Like many other animals, human beings engage in behavioral defenses against infectious pathogens. The behavioral immune system consists of a suite of psychological mechanisms that (a) detect cues ...connoting the presence of infectious pathogens in the immediate environment, (b) trigger disease-relevant emotional and cognitive responses, and thus (c) facilitate behavioral avoidance of pathogen infection. However, the system responds to an overly general set of superficial cues, which can result in aversive responses to things (including people) that pose no actual threat of pathogen infection. In addition, the system is flexible, such that more strongly aversive responses occur under conditions in which perceivers are (or merely perceive themselves to be) more vulnerable to pathogen infection. Recent research reveals many provocative implications—for the experience of disgust, for extraversion and social interaction, for xenophobia and other prejudices, and for the origins of cultural differences.
The COSINE-100 dark matter search experiment is an array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors located in the Yangyang Underground Laboratory (Y2L). To understand measured backgrounds in the NaI(Tl) crystals ...we have performed Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit and developed background models for each crystal that consider contributions from both internal and external sources, including cosmogenic nuclides. The background models are based on comparisons of measurement data with Monte Carlo simulations that are guided by a campaign of material assays and are used to evaluate backgrounds and identify their sources. The average background level for the six crystals (70 kg total mass) that are studied is 3.5 counts/day/keV/kg in the (2–6) keV energy interval. Cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra have been measured with the balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment flown for 42 days in Antarctica in the 2004-2005 austral summer season. ...High-energy cosmic-ray data were collected at an average altitude of ~38.5 km with an average atmospheric overburden of ~3.9 g cm--2. Individual elements are clearly separated with a charge resolution of ~0.15 e (in charge units) and ~0.2 e for protons and helium nuclei, respectively. The measured spectra at the top of the atmosphere are represented by power laws with a spectral index of --2.66 ? 0.02 for protons from 2.5 TeV to 250 TeV and --2.58 ? 0.02 for helium nuclei from 630 GeV nucleon--1 to 63 TeV nucleon--1. They are harder than previous measurements at a few tens of GeV nucleon--1. The helium flux is higher than that expected from the extrapolation of the power law fitted to the lower-energy data. The relative abundance of protons to helium nuclei is 9.1 ? 0.5 for the range from 2.5 TeV nucleon--1 to 63 TeV nucleon--1. This ratio is considerably smaller than the previous measurements at a few tens of GeV nucleon--1.
Summary
Background
Recent studies suggest that Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin sensitization is a risk factor for asthma. However, there is a paucity of epidemiologic evidence on adult‐onset asthma ...in community‐based populations.
Objective
We sought to evaluate the epidemiology and the clinical significance of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in community‐based adult populations.
Methods
The present analyses were performed using the baseline data set of Korean adult population surveys, consisting of 1080 adults (mean age = 60.2 years) recruited from an urban and a rural community. Questionnaires, methacholine challenge tests, and allergen skin tests were performed for defining clinical phenotypes. Sera were analysed for total IgE and enterotoxin‐specific IgE using ImmunoCAP.
Results
Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization (≥ 0.35 kU/L) had a prevalence of 27.0%. Risk factors were identified as male sex, current smoking, advanced age (≥ 61 years), and inhalant allergen sensitization. Current asthma was mostly adult onset (≥ 18 years old) and showed independent associations with high enterotoxin‐specific IgE levels in multivariate logistic regression tests. In multivariate linear regressions, staphylococcal enterotoxin‐specific IgE level was identified as the major determinant factor for total IgE level.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance
Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization was independently associated with adult‐onset asthma in adult community populations. Strong correlations between the enterotoxin‐specific IgE and total IgE levels support the clinical significance. The present findings warrant further studies for the precise roles of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in the asthma pathogenesis.
Circulating selenoprotein P (SeP), fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 21 and FGF23 have been associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults but not in children. We sought to evaluate the association ...among SeP, FGF21, FGF23 and MetS in young children.
A cross-sectional study conducted during a school health examination on 210 children aged 9 years. We measured serum SeP, FGF21 and FGF23 levels, and assessed anthropometric and cardiometabolic variables. MetS was defined as the presence of ⩾3 of the following five criteria: high blood pressure, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), high triglyceride, high fasting glucose and abdominal obesity.
