing H1975 cells. These promising characteristics potentiate the therapeutic prospects of ACE2‐Fc as an effective treatment for COVID‐19.

Site‐specific modification of proteins with synthetic fluorescent tag effectively improves the resolution of imaging, and such a labeling method with negligible three‐dimensional structural ...perturbations and minimal impact on the biological functions of proteins is of high interest to dissect the high‐resolution activities of biomolecules in complex systems. To this end, several non‐emissive iridium(III) complexes Ir(C−N)2(H2O)2+OTF− (C−N denotes various cyclometalated ligands) were designed and synthesized. These complexes were tested for attaching a protein by coordinating to H/X (HisMet, HisHis, and HisCys) that are separated by i and i+4 in α‐helix. Replacement of the two labile water ligands in the iridium(III) complex by a protein HisHis pair increases the luminescent intensity up to over 100 folds. This labeling approach has been demonstrated in a highly specific and efficient manner in a number of proteins, and it is also feasible for labeling target proteins in cell lysates.

Ergothioneine (EGT) has a unique antioxidant ability and diverse beneficial effects on human health. But the content of EGT is very low in its natural producing organisms such as Mycobacterium ...smegmatis and mushrooms. Therefore, it is necessary to highly efficient heterologous production of EGT in food-grade yeasts such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Two EGT biosynthetic genes were cloned from the mushroom Grifola frondosa and successfully heterologously expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae EC1118 strain in this study. By optimization of the fermentation conditions of the engineered strain S. cerevisiae EC1118, the 11.80 mg/L of EGT production was obtained. With daily addition of 1% glycerol to the culture medium in the fermentation process, the EGT production of the engineered strain S. cerevisiae EC1118 can reach up to 20.61 mg/L. A successful EGT de novo biosynthetic system of S. cerevisiae containing only two genes from mushroom Grifola frondosa was developed in this study. This system provides promising prospects for the large scales production of EGT for human health.
