The phase diagram of
p-dibromobenzene-
m-aminophenol system, determined by the thaw–melt method, shows the formation of a eutectic at 86.8 °C and a monotectic at 120.0 °C at 0.9899 and 0.0496 mole ...fractions of
p-dibromobenzene, respectively. Growth data for the pure components, the eutectic and the monotectic, determined by measuring the rate of movement of solid–liquid interface in a capillary at different undercoolings (Δ
T) suggest the applicability of Hillig–Turnbull equation,
v=
u (Δ
T)
n
, where
u and
n are constants depending on the nature of materials involved. The values of enthalpy of fusion of the pure components, the eutectic and the monotectic were determined and from these values, the enthalpy of mixing, entropy of fusion, Jackson's roughness parameter and excess thermodynamic functions were calculated. Optical microphotographs of the pure and binary materials show their characteristic features.
Cancer of the oral cavity is one of the commonest cancers in India. Use of smokeless tobacco (Pan masala, Zarda etc ) is on the increase in North India and specially in Uttar Pradesh.
To assess the ...patients characteristics and histopathological subtypes of the oral cancer in our region.
A single institutional retrospective study of 11 years from 1990 to 2000 was designed. Data was collected year wise using the tumour registry data.
A total of 40,559 biopsies were examined in the department during 1990-2000, out of which the oral cavity constituted 759 biopsies. The data was analysed with emphasis on age, sex, risk factors, site and histology.
The data was analysed utilizing the Kolomogroo-Smirnov two sample test.
A comparison of the age specific incidence rates of oral cancer during 1990-2000 in Allahabad showed that the incidence was maximum in the 50-59 years age group and squamous cell carcinoma grade I was the most prevalent type. Of the total of 759 biopsies from oral cavity, 303 malignant cases. 232 (76.57%) were males and 71 (23.43% were females with a male to female ratio of 3.27:1. The tongue was the most frequently involved site--found in 42.57% cases. On an average, 63 new cases of oral cavity per annum were detected during this period.
Properly structured site specific data like this can augment National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) and is an essential indicator for the magnitude and the pattern of the cancer problem in India Urgent public health measures like public education and oral cancer awareness are required to curb this avoidable epidemic.
Lactic acid is an important product of industrial importance. Various approaches using traditional and modern biotechnological approaches have been tried to improve the lactic acid production. The ...lactic acid bacteria, yeast and fungal systems have been engineered to enhance the lactic acid production. The advent of biotechnology and recognition of industrial applications of lactic acid led to the efforts being focused on use of biotechnological tools to engineer lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and other systems for the production of lactic acid. The initial efforts in LAB genetic modifications were concentrated mostly to develop LAB with enhanced qualities for food grade applications, using traditional approaches. The spontaneous mutations were also attempted by using insertion sequence (IS) elements. The LAB subjected to genetic improvement have been used in dairy industry for flavour enhancement, resistance to bacteriophages, addition of nutritional components and stability and structure of end products. The controlled gene expression systems for industrial gram-positive bacteria with low G
+
C content have already been reported. However, with the recognition of polylactide as a biodegradable polymer, attempts were directed to reduce the cost of lactic acid production by genetically modifying the organism, by using various cheaply available agro-industrial residues and by process modifications to remove the lactic acid produced during the course of fermentation. The authors here have tried to briefly summaries the various approaches to metabolic engineering used for improving the lactic acid production and cost reduction.
In this paper, an active phased array antenna, beam-forming network, multichannel receiver to implement distributed amplitude weighting, and signal amplification are explained. A three-stage ...distribution circular Taylor amplitude weighting is applied to achieve lower antenna sidelobes, i.e., T/R module, active RF manifold, and at digital IQ data. Distributed amplitude weighting and its effects on the overall active antenna noise figure is analyzed. This paper's proposed scheme results in significant improvement in the active antenna noise figure and enhances the radar system performance in detecting week echo signal in clutter and jamming environment.
Induction of defense response against Karnal bunt (KB)by suppressing the pathogenesis was observed upon exogenous application of jasmonic acid (JA)as evident from decrease in the coefficient of ...infection and overall response value in both susceptible and resistant varieties of wheat. The ultra-structural changes during disease progression showed the signs of programmed cell death (PCD). However, JA strengthened the defense barrier by enhancing the lignifications of cell walls as observed in spikes of both varieties by histochemical analysis. Compared to the plants inoculated with pathogen alone, plants of resistant line (RJP) first treated with JA followed by inoculation with pathogen showed more lignifications and extracellular deposition of other metabolites on cells, which is supposed to prevent mycelial invasions. Contrary to this, susceptible (SJP)lines also showed lignifications but the invasion was more compared to resistant line. Induction of protease activity was higher in resistant variety than its corresponding susceptible variety. The protease activity induced during the colonization of the pathogen and its proliferation inside the host system gets inhibited by JA treatment as demonstrated by the quantitative and in-gel protease assay. The results indicate the role of JA signalling in inhibiting the proteases due to expression of certain protease inhibitor genes. SDS-PAGE analysis shows differential gene expression through induction and/or suppression of different proteins in wheat spikes of resistant and susceptible varieties under the influence of JA. Thus, exogenously applied JA provides the conditioning effect prior to the challenge of infection and induces defense against KB probably by maintaining a critical balance between proteases and protease inhibitors and/or coordinating induction of different families of new proteins.

We present high-energy x-ray diffraction data under applied pressures up to p = 29 GPa, neutron diffraction measurements up to p = 1.1GPa, and electrical resistance measurements up to p = 5.9 GPa, on ...SrCo2As2. Here, our x-ray diffraction data demonstrate that there is a first-order transition between the tetragonal (T) and collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phases, with an onset above approximately 6 GPa at T = 7K. The pressure for the onset of the cT phase and the range of coexistence between the T and cT phases appears to be nearly temperature independent. The compressibility along the a axis is the same for the T and cT phases, whereas, along the c axis, the cT phase is significantly stiffer, which may be due to the formation of an As-As bond in the cT phase. Our resistivity measurements found no evidence of superconductivity in SrCo2As2 for p ≤ 5.9 GPa and T ≥ 1.8 K. The resistivity data also show signatures consistent with a pressure-induced phase transition for p ≳ 5.5 GPa. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements performed up to 1.1 GPa in the T phase found no evidence of stripe-type or A-type antiferromagnetic ordering down to 10 K. Spin-polarized total-energy calculations demonstrate that the cT phase is the stable phase at high pressure with a c/a ratio of 2.54. Furthermore, these calculations indicate that the cT phase of SrCo2As2 should manifest either A-type antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic order.
E896 has measured Lambda production in 11.6A GeV/c Au-Au collisions over virtually the whole rapidity phase space. The midrapidity p(t) distributions have been measured for the first time at this ...energy and appear to indicate that the Lambda hyperons have different freeze-out conditions than protons. A comparison with the relativistic quantum molecular dynamics model shows that while there is good shape agreement at high rapidity the model predicts significantly different slopes of the m(t) spectra at midrapidity. The data, where overlap occurs, are consistent with previously reported measurements.