SeP was correlated positively with HDL-C and negatively with body mass index, waist circumference (WC), blood pressure, transaminases, triglyceride and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). FGF21 was directly correlated with WC, triglyceride and HOMA-IR, and FGF23 was inversely correlated with fasting glucose and alanine aminotransferase. Children with MetS had lower SeP and FGF23 levels and higher HOMA-IR than children without MetS. The highest tertile of SeP had decreased odds for MetS (odds ratio 0.05, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.00-0.96, P for trend=0.042), whereas FGF21 and FGF23 did not relate to the risk for MetS after controlling for confounders.
Elevated SeP concentrations are independently associated with a reduced risk of MetS in children. The associations between FGF21, FGF23 and metabolic parameters are not of comparable significance.
Crystal order is not restricted to the periodic atomic array, but can also be found in electronic systems such as the Wigner crystal or in the form of orbital order, stripe order and magnetic order. ...In the case of magnetic order, spins align parallel to each other in ferromagnets and antiparallel in antiferromagnets. In other, less conventional, cases, spins can sometimes form highly nontrivial structures called spin textures. Among them is the unusual, topologically stable skyrmion spin texture, in which the spins point in all the directions wrapping a sphere. The skyrmion configuration in a magnetic solid is anticipated to produce unconventional spin–electronic phenomena such as the topological Hall effect. The crystallization of skyrmions as driven by thermal fluctuations has recently been confirmed in a narrow region of the temperature/magnetic field (T–B) phase diagram in neutron scattering studies of the three-dimensional helical magnets MnSi (ref. 17) and Fe1−xCoxSi (ref. 22). Here we report real-space imaging of a two-dimensional skyrmion lattice in a thin film of Fe0.5Co0.5Si using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. With a magnetic field of 50–70 mT applied normal to the film, we observe skyrmions in the form of a hexagonal arrangement of swirling spin textures, with a lattice spacing of 90 nm. The related T–B phase diagram is found to be in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. In this two-dimensional case, the skyrmion crystal seems very stable and appears over a wide range of the phase diagram, including near zero temperature. Such a controlled nanometre-scale spin topology in a thin film may be useful in observing unconventional magneto-transport effects.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of static and dynamic variables for the prediction of fluid responsiveness in children under general anaesthesia.
Thirty-three ...mechanically ventilated children received 10 ml kg−1 colloid for 10 min while stable during surgery. Arterial pressure, heart rate, central venous pressure (CVP), and pleth variability index (PVI), in addition to variation in systolic pressure, pulse pressure (including Δdown and Δup), respiratory aortic blood flow velocity (ΔVpeak), and inferior vena cava diameter were measured before and after volume expansion. Patients were classified as responders to fluid loading if their stroke volume index (SVI) increased by at least 10%.
There were 15 volume responders and 18 non-responders. Of the variables examined, ΔVpeak (r=0.516, P=0.004) and PVI (r=0.49, P=0.004) before volume expansion were significantly correlated with changes in SVI. The receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that PVI and ΔVpeak predicted fluid responsiveness. Areas under the ROC curves of PVI and ΔVpeak were statistically larger than that of CVP (P=0.006 and 0.014, respectively). However, those of other variables were similar to that of CVP.
ΔVpeak and PVI can be used to predict fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated children under general anaesthesia. The other static and dynamic variables assessed in this study were not found to predict fluid responsiveness significantly in children.

Background
Sentinel node navigation surgery reduces the extent of gastric and lymph node dissection, and may improve quality of life. The benefit and harm of laparoscopic sentinel node navigation ...surgery (LSNNS) for early gastric cancer is unknown. The SENORITA (SEntinel Node ORIented Tailored Approach) trial investigated the pathological and surgical outcomes of LSNNS compared with laparoscopic standard gastrectomy (LSG) with lymph node dissection.
Methods
The SENORITA trial was an investigator‐initiated, open‐label, parallel‐assigned, non‐inferiority, multicentre RCT conducted in Korea. The primary endpoint was 3‐year disease‐free survival. The secondary endpoints, morbidity and mortality within 30 days of surgery, are reported in the present study.
Results
A total of 580 patients were randomized to LSG (292) or LSNNS (288). Surgery was undertaken in 527 patients (LSG 269, LSNNS 258). LSNNS could be performed according to the protocol in 245 of 258 patients, and a sentinel node basin was detected in 237 (96·7 per cent) Stomach‐preserving surgery was carried out in 210 of 258 patients (81·4 per cent). Postoperative complications occurred in 51 patients in the LSG group (19·0 per cent) and 40 (15·5 per cent) in the LSNNS group (P = 0·294). Complications with a Clavien–Dindo grade of III or higher occurred in 16 (5·9 per cent) and 13 (5·0 per cent) patients in the LSG and LSNNS groups respectively (P = 0·647).
Conclusion
The rate and severity of complications following LSNNS for early gastric cancer are comparable to those after LSG with lymph node dissection. Registration number: NCT01804998 (

La cirugía de navegación del ganglio centinela (sentinel node navigation surgery, SNNS) reduce la extensión de la resección gástrica y ganglionar, y puede mejorar la calidad de vida. Se desconoce el beneficio y el daño de la cirugía de navegación del ganglio centinela por vía laparoscópica (laparoscopic sentinel node navigation surgery, LSNNS) para el cáncer gástrico precoz. El ensayo clínico SENORITA investigó los resultados patológicos y quirúrgicos de LSNNS en comparación con la gastrectomía laparoscópica estándar (laparoscopic gastrectomy, LSG) con disección ganglionar (lymph node dissection, LND).
Métodos
El ensayo SENORITA fue un ensayo multicéntrico aleatorizado y controlado, iniciado por investigadores, abierto, con asignación a grupos paralelos y de no inferioridad llevado a cabo en Corea. El resultado primario fue la supervivencia libre de enfermedad a los 3 años. En el presente estudio, se describen los resultados secundarios correspondientes a morbilidad y mortalidad a los 30 días del postoperatorio.
Resultados
Un total de 580 pacientes fueron aleatorizados a LG (n = 292) o LSNNS (n = 288). La cirugía se realizó en 527 pacientes (LG 269, LSNNS 258). LSNNS pudo ser realizada de acuerdo con el protocolo en 245 de 258 pacientes y en 237 de 245 pacientes (96,7%) se detectó un ganglio centinela. La cirugía con preservación del estómago se realizó en 210 de 258 pacientes (81,4%). Las complicaciones postoperatorias se presentaron en 51 pacientes del grupo LSG (19,0%) y en 40 pacientes (15,5%) del grupo LSNNS (P = 0,294). Las complicaciones grado III o mayor de Clavien‐Dindo se detectaron en 16 (5,9%) y 13 pacientes (5,0%) de los grupos LSG y LSNNS, respectivamente (P = 0,647).
Conclusión
El porcentaje y la gravedad de las complicaciones tras LSNNS para cancer gástrico precoz son comparables a la LSG con LND.
The prospective, multicentre, randomized controlled phase III SENORITA trial evaluated the surgical and oncological outcomes of laparoscopic sentinel node navigation surgery (LSNNS) compared with laparoscopic standard gastrectomy (LSG) with lymph node dissection (LND) for early gastric cancer (EGC). LSNNS for EGC is a safe procedure in terms of postoperative morbidity and mortality compared with LSG and LND. Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) has been divided into the extrinsic type (ADe) and the intrinsic type (ADi) according to the serum IgE levels and the presence or absence of ...allergen‐specific IgE. Although previous studies have demonstrated differences in the various immunological parameters, the characteristics of AD in infancy have rarely been reported.
Objectives Our study was performed to analyse the correlations between the laboratory parameters of infantile ADe and ADi.
Methods We recruited 237 infants with AD and checked the SCORAD index, the number of peripheral blood eosinophils, the serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels, the total serum IgE levels and the specific serum IgE levels in all the patients. We also checked the serum interleukin (IL)‐4 and IL‐5 levels in 20 patients with ADe and in 20 with ADi.
Results This study showed many peculiar characteristics of infantile AD. In infancy, ADi was more prevalent than ADe. The eosinophil count, the ECP level and the SCORAD in ADi were lower than in ADe. Furthermore, a group of patients without characteristics of ADi or ADe could be identified. We tentatively classify this group as indeterminate type (ADind) and propose it as a separate entity. The clinical severity was well correlated with the eosinophil count and the serum ECP levels in ADe and ADi. Therefore these two parameters could be used as clinical severity markers in infancy. Infants are more allergic to food, and the variety of specific allergenic responses was connected with clinical severity. A higher eosinophil count, a higher ECP level and a higher detection rate of IL‐5 in the peripheral blood of infants with ADe means that eosinophils have a more prominent role in ADe than in ADi.
Conclusions Infantile AD has many distinctive features in its laboratory variables as compared with AD in other age groups. Clinicians should recognize these facts when they deal with infants with AD, and further studies are warranted on the natural course of infantile AD.
